For today.....
DETROIT +3 over Pittsburgh (1 UNIT)
DETROIT / Pittsburgh UNDER 35? (1 UNIT)
The Steelers first two losses can be blamed on a running game that has been slow to develop and the new third-down defensive alignment that still hasn't reached maturity. We mostly expect them to work on the running game today, as they are loaded at WR. Cowher had a hard time evaluating players last week in that wild Redskin game, and will keep things conservative here as roster trimmings start Monday.
The Steelers were unable to rally against the Jets or hold off the Redskins, because of a lack of quality backups. With 20 of the 22 starting positions already settled going into the draft, quality un-drafted rookies were reluctant to sign with Pittsburgh. Some of those players will get cut next week, but they are grossly out-manned late in preseaseon games, as showed vs. the second half of the Redskin game. The Redskins threw 5 TD?s in less than 26 minutes. Three of those were by Sage Rosenfels, who was traded to the Miami Dolphins for a seventh-round draft choice. Both Lion QB?s are better than Rosenfels.
Also, The Steeler first string defensive alignment loses one of its key elements as the rush end in the dime, with Kendrell Bell out with a high ankle sprain. The Steelers? coaches were rattled after experiencing so many injuries to top players last week, something they have not endured in the recent past. When asked what he would be looking for in the game today, Steelers DC Tim Lewis said, "too keep everyone healthy." The Steelers can't afford another grave injury such as the one suffered by Bell. That's why QB Kordell Stewart, who didn't miss a lot of practice time this week, won't play.
He?ll give way to Tommy Maddox, then Charlie Batch.
The Lion QB battle is close, as both Joey Harrington and Mike McMahon played well in the Lions' 1 point loss to the Browns. McMahon is scheduled to play the first 2 1/2 quarters. HC Marty Mornhinweg may send his starting offensive and defensive units out after half-time for a series or two, but he'll let the game situations dictate that decision. Cowher will not do that. Whenever McMahon departs, rookie first-round pick Joey Harrington will take over and play the rest of the game.
This is the big coming -out party for Ford Field. A stadium cannot produce victories, but Mornhinweg believes the attitude behind it can. Mornhinweg believes his players will be walking on air by game time. With a sold-out stadium and excited fans filling the seats, Mornhinweg believes the juices will be flowing. The Lions are also 0-2 and trying desperately to piece back together a team that was the butt of jokes last year. We expect a conservative game here.
