In the win, starting quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt broke his hand. Justin Holland threw the winning touchdown pass to running back Joel Dressen with 53 seconds left.
Van Pelt, the fourth quarterback in Division I history to throw for 5,000 yards and rush for 2,000, immediately had surgery and expects to play Tuesday despite having a 2 1/2 -inch titanium rod in his throwing hand.
``It's my mom's stubbornness that's carried me through college football,'' said Van Pelt, whose father was an NFL linebacker. ``If you're going to go out there and be a pansy little guy, you're not going to get that far. Sometimes you've got to play when you've got medical issues. So what?''
Van Pelt, who threw for 18 touchdowns, was the team's leading rusher with 884 yards this season, scoring nine TDs. Marcus Houston led the team with 10 rushing scores.
Colorado State, which won its last two games to finish with a winning record for the 10th straight season, is 4-5 all-time in bowl games. The Rams won two straight before a 17-3 defeat to TCU in the Liberty Bowl last season.
Their running game will be a major challenge. They are balanced and special teams will be huge.
``We have been consistent all year. We need to be solid.''
