(8) NEW YORK ISLANDERS (0-1) AT (1) TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING (1-0), 3 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning try to grab a two games to none lead today when they host the New York Islanders in Game 2 of their conference quarterfinal set at the St. Pete Times Forum.

The Bolts had many doubters entering Thursday's series opener, and they responded with a 3-0 victory. It was by no means a perfect showing, but any problems were offset by a 30-save performance from goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin.

"Nik was outstanding," Lightning coach John Tortorella said. "That's good for Nik to play a game like that and get a win. It was tremendous for him. That was one of his better games."

Fredrik Modin tallied a pair of goals for Tampa, and bruiser Andre Roy broke the ice with a breakaway goal in the second period.

The performance of the Tampa Bay defense and Khabibulin allowed the Lightning's high-powered offense to get away with one, as the club's top guns, with the exception of Modin, were relatively held in check. The top two lines were limited to a mere nine shots, and three came from center Vincent Lecavalier.

"We didn't generate as much offense as we'd like, but we scored some goals when we needed to," Tortorella said. "In the playoffs, you don't overanalyze."

The one x-factor the Islanders had in their corner was young netminder Rick DiPietro, a kid getting his first taste of playoff action as a starter. DiPietro, who shined down the stretch run, finished with just 15 saves on the night. In fairness to him, though, two of the three Lightning goals directly came as a result of turnovers by New York's Eric Cairns.

Islanders coach Steve Stirling was asked whether or not he would consider a lineup change for Cairns after his two mistakes.

"We told him, 'We're going to stick with you. Make mistakes. I'm coming back with you,'" Stirling said. "And we've done that and will continue to do that because it's the right way to go."

As New York goes back to the drawing board, it might also want to take a look at its power play. The Isles went 0-for-5 with the man advantage, including three blown chances in the first period. They managed only one shot during that early trio of opportunities.

The Isles could receive a spark in their rebound attempt, as feisty forward Jason Blake may return after missing six games with an ankle sprain. He will be a game-time decision.

Game 3 will be played Monday night on Long Island.

STREAKS: Since winning its last playoff series in 1993, New York
is 1-12 in its last 13 postseason road games; Tampa Bay
recorded the first postseason shutout in team history.

HISTORY: Tampa Bay had dropped three straight to the Islanders
before Thursday.

(8) NASHVILLE PREDATORS (0-1) AT (1) DETROIT RED WINGS (1-0), 3 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings, who received a scare early in the series opener, try to leave home with a two games to none lead today when they host the Nashville Predators in Game 2 of their conference quarterfinal set.

Detroit, trying to atone for last year's playoff disaster against Anaheim, fell behind early when Nashville's Adam Hall scored 16 seconds into the first match.

But the Predators failed to build upon that early lead, leaving an opening for the Red Wings for the next 40 minutes of action. And that small crack was all Detroit needed, as Dave Lewis' club slowly began looking like the team that led the NHL with 109 points.

That slow evolvement finally paid off with three third-period goals and a 3-1 victory. Kris Draper, Tomas Holmstrom and deadline acquisition Robert Lang provided the tallies, while goaltender Manny Legace, getting his first playoff start, stopped the final 21 shots he faced after allowing Hall's goal.

Lewis credited Legace, who received the start over Curtis Joseph, with keeping the Wings in the match under heavy Nashville pressure. Legace even stoned Steve Sullivan on a penalty shot early in the first.

"Manny Legace was outstanding in the first period; I thought our team was porous," Lewis said. "At the beginning, we were trying to do too much."

But while Legace stymied the Predators, who are in the playoffs for the first time in their six-year history, the Red Wings had their own problems with All- Star Nashville netminder Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun halted 18 shots in the first two frames combined.

But Draper, a hero for the Wings all season, opened the floodgates with a goal just 37 seconds into the third. The "Grind Line" member took a pass from Kirk Maltby, split the Preds' defense and beat Vokoun five-hole.

Detroit added two more in the third, as Lang helped set up Holmstrom's deflection tally before adding a highlight reel marker of his own to seal things.

Nashville coach Barry Trotz, while primarily sticking with what got him here, is planning on tweaking his approach a bit heading into Game 2.

"We're going to change a few things around on them and hopefully it'll be enough to keep them on their toes a little bit," Trotz said. "They can beat you in so many ways. But we're going to stay with our game plan and do the things we do."

Trotz will be without defenseman Marek Zidlicky, who suffered an "upper body injury" after a hit from the Wings' Kirk Maltby in the first period. Zidlicky is not expected to play today, which could hamper the Preds' power play. He contributed 14 goals in the regular season, nine of which came on the man advantage.

Game 3 will be played Sunday afternoon in Nashville.

STREAKS: Nashville is 2-12-2-2 all time at Joe Louis Arena.

HISTORY: Detroit won a playoff game not coached by Scotty Bowman
for the first time since 1993 when Bryan Murray was coaching.

(7) ST. LOUIS BLUES (0-1) AT (2) SAN JOSE SHARKS (1-0), 3 p.m.

(Sports Network) - After a dramatic overtime win in the series opener, the San Jose Sharks seek a two games to none lead today when they host the St. Louis Blues in Game 2 of their conference quarterfinal set at HP Pavilion.

On Thursday, rookie Niko Dimitrakos scored 9:16 into overtime to lift the Sharks to a 1-0 decision. He picked up a loose puck near the right boards and stickhandled toward the net before firing a wrist shot beyond the stick side of Blues goalie Chris Osgood. The tally gave Dimitrakos a goal in his first- ever playoff game.

Dimitrakos played just 16 shifts during the night, good for a little over 10 minutes of ice time. During the regular season he tallied nine goals with 15 assists in 68 games.

"I couldn't have dreamed this up any better," Dimitrakos said. "A chance to play in a playoff game first of all. Then to get a few shifts in overtime as a rookie. Then to put the puck in, it's unbelievable."

The Sharks had dropped their previous five playoff overtime games, including four straight at home. Their last OT victory in the postseason came in 1998 -- Game 4 of the first round against Dallas.

San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov made 26 saves to backstop San Jose to victory. He notched his second career playoff shutout, both coming against the Blues.

Osgood, the only starting goaltender in the Western Conference to have backed a team to the Stanley Cup before, stopped 28 shots for the seventh-seeded Blues. He made three saves in the overtime until Dimitrakos' wrister reached the top corner of the net.

"He actually made a real nice play,"Osgood said of the winning goal. "Sometimes you say, 'Oh, we could have done something different,' but I don't see how we really could have."

As the Blues, who are 3-22 lifetime in series when they lost the opener, enter Game 2, their one concern is the Sharks' dangerous speed. San Jose especially utilized this strength early in the match and outshot St. Louis 11-6 in the first period.

"That just shows you the speed they have," Blues coach Mike Kitchen said. "They are a good skating team, young and energetic. Add those elements and it's clear what their strength is."

Game 3 will be played Monday night in St. Louis.

STREAKS: San Jose has won three in a row vs. St. Louis.

HISTORY: San Jose has not won the opening two games of a series
since the 1995 Western Conference quarterfinals vs. Calgary;
St. Louis never has won a series when losing the first two
games.

(5) OTTAWA SENATORS (1-0) AT (4) TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS (0-1), 7 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Toronto Maple Leafs try to leave home with a split tonight when they host the Ottawa Senators in Game 2 of their conference quarterfinal set at Air Canada Centre.

Toronto was the only home team to lose its playoff opener, falling 4-2 in Game 1 on Thursday. Marian Hossa scored twice to lead Ottawa back from a one-goal deficit.

Bryan Smolinski and Wade Redden also tallied for the fifth-seeded Senators, who overcame a 2-1 deficit with three unanswered goals. Redden's goal tied the game midway through the second period, and Hossa gave Ottawa a 3-2 lead just 38 seconds later.

Patrick Lalime, who returned from a knee injury, started off shaky in net for the Senators, allowing two goals on just four Toronto shots in the first period. But he settled down to make 15 saves for the win.

"We came out strong and we really wanted to win this first game," said Hossa. "We talked a lot about making sure we got the job done, but we know this is going to be a long series."

Ottawa took advantage of some undisciplined play on the part of Toronto, and the Senators were given eight power plays -- six in the last two periods. They cashed in on two of them.

"We were in the penalty box all night," McCabe said. "You can't create offense when you're killing penalties."

Joe Nieuwendyk and McCabe scored first period goals for the fourth- seeded Maple Leafs, while Ed Belfour stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced in the loss.

Toronto could receive some reinforcements tonight, as defenseman Ken Klee (shoulder) and winger Darcy Tucker (abdominal) could be back on game ice.

"There'll be possible changes," head coach Pat Quinn said Friday. "I think [Klee and Tucker] are fairly close. They've been working hard and I think they're a little closer to it. We just want to make sure they don't hurt themselves that's all."

Game 3 will be played Monday at the Corel Centre in Ottawa.

STREAKS: Toronto has not dropped the first two games of a
playoff series since the 1993 Western Conference quarterfinals
vs. Detroit; Ottawa is trying to win the first two games of a
series for the first time.

HISTORY: Despite dropping the series opener, Toronto is 7-3-0
vs. Ottawa at home in the playoffs.

(6) NEW JERSEY DEVILS (0-1) AT (3) PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (1-0), 7:30 p.m. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers try to put their nemesis in an 0-2 hole tonight when they host the New Jersey Devils in Game 2 of their conference quarterfinal set at the Wachovia Center.

Philadelphia posted a 3-2 victory in Thursday's series opener, as goaltender Robert Esche finished with 37 saves in his playoff debut. Esche's performance was crucial, as he had suffered through some shaky times down the stretch run.

Although he knew all along who his starter would be, Hitchcock did not announce until Monday that Esche would receive the nod over veteran Sean Burke.

"He's here, he's now, he has a game under his belt, and he should feel good about himself," Hitchcock said of Esche. "He is showing people that he can play goal in the playoffs and we will just move on from there."

Keith Primeau posted a goal and an assist, while Simon Gagne and Jeremy Roenick added tallies for the Flyers. Philadelphia took a 3-0 lead before a 35-second Devils flurry in the third period made a game of it.

The Devils' Jan Hrdina and Patrik Elias scored to draw the defending champions within 3-2, but Esche held strong for the remainder of the final frame.

"It is so furious, the speed and the game, it is so different than the [first round] Toronto series was last year.," said Hitchcock. "All we did was fall asleep for 35 seconds and it was in our net."

Martin Brodeur finished with 23 stops for the Devs.

As for New Jersey, they had some positives to speak of. The Devils outshot Philadelphia 39-26 in the game and won 58 percent of the faceoffs. Scott Gomez particularly shined on draws, defeating Primeau 14 of the 18 times they tangled.

During last spring's run to the Stanley Cup, the Devils only fell behind one game to none in just one series -- the Eastern Conference finals against Ottawa. That was the only 2003 series that saw them start on the road, and they came back to win in seven games.

Game 3 will be played Monday at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.

STREAKS: Philadelphia has won the last four games vs. New
Jersey.

HISTORY: New Jersey has not dropped the first two games of a
series since the 1994 Eastern Conference semifinals vs.
Boston; Philadelphia has not won the first two games of a
series since the 2000 Eastern Conference quarterfinals vs.
Buffalo.

how was your season with Roman ?

Ouch, that was below the belt:thefinger . Basically exactly what you guys saw in Philly......Very unorthodox, periods of brilliance, highly erratic. But the Kings D need to play much better, many times he was hung out to dry by the young D.

Congrats on the win by the Flybiatches. I have them to win the series, also.

BTW, I lost your email for some reason, sorry. Please do get my email from Jack. Would love to chat. Plus don't you still owe me a Flypussy hat?? J/K. I think I forfeited my right to the hat months ago, LOL
