I like Houston over 81.5 wins. Wagner appears to be ok coming off elbow surgery, but they also picked up Mike Jackson as insurance. Also Biggio missed a couple of months last year but reports are that he looks good. Lima pitched better in winter ball and shouldn't embarrass himself again. They have a deep pitching staff with Elerton, Lima, Reynolds, Bottenfield, Wade Miller, and Dotel. Also potent lineup with Biggio, Spiers, Bagwell, Alou, Hidalgo, Berkman, and Ausmus. After the AS break last year, they were 9 games over .500 and should challenge for the NL Central crown this year.

Just curious why you like the Indians under?? I wrote up a pretty extensive post on why I feel they will go over the 89...and I would love to hear your opposite viewpoint. Thanks in advance..

I'm going with the BoSox under 89.5.

Doctor says Garciaparra should have surgery
Associated Press
Monday, March 26, 2001

Fort Myers, Florida - A doctor who examined Nomar Garciaparra today is recommending that the Boston Red Sox shortstop undergo surgery on his injured wrist.

Frank McCue of the University of Virginia says Garciaparra should probably have the tendon repaired now rather than continue playing with pain.

McCue says if surgery is performed, Garciaparra would need about six weeks for recovery. If he were to continue to play, the noted hand specialist says Garciaparra would be in considerable pain and would need daily cortisone shots. He would also run a slight risk of rupturing the tendon.

The two-time American League batting champion originally suffered the injury when hit by a pitch in September of 1999.

I think the cleveland indians and the texas rangers are pretty much the same team. both have potent offenses top to bottom. the weakness is the pitching staff.

starters
1.colon (overpowering pitcher with great "stuff", hopefully he stays healthy)
2.finley (38 y/o, on downhill slide of career, see him as a 14 game winner.)
3.nagy (good #3, when healthy. already shut down in the spring, going on the dl to start the season.
4.wright (going on dl already also. compare him to rick ankiel, great stuff, with emotional problems. will never live to expectations of a few years ago.
5.burba (probably the most consistent pitcher on the team, when that happens i think you have problems.
6.bullpen (one of the better ones in the league)
7.lose manny and alomar, pickup gonzalez (can't stay healthy, to me thats a major loss)
8. see this team as an 85 to 87 game winner this year. i dont have much on this play, its just an opinion play.

just a few thoughts on the future props i have seen: being a diehard philly fan (oh the Pain), i just don't see these guys winning over 70 games. yes i do think they have the offensive capability to score runs, and considering glanville and rolen had off years last year, they will and can score runs. BUT, there pitching just plain blows. and considering omar daal, the 20 game loser from last year is leading the phils this spring. how does that reflect on the other 4 starters. from what i've seen and read the future looks bleak. throw in an extended stint in the nl east this year, and having to play the braves, mets and florida, not to mention the feisty(not jim)expos, twice as often, and not to mention a quick run thru the al east, brother it's gone to a long season. and on another tangent , god i love the under 89 games on the red sox for the season. in that division, i just don't see it happening. any thoughts, both for or against are welcome.
see you at the bar!
