(8) NEW YORK ISLANDERS (0-1) AT (1) TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING (1-0), 3 p.m.
(Sports Network) - The top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning try to grab a two games to none lead today when they host the New York Islanders in Game 2 of their conference quarterfinal set at the St. Pete Times Forum.
The Bolts had many doubters entering Thursday's series opener, and they responded with a 3-0 victory. It was by no means a perfect showing, but any problems were offset by a 30-save performance from goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin.
"Nik was outstanding," Lightning coach John Tortorella said. "That's good for Nik to play a game like that and get a win. It was tremendous for him. That was one of his better games."
Fredrik Modin tallied a pair of goals for Tampa, and bruiser Andre Roy broke the ice with a breakaway goal in the second period.
The performance of the Tampa Bay defense and Khabibulin allowed the Lightning's high-powered offense to get away with one, as the club's top guns, with the exception of Modin, were relatively held in check. The top two lines were limited to a mere nine shots, and three came from center Vincent Lecavalier.
"We didn't generate as much offense as we'd like, but we scored some goals when we needed to," Tortorella said. "In the playoffs, you don't overanalyze."
The one x-factor the Islanders had in their corner was young netminder Rick DiPietro, a kid getting his first taste of playoff action as a starter. DiPietro, who shined down the stretch run, finished with just 15 saves on the night. In fairness to him, though, two of the three Lightning goals directly came as a result of turnovers by New York's Eric Cairns.
Islanders coach Steve Stirling was asked whether or not he would consider a lineup change for Cairns after his two mistakes.
"We told him, 'We're going to stick with you. Make mistakes. I'm coming back with you,'" Stirling said. "And we've done that and will continue to do that because it's the right way to go."
As New York goes back to the drawing board, it might also want to take a look at its power play. The Isles went 0-for-5 with the man advantage, including three blown chances in the first period. They managed only one shot during that early trio of opportunities.
The Isles could receive a spark in their rebound attempt, as feisty forward Jason Blake may return after missing six games with an ankle sprain. He will be a game-time decision.
Game 3 will be played Monday night on Long Island.
STREAKS: Since winning its last playoff series in 1993, New York
is 1-12 in its last 13 postseason road games; Tampa Bay
recorded the first postseason shutout in team history.

(8) NASHVILLE PREDATORS (0-1) AT (1) DETROIT RED WINGS (1-0), 3 p.m.
(Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings, who received a scare early in the series opener, try to leave home with a two games to none lead today when they host the Nashville Predators in Game 2 of their conference quarterfinal set.
Detroit, trying to atone for last year's playoff disaster against Anaheim, fell behind early when Nashville's Adam Hall scored 16 seconds into the first match.
But the Predators failed to build upon that early lead, leaving an opening for the Red Wings for the next 40 minutes of action. And that small crack was all Detroit needed, as Dave Lewis' club slowly began looking like the team that led the NHL with 109 points.
That slow evolvement finally paid off with three third-period goals and a 3-1 victory. Kris Draper, Tomas Holmstrom and deadline acquisition Robert Lang provided the tallies, while goaltender Manny Legace, getting his first playoff start, stopped the final 21 shots he faced after allowing Hall's goal.
Lewis credited Legace, who received the start over Curtis Joseph, with keeping the Wings in the match under heavy Nashville pressure. Legace even stoned Steve Sullivan on a penalty shot early in the first.
"Manny Legace was outstanding in the first period; I thought our team was porous," Lewis said. "At the beginning, we were trying to do too much."
But while Legace stymied the Predators, who are in the playoffs for the first time in their six-year history, the Red Wings had their own problems with All- Star Nashville netminder Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun halted 18 shots in the first two frames combined.
But Draper, a hero for the Wings all season, opened the floodgates with a goal just 37 seconds into the third. The "Grind Line" member took a pass from Kirk Maltby, split the Preds' defense and beat Vokoun five-hole.
Detroit added two more in the third, as Lang helped set up Holmstrom's deflection tally before adding a highlight reel marker of his own to seal things.
Nashville coach Barry Trotz, while primarily sticking with what got him here, is planning on tweaking his approach a bit heading into Game 2.
"We're going to change a few things around on them and hopefully it'll be enough to keep them on their toes a little bit," Trotz said. "They can beat you in so many ways. But we're going to stay with our game plan and do the things we do."
Trotz will be without defenseman Marek Zidlicky, who suffered an "upper body injury" after a hit from the Wings' Kirk Maltby in the first period. Zidlicky is not expected to play today, which could hamper the Preds' power play. He contributed 14 goals in the regular season, nine of which came on the man advantage.
Game 3 will be played Sunday afternoon in Nashville.
STREAKS: Nashville is 2-12-2-2 all time at Joe Louis Arena.
HISTORY: Detroit won a playoff game not coached by Scotty Bowman
for the first time since 1993 when Bryan Murray was coaching.
