Things I should see and do in San Francisco.

I'm flying out, spending 2 days there sightseeing, and then driving home all the way back on Route 80. Planning to do all of this in 6 days. There are about 10 stops along route 80 that I'm going to see. I'm planning on walking across the GGB, touring Alcatraz, going to the Exploratorium, and riding a trolley. I don't really drink or party so what else should I see in my two days while I'm there?

for two days you have filled your time schedule up

hope you got someone to share the driving with ya.

thats a long way.

One time I was going to NY and I wanted to make good time. So the way I did it I ignored sleep.

I had all the windows down and radio was on. Woke up in a start headed into a Semi who was almost off the road avoiding my dumb ass. Got off on next exit and slept in a motel 6.

No I doing this on my own. The places I'm stopping on my way home are spread out enough that I can drive safely and then take a break and then drive again til I stop to sleep. Repeat for 4 more days- if it takes that long....I have a lead foot hahaha

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
Trolley car, I assume you mean cable car. Those locals will correct you!...what you do here is ride one after dark, when almost no one else onboard. Tell the operator to go easy on the brake downhill and it's a fun thrill ride! They actually like to do this for tourists...

Walking Lombard Street
A walk on Lombard Street gives more time to take in everything without worrying about accidental scrapes, discombobulated pedestrians, and barf bags. To get there, just zoom in on any map and look for the squiggly section between Hyde (top of the hill) and Leavenworth.

Tackling Lombard uphill is also a good way to burn off excess calories consumed at Ghirardelli Chocolate, Boudin's Sourdough Bread and even the cream in that Irish Coffee at Buena Vista Cafe.

On the way up, if you need to catch your breath or rest those aching legs but don't want to admit it, picture-taking is a perfect excuse to stop every few steps.

If you fear that such a steep climb might invoke an emergency room visit, take the Powell-Hyde cable car line (from Ghirardelli Square or Union Square) get off at Lombard Street and walk downhill. Or call a ride-sharing service and have them drop you off.

To get an idea of what Lombard would be like without the curves, the next block over on Filbert between Hyde and Leavenworth is one of the ten steepest streets in the US.

Photographing Lombard Street
Even though there are already more than 1,376,235 photos of this tourist spot posted online, you'll no doubt want one of your own.

The best place for your photo is from Leavenworth, looking up the street while avoiding getting someone else's uphill-bound backside in your frame. A few shots of the gorgeous views are a good idea, too.

After you Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Tweet, text and tout your location to friends, acquaintances ? and the total strangers you met at breakfast ? put that mobile device in your pocket and enjoy the moment.

Primary Needs
If you've gotta "go," the nearest public restrooms are blocks away. Even though some cheeky tourists try, it's best not to knock on someone's door and ask to use their facilities. After all, you don't want to be part of tomorrow's headline about the rude visitor who sent that homeowner over the edge...

My "No Stars" Review
I stopped giving star ratings to California attractions after I tripped over a deleted star and sprained my ankle, so here's a verbal assessment instead:

This "crookedest street" is on many lists of top San Francisco attractions, including mine. It's free to visit and at less-busy times, it doesn't take very long. Most people love it and so do my friends, sitting in the back seat of my little car, giggling in delight, and shouting "Hooray!" as we drive downhill.

On the downside, during busy times, the wait for the short ride down can feel longer than a round trip to the moon.

If you think you've gotta see it, or you won't be able to face the folks back home who told you to go, you should. If you're in the area, it's worth a stop. Will you miss an essential San Francisco experience if you don't go? Probably not.

What do other people think? When we polled more than 1,600 readers, 62% say Lombard Street is great or awesome.

San Francisco's Real Crookedest Street
If you want to find the real most crooked street in San Francisco, try Vermont Avenue at 20th Street.

I haven't lived nearby since 67' but once you have rode or walked down Lombard Street or some others it stays with ya .

safe travels..........Eyes wide open ..

Yes Lombard Street was on my list too. The Pier too.

How does Uber or Lyft work? I'm not picking up my rental car until I leave so for those 2 days I will be on foot or public trans.

The San Francisco cable cars run on three routes. Use this guide to find out where they go, what they pass and how to make the most of the ride.

Was there for 4 weeks in June...

Here you go.

Buy Alcatraz night tickets now or else you will pay double on stubhub.
SF Giants game is so worth it!
Walt Disney museum most people don't talk about
Golden Gate bridge
Must go to Sausalito across the GGB
Haight-Ashbury
Mission Dolores Park

It's an early city as most things close at 9-10pm even on weekends.
Please stay far away from the Tenderloin district.
The homeless population is absolutely disturbing and at times overwhelming. Be very aware.
Also sad to say but I watched people smoking crack and shooting up in plain view and my hotel (Marriott courtyard was 2 blocks from Union Square. Be prepared to smell weed everywhere you go as it's legal which I didn't mind. Ask away I know where to go and where not to.

Must Eats:
Mama's at washington park for breakfast/brunch - best in the city people line up.
Golden Boy Pizza in North Beach - best too people line up.
Humphry Slocombe ice cream @ Ferry building 1 - OMG - Secret Breakfast voted top 5 in the USA
Crabsters - The very best crab/lobster in the city across from the tourist row - walk in joint.
Beard Papa Sweets - To die for
Crab house @ Pier 39

I think Chinatown in SF is a must. Remember to always offer less than posted price.

Take a jacket for your Golden Gate bridge walk.

Cable car ride for sure.

Lombard Street for sure.

Alcatraz isn?t that special I don?t think, and if u don?t already have tickets, good luck.

If you drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, you?re very close to Muir Woods which is well worth the drive.

Somewhere in Corn Country
You into books?
If so a visit to city lights bookstore in North Beach is a must.
Second Golden Boy pizza in North Beach. You also can?t go wrong just wandering into almost any Italian place in north beach for a meal.
And T is correct; the homeless population is huge and overwhelming and at times scary and disturbing.
Used to be somewhat contained in the Tenderloin district but now you?ll find the homeless everywhere in the city and many of them suffer from severe mental illness leading to frightening behaviors. Always be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine but be prepared to be shocked at times as well.
San Francisco is one of my favorite American cities but you do need to know what you?re in for before arriving.
