The first weekend in May is rapidly approaching which means the field for the Kentucky Derby is starting to take form. The early odds for the first jewel of horse racing?s Triple Crown project three true contenders. We look at those horses and a live long shot to win the Run for the Roses:

American Pharoah:
American Pharoah put distance between itself and the rest of the Kentucky Derby favorites by winning the Rebel Stakes in March and has been among the notables since taking the Frontunner (G1) at Santa Anita last September. There are some concerns, however, that this Bob Baffert horse may not have run enough due to ligament issues and hasn?t been challenged.

Carpe Diem:
This horse has climbed the early Kentucky Derby odds, opening as big as 20/1 before winning the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) in early March despite a three-month layoff. Carpe Diem has had impressive showings in the Breeders? Cup, winning the Breeders? Futurity (G1) and placing second in the Breeders? Juvenile (G1). These odds will come down even more if he continues this pace at the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) in April.

Dortmund:
Another Baffett trainee, Dortmund staked his claim as a live Derby contender with a victory in the San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita in early March. Unlike his stablemate American Pharoah, Dortmund has been challenged in his races and has risen to the occasion each time. His sire, Big Brown, won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, so the Derby distance is in his blood.

El Kabeir:
The gap between the trio of American Pharoah, Carpe Diem, and Dortmund, and the rest of the potential Kentucky Derby field is massive ? as evidenced by the jump in odds for El Kabeir. He?s risen up the board with a dominating 2 3/4-length win in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct in early March. Jockey C.C. Lopez introduced a new running style for El Kaneir in that race, starting far off the pace then turning it on to blow past the field in the home turn. This horse isn?t afraid to fight it?s way to the front.
