I've done quite a bit of research for this CWS, and I keep coming back to the Gamecocks of USC.
Let's start with experience. USC played three games in last year's CWS, and in 2002, lost the first game before advancing all the way to the final.
Next, power. USC hit the most homers in the country, and in Omaha, where the ball fly outs of that park, this is a major advantage.
The pitching is very solid, and more importantly, they hardly issue walks. Their staff has by far the fewest walks allowed on the season among the eight CWS teams. Keeping guys off base is a big thing in this tourney. Meanwhile, they had a pitcher taken in the first, second and third rounds of the draft. They all throw hard and rack up strikeouts.
USC's defense is about the same, if not a tad better, then the other contenders in the tourney, so call that a wash.
USC had seven players drafted. That's a big number for me as well. Talent is immense.
Breaking down the tourney, I really think just 2 teams -- Texas, Miami and USC -- have a real shot at winning.
At +500 (my local), I can't pass up USC. To be honest, I'm most worried about their first game Sat against Call-Fullerton, who has a stud No. 1 pitcher.
But, USC knows how big the first game is after the last two years, plus their ace was picked in the first round of the MLB draft, so he ain't shabby.
USC to win the CWS, 200 to win a grand and a beach vacation.
Go COCKS!!
