It's been 50 years since one of the GREATEST performances in the history of sports happened @ Belmont Park. With so many astonishing records Big Red established that day it's hard to listed them all here. The most impressive in my option was his 2:24 flat time running the One and A-Half Mile @ Big Sandy which was over 2 seconds faster than the previous record set by Gallant Man in 1957(2.26.60). To put that in perspective, Secretariat would have beaten Gallant Man by 21 lengths. WOW!!! The fact that Secretariat ran each Quarter Mile faster than the previous one is also mind blowing. His fastest Quarter was his last, from 1.25 miles to the Finish Line. Amazingly, Jockey Ronnie Turcotte said Big Red was not even tired & that he still had more horse. Are you kidding?!!? His Beyer Figure was 139, the highest ever given. No matter how many times I watch the replay I still get emotional when Chic Anderson states..."Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a tremendous machine!!!" That was probably the greatest call in horse racing as well.

I can state with confidence that Secretariat was & will always be the greatest race horse ever!!! :yup

BTW-Betting on the #2 & #6 in today's Race.

Debated as to which Forum to post this. Figured more eyes would be in the General Forum. Will not post again until 5:07amCST.

Jennifer Love Hewitt as reviewed your case, and despite your internal debate, the ban remains.

I was there 50 years ago at Belmont and watched Secretariat destroy the field . I bought 3 programs and had 6 or 7 winning tickets It paid $2.10 on a $2,00 bet I kept every thing up in my attic and finally when I moved from NY to Texas I found the tickets and programs. But all the losing tickets from the 1st 8 or 9 races. The programs had my handwriting on them with all my handicapping lines. I found about 20 losing tickets but not the winning ones I had read in an article in Sporting News that some people had winning tickets to the Derby and Preakness and were buying them for the Belmont . So I bought them knowing they would be more worthwhile as a souvenir,
So when we sold my house in NY and the Phantom of the Opera singer bought my house we packed everything in an IPOD and sent it to Austin Texas. Thats when I found the programs and losing tickets . I know I didn't throw them out but as I sit here in my upstairs office typing this post those tickets are here. I have searched to no avail . But there here somewhere.
My room here in Austin has boxes and boxes of my whole life . I have many auto graphed baseballs, baseball cards trophies sports etc I can't believe its been 50 years . But my best friend was driving and convinced me to go to Long Island on my birthday [ June 10th} and see Secretariat win the Belmont. It was so crowded and when they paraded the 8 horses Secretariat was so muscular and so red, I remember Sham was a black horse The race was a blowout, Secretariat won by so many lengths. My wife corrected me and said June 10 th 1971 wasn't your birthday it was the day before . I asked her had I met you yet. She said yes we just starting dating. I then asked her " do you know where my winning tickets are" ? Her answer was after ducking something she threw at me was " Yes up in that room of yours thats still unpacked " So its near me as I type this and since its 50 Years maybe I will look again . Yesterday at Goodwill here in Texas I found and bought a small wooden plaque for $2.45 It said " "its weird being the same age as old people" I am either 71 or 72 today I asked my wife which one and she looked at me sarcastically I think I'm 72 born in '51 and although I cannot find those tickets and where I parked my car at the costgo yesterday if I get more then 10 views on this post I'm happy I have Forte today at the Belmont Good luck to everyone
Will update this post if I can find those damn tickets ..

Thank you for the post. I just finished reading article on him last week. The most amazing "athlete" of all times. Aside from belmont , Secretariat still holds the record for the fastest Derby ever run: 1:59 2/5 seconds. He still holds the record for the fastest Preakness run: 1:53 flat.

Since you been here I'm sure you already know Kickserve has no authority over anything. It's a figment of his imagination and appears to be all he has in life. so we should all play along with him''''' but appreciate your post, in forum most can appreciate.

Just so you all know I did look in a few boxes and still nothing I did find an OTB ticket that I bought but that wasn't from the race track And the main reason I went to the Belmont was because my buddy who was driving us there reminded me of skipping Woodstock so I could make " banana splits " at $1.25 minimum wage I needed to make extra money since I graduated HS and would be off to North Texas State in another month or two. I found about 3 Mickey Mantle auto graph baseballs with his signature on the sweet part of the ball. Found a Wayne Gretzky doll 99 Mattel in its original box in mint condition I paid $2.99 for it . One of these days have to really go thru all my stuff. The Gretsky box also is in french Le magnifique
Morris I never knew he got beat Was that before the Triple crown ? Travers is run in September I think
I love Saratoga.. what a great track Would always go to the Travers there. Not sure if its still run there. I never followed the flats. I lived near Yonkers Raceway and they were all trotters .
One of my all time favorite stories was one night I was 14 or 15 and we got in Yonkers and before we sat down in the hallway was a newstand , There was a heavy set guy, unshaven in an Italian T-shirt selling Orange Trotter or Blue Trotter programs,[ they would handicapp and predict winners} I asked him ' Sir which one is better the Orange or Blue program. He looked at me and said " sonny if I knew which one was F.. ing better do you think I would be selling this shit here right now" wow what a stupid question I asked. When I became Principal many years later I retell that story to my staff on opening day .. anyway I'm 72 my wife informed me and will still look The wooden plaque I bought at the other day at Goodwill for a few bucks said " Its weird being the same age as old people "

I am from Kentucky. My dad calculated odds at Churchill Downs and other racetracks. When Secretariat died the vet who did the autopsy was astounded at the size of the horse’s heart. He said in the over 2000 autopsies he had done he had never seen one that size. He claimed it was twice the size of any he had ever seen. Just watched video’s of his races. Won Belmont by 31 lengths!
Amazing animal.

Damn searched my entire office with boxes never opened since my move. What I found was great except couldn't even find the Belmont programs and losing tickets Found signed baseballs wheaties boxes Hartland Figurines Start up figurines , miniature football helmets from all my HS I was principal at or coached at ,about 20 Smith and Street Basketball magazines 12 Blue Ribbons basketball yearbooks Sporting News newspapers, Plaques from NY State Championships , More Wheaties boxes with Jordan Giants winning the Super bowl etc
Think my wife is right about going thru all these boxes . Think I should bring my son up to my office and let him see all this because my wife will box everything together and all will go to " Goodwill " ' wheni am gone.

There is a story in every box. I took out my all time favorite trophys. I thought, I had already taken it out. Its a basic 12 " basketball trophy and says Tri Valley Christmas Tournament Consulations runner ups 1996 It was a Christmas tourney with 4 teams in it . I played Rondout Valley in the 1st game and they were the favorite to win Joe Ia the Ad was a good friend of mine and a few weeks before the games a team dropped out of his tournament , He called every school to fill in 2 games. It just so happened that I had 2 open games on my schedule[ we were allowed 18 games . So we replaced the team that dropped out. Then 2 nights before the game I suspended 2 of my starters and 2 other kids on the bench. I had 7 varsity players and we bought up 3 JV players . The JV players were allowed to drop back to JV as long as they didn't exceed the max 18 games Anyway we open up against Rondout Valley with a front line of 6'6,6'6 and 6'7 all white kids and one was a D-1 player. I have all black puerto rican kids 6'0, 6'1 6'1 and 5'11 and 5'10 Missing my leading rebounder and scorer. I needed the JV kids in an emergency and to make the pre-game warm up line look respectful. You can't go out warm up in a layup line with 7 ot 8 kids We arrive and I tell Joe I the whole story.
Rondout is killing us everywhere.. I can't get a rebound and they are missing shots but getting their own rebounds . I am pressing because the only advantage I have is speed. We lost the 1st game of the tourney by 15-20 points , It could of been worse Now Tri valley wins there 1st game so I;m in the consolation game and a long drive home and tomorrow another long drive to the 3rd or 4th place game. So Joe the athletic Dir unbeknown to me orders and makes up 4th place trophies for the next day We drive home and the next day take that long bus ride back up to Tri Valley. I still have a depleted team and I lose by 6-10 pts in the next game vs Ontera HS When our game is over they ask my team to not go in the locker room They bring out a table with all the 3rd place trophies But Joe knowing how tough it was for me and also wanting to thank me being a replacement teams had trophies made up for 4th place. So my kids names were all announced and they all got a trophy . On the bus ride back you would of thought we won the X-mas tourney. As our bus pulled into the school parking lot I held up the trophy and said : guys 4th place out of 4 teams in the Tournament in upstate NY Lets not forget this and win the NY state Championship, I carried that trophy all year and although we made it to the NY State Finals and lost if you ask any of my kids today they will say they treasure that 4th place trophy over their runner up NY state final medal And to think that 3 of those kids passed away I took it out of a box the other day and put it right next to my computer . It doesn't deserve to be put in a box hidden away .. because I'm looking for some lost tickets
