Tommy Robredo +170 over James Blake 1 unit to win 1.7
Robredo's recent form is nothing special but this could be very good matchup for him. This year Blake has lot of problems in his game. He made so many unforced errors against Rochus and put less than 50% of his first serves in. If your book offers I would also play OVER games as both men have allowed a great number of break chances to their opponents. I am playing this one small as it is a night match and Blake, as much as anybody else, feeds off the energy from the crowd at night. Think back to that unbelievable five-setter he played against Santoro in '07 in NYC.
Robin Soderling -170 over Sam Querry 5.1 units to win 3.0
It has certainly been the "Summer of Sam" in '09 as he has had very positive results on the hard court series, winning the US Open Series. Always a fan favorite in NYC, Querry played a fantastic match against Rafa last year in the round of 16, earning himself a few new supporters in the process. It is funny to me how American players can lose, yet still gain more fans. In a country obsessed with being the best, we sure have a soft spot for loveable losers.
Soderling was given a free pass into this round as his opponent retired after just two games. He has a more complete game than Querry, who like most of the Americans (Roddick, Odesnik, Blake, etc) are one-trick ponies. In Sam's case it is his booming serve. He doesn't do anything to take advantage of opponent's weaknesses and his tactics are weak at best. His serve keeps him in many a match, and can be difficult to break when it is going well, but when it breaks down or he is forced to rally, Robin has a big edge.
I think the price is nice for Soderling, as Querry has had a great summer and will certainly be enjoying home-crowd support, but in the end the Swede should advance.
