Two bartenders have been criminally charged after an intoxicated patron left their bar and allegedly caused a fatal crash.
Texas bartenders Shafay Look, 34, and Jon Ward, 56, in Galveston, Texas, were charged with ?selling an alcoholic beverage to an intoxicated person? ? a 50-year-old woman named Gerilyn Weberlein ? who in June allegedly crashed her car into two bicyclists 15 minutes after leaving the bar.

Both victims were treated in the emergency room; one suffered a broken arm and cuts, and the other, a 23-year-old man named Marco Beltran, died the following morning.

The Chronicle reports that the bar?s surveillance video showed Look and Ward serving Weberlein despite her spilling drinks, stumbling, and needing the assistance of other customers to stand.
According to local news station, Weberlein was charged with intoxication assault and intoxication manslaughter. Look and Ward each face a fine of up to $500 and one year in jail.

Yes. Difficult as the situation is, I believe they can and should held accountable. The tough part is that you are running a business either for yourself or someone else and at what point do you piss off a customer and cut them off? Eventually they quit coming if you cut them off. Also, as mentioned above, it's hard to tell if someone is over the legal limit.

Serving someone who is visibly intoxicated for the sole purpose of profiting off them is something you should be held accountable for.

How do you determine the ones that are not completely obvious, though?

Tough situation.....

The reason they're being tried in this one is because it was obvious and it is on video. That's the difference. I bartended for a couple of years a while back and I had to cut people off on occasion. The most difficult time is when you are cutting them off and they are beligerant. Most often they actually forget that it happedned because they were "drunk" and other times they thanked me the next time they came in. The ones that didn't come back we didn't want the liability for anyway. If somebody can't find their own mouth to drionk the drink .........it's pretty obvious. When somebodypisses theri pants while sitting at the bar.....it's pretty obvious. Bartendeders are made well aware of their obligation when it comes to over serving. Mangaement is also plenty fine with it as their liquor license can be pulled if foun dguilty as well.

No, but they are being held accountable for for what they did before she left. I think more bars should be accountable like this. They are essentially drug dealers and need to distribute their toxic product responsibly. They were serving her when she couldn't even stand up and let her leave alone in that condition.

Before you know it bars will have a 2 drink limit to cover their asses when shit like this happens.
It's the lady's fault that hit the bikers. How much you wanna bet that those bikers were riding down the middle of the road but, that's another story.
