The Edmonton Oilers may again be without the services of Ryan Smyth, less than one week after the star forward returned to the line-up.

Smyth has been listed as day-to-day following Thursday night?s 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. He didn?t practice with the team Friday and was seen leaving the arena five minutes before teammates took to the ice.

Smyth underwent X-rays Friday morning and Dr. David Reid was pleased with the results, stating that nothing was wrong, structurally, with the ankle. Dr. Reid said that all indications point to soreness in his ligaments and tendentious, stating that the ankle is just not strong enough for the rigors of the NHL.

Smyth?s status for Saturday?s game against the Avalanche is questionable.

Jocelyn Thibault will likely get the start in goal even though Steve Passmore picked up the win on Thursday. Thibault leads the NHL in wins (24) and is 12-3 in his last 15 decisions.

Steve Dubinsky who scored the game-winner the last time these two teams met, may be watching the game from the press box as Kyle Calder expected to return to the lineup. (NOTE: from site, other chi papers say he played well enough to stay in lineup...daily herald--"Perhaps having Dubinsky around, plus the return this weekend of winger Aaron Downey from Norfolk, will produce more competition and force Korolev, Bell, White, Probert and Vandenbussche to be better or risk sitting out.

Dubinsky certainly played well enough on Thursday (15:49 of ice time, 1 goal, 3 hits, 3 blocked shots) to be in the lineup against tonight against the Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena even with Calder expected back."

"That's going to be up to Dubie," said Sutter. "Let's put it this way: At the beginning of training camp, he was outstanding. At the end of training camp, he wasn't. Everything is an opportunity. He's got an opportunity and if he's smart, he'll make sure he takes it on a game-to-game basis."

Defenseman Alexander Karpovtsev was shaken up in the second period of Thursday's game and is listed as doubtful. If he is unable to go, Vladimir Chebaturkin will take his place.

Brian Sutter only watched practice Friday, leaving the on-ice direction to assistants Denis Savard, Al MacAdam and Vladislav Tretiak. Of the healthy players, Tony Amonte, Alex Zhamnov, Steve Sullivan, Phil Housley, Alexander Karpovtsev, Jon Klemm and Eric Daze sat out.

*Aaron Downey, who has been on a two-week conditioning assignment with Norfolk of the American Hockey League, is expected back for tonight's game.

*The Hawks' win Thursday kept the team unbeaten (8-0-2) in the first home game after a road trip.(interesting!)

Blue Jackets rookie enforcer Jody Shelley had a trio of busy fights against legendary pugilist Bob Probert in the United Center. At the very least, Shelley went 1-1-1. He came away thrilled with the experience.
"I was surprised he went the first time,'' Shelley said. "I asked -- I didn't think he'd go -- and he said, 'Sure.' It wasn't much of a fight. It looked like I bailed on him, and I wasn't too happy with that. The second one, I bonked him on the boards and he kind of looked at me. I thought, 'Maybe he wants to go again.' So, he did.

"It was kind of an agreement. That was a pretty good fight. The last one he switched wings and came over to me and wanted to go again. I couldn't turn him down.''

Robert Schnabel, a 6-foot-5, 232-pound defenseman who was recalled from Milwaukee of the American Hockey League on Wednesday, will make his NHL debut tonight for Nash.

There's no place like Gaylord Entertainment Center for the Predators, who are 9-1-5 in their past 15 home games. Nashville has scored 20 more goals than it had at this point last season. The Predators are 3-7-1-2 all-time against the Ducks.

Scott Walker, Nashville's leading goal scorer last season, met with team neurosurgeon Dr. Carl Hampf on Friday after he experienced recurring symptoms of the mystifying condition for the third time in two months. With primary concern for his long-term health, team officials said that the 28-year-old forward will be out indefinitely - possibly for the remainder of the season.

The Predators will play the Mighty Ducks three times within a two week period.
- Starting with Saturday's game against Anaheim, the Predators will play four games in six days including a trip to the West Coast for back-to-back games against Anaheim and Los Angeles.
