I did it many times, many hotels. Put the bill between your license and cc and ask for a complimentary upgrade. I would say I have been turned down twice out of many stays. But usually get a nice upgrade for 20 bucks.
Best one I got was during our Wedding Anniversary at the Palazzo, slipped the clerk $50 and he said he would have to speak to the manager.
I thought oh man, now I'm screwed as they usually do it automatically. Manager came out and told me congratulations on the anniversary and put us in a corner Siena suite. Man it was nice. Again not the top room, but better than our basic room we had reserved.
So try it, worst case they say no none available. Then take the 20 and throw it in the slots!!
