San Antonio Spurs favored to repeat as NBA Champs
Oct. 18, 2007
Three Western Conference powerhouses are the favorites to win the 2007-08 NBA Championship, according to NBA Future Bets offered at betED.com.
The San Antonio Spurs are favorites to repeat as NBA Champions (+325), but the Phoenix Suns (+350) and Dallas Mavericks (+375) are right behind.
The revamped Boston Celtics are the top Eastern Conference team (+625). The Charlotte Bobcats and the Minnesota Timberwolves are the longest shots (+10500).

San Antonio swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, the Spurs? fourth championship in nine years. One goal they haven?t reached is to win the NBA title in consecutive seasons.
It?s no surprise they are favorites to repeat. The Spurs return 12 of their 15 players from the 2006-07 championship team, including every player that played in the 2007 NBA Playoffs. Their big three ?Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili ? are under contract until at least 2010. In addition, San Antonio convinced seven-time champion Robert Horry to play one more season, and picked up a Bruce Bowen clone in Ime Udoka from Portland.
No team knows the Spurs? strength more than the Suns, who have been knocked out of the NBA playoffs by San Antonio twice in the past three years.
Steve Nash turns 34 this season, so the window of opportunity is getting smaller for the back-to-back MVP winner and teammates Shawn Marion, Raja Bell, Leandro Barbosa, Amare Stoudemire, Boris Diaw, and Grant Hill.
The Mavericks will be seeking redemption after their stunning first-round loss to the Golden State Warriors in last season's NBA Playoffs. After finishing the regular season with a 67-15 record (tying for 6th best in NBA history), and earning the top seed in the Western Conference, the Mavs became only the third No. 1 seed in history to fall to the No. 8 seed.
The Celtics were the second-worst team in the NBA last season. They lost 18 straight games from Jan. 7 to Feb. 11 and finished with the second highest loss total in franchise history. But that incompetence gave them the No. 5 pick and they used it to acquire Ray Allen from the Seattle Supersonics on Draft Night, and then pulled off the deal of the year, acquiring Kevin Garnett from the Timberwolves for five players and two picks.
