St. Louis @ New Orleans +6.5 / 51
When I first started investing on sports, over 14 years ago, a friend of mine gave me a list of ten things to remember when handicapping football. Since then I have either forgotten some of the things on the list, or found they were not very profitable and stopped playing them. However there was one thing on the list that seemed to stick with me over all of these years, and that is to play a home divisional dog in prime time. Actually home divisional dogs have always been a favorite of mine to play, but I never let it be the single reason I play a team. For example I played the lions yesterday, but not the skins as a dog although they both fit the role. Anyway back to tonight's game. I see many cappers in here calling tonight revenge game for the rams and they will be hyped for this one. I am guessing it does not take much for a team to get hyped when they play on monday night, especially when it is a heated rivalry as this has become. However I have to question the revenge factor for several reasons: 1) The rams have lost three out of four to these saints to include two in a row, so where was the revenge in the first meeting? I think the rams always try to get up for the Saints and have not taken them lightly in the last several years. 2) The rams are horrible in revenge situations. The rams are just 3-15 su and against the number against a team that beat them straight up and against the number in the first meeting and when the failed to cover the number by at least ten points in that first meeting they are just 1-5 su and ats the next time around. So I'm not biting on the revenge angle.
I do believe the home crowd will play a role in tonight's contest as that place can and will get very loud tonight as the Saints make their first appearance on monday night in seven years. Also I think injuries will play a key role in this contest. The rams defense has played outstanding this year and surprised everyone, however they are not that deep. Strong safety Adam Archuleta is out for Monday night's game at New Orleans following his second concussion in three weeks. Rich Coady, his backup, has a sprained ankle. In practice Thursday McCleon was the free safety and Kim Herring, normally the free safety, moved to strong safety.
"We're just trying to be cautious," coach Mike Martz said before the workout. "I really believe Rich will start, but with the ankle the way it is now, it's going to take a few days until it gets to the point where he can take all the snaps."
The front line gave Warner fits in the first meeting and I think they have an edge again tonight. In fact everyone has had trouble with the Saints front as they lead the league with 45 sacks. I also believe Rams Coach Martz has made a mistake by encouraging Warner to run with the ball. He needs to," Martz said. "There's some coverage stuff where (defenses) have started to go so deep, and if he has to hold (the ball) for a certain length of time I'd like to see him take off and go with it and just go down."
I think this is a mistake as Warner running as a chance to lead to turnovers, and/or injuries. A turnovers make or break games like this, and that is where the saints have the advantage in fact in the last two contests combined the rams have had 13 turnovers.
I get the home team in a game that has been decided by 7 or less points in the last four meetings, getting points, and they are better at protecting the ball? I'm in.
Saints +6.5
Saints ML +210
I also am taking the under, I think both teams will try to get their star backs very involved early, and it should be a tight contested matchup.
