"I was trying to get out of it, but they said I had to play," said Nielsen.")
- After following Lonnie at Allianz in Des Moines in 2004, I filed a firsthand report on how manifestly difficult it was for the rookie to focus amidst the constant well wishes of long-time acquaintances and well-meaning strangers, especially in the relaxed atmosphere promoted by the Champions Tour (note the close of this article:

And it's close to conventional wisdom that there's often a problem for players to get out of their own way and let things happen and get untracked in especially meaningful events, be it a return to their local stomping grounds or some other special motivation, but in those instances when those playing with a special passion not shared with the rest of the field do manage to make it to the weekend in contention, they are very strong candidates to keep it going on moving day, and decent prospects for making it to the closing holes as part of the storyline . . . It's also a fact that some players are proud rank and file PGA members that shine brightest among their peers and colleagues, while others have a penchant for rising to the occasion when the blue blazers of the U.S.G.A. are on the scene . . . Lonnie has his work cut out for him, but it's a moment he relishes going in.
