I've done quite a bit of research for this CWS, and I keep coming back to the Gamecocks of USC.

Let's start with experience. USC played three games in last year's CWS, and in 2002, lost the first game before advancing all the way to the final.

Next, power. USC hit the most homers in the country, and in Omaha, where the ball fly outs of that park, this is a major advantage.

The pitching is very solid, and more importantly, they hardly issue walks. Their staff has by far the fewest walks allowed on the season among the eight CWS teams. Keeping guys off base is a big thing in this tourney. Meanwhile, they had a pitcher taken in the first, second and third rounds of the draft. They all throw hard and rack up strikeouts.

USC's defense is about the same, if not a tad better, then the other contenders in the tourney, so call that a wash.

USC had seven players drafted. That's a big number for me as well. Talent is immense.

Breaking down the tourney, I really think just 2 teams -- Texas, Miami and USC -- have a real shot at winning.

At +500 (my local), I can't pass up USC. To be honest, I'm most worried about their first game Sat against Call-Fullerton, who has a stud No. 1 pitcher.

But, USC knows how big the first game is after the last two years, plus their ace was picked in the first round of the MLB draft, so he ain't shabby.

USC to win the CWS, 200 to win a grand and a beach vacation.

Go COCKS!!

USC is starting to look like the ballclub I wrote about six days ago.

Fullerton's Windsor was just too tough in the opener, so now the Gamecocks, who are throttling Miami as i write this, have to beat Cal-Fullerton twice, which won't be easy.

Still, Fullerton has just two pitchers. Windsor, who threw 145 pitches on Saturday, and Romero, who threw 140 on Monday.

Romero likely won't pitch again until the final series if they advance.

Can only guess if Fullerton will just throw some punk out there Wed, and hope for a miracle, and then put all its eggs in the Windsor basket on 4 days rest Thursday.

If they try to let him go on 3 days and steal that first one, and he tires, look out, USC is gonna pound them.

Meanwhile, USC has enough arms to get through two games in decent shape I think.

I like what I'm seeing. Texas would be a whole different animal in the finals, but I'm still hoping against hope for my +500 wager on Cocks to win it all.

GL to all.

Be very careful here with South carolina. If they advance by beating Call Stat 2x then they will face Texas. Texas is 12 arms deep, fundamentally sound, best defense team around, and they have street that closes games like gagne. They also are on a tear hitting the ball.

Remember that the winner of bracket one and two play the best two out of three. I feel sorry for anyone in bracket two that has to play texas and all those pitchers. Heck, texas only needs three or four runs to win. They can bunt, hit and run, play defense..............bla bla bla. They are going to win.

I hope south carolina wins at least one game from call state, then both teams pitching staffs will be suffering.

JP howell 6 days rest
Sam Lecure 5 days rest
Justin Simmons starts tomorrow against georgia, last year he had a chance at player of the year. He has pitched two year at CWS now.

Texas will not beat themselves and that is a great bet.

then it is back to JP and Sam in the two out of three with simmons available.

As a Gamecock fan I apreciate the optimism, but I'm afraid everyone is playing for second place behind Texas. I look for SCAR to hopefully win tonight as our bats seem to have awoken. We also have a ton of "second string" pitchers to throw tonight if necessary, all with solid numbers (Fletcher, Hempy, McCamie, McDonald, etc.).

Even if we win tonight AND tomorrow, I feel that Texas will be waiting in the wings licking their chops. What a talented damn team they are.

Our Cocks, and more importantly my 1G payoff, are still alive after Wednesday's hard-fought 5-3 win.

Now comes the tough part, beating this Windsor kid for Fullerton who shut them out on Saturday.

Still, USC does have its ace in Campbell going, he was drafted in the first round, and he hopefully will be a tad sharper than he was on the weekend.

Pressure is now clearly on Cal, especially after they lost twice to Stanford last year in this siuation.

Get me to the weekend boys, some way, some how.

GL to all.

Solid win for the Cocks. Good performance from Fletcher.

You're absolutely right though, getting past Windsor will be TOUGH. That guy is a fu*kin machine. On the positive side though, Matt Campbell threw one of his worst games last time out and they only got to him for two runs. Conversly, Windsor threw an incredible game that will be difficult (but not impossible) to duplicate. The Cocks should have better luck in the box having seen him before.

Anyway, good luck to you and the Cocks.
