This is a new series that I am putting together to hopefully help you guys out. I will try to put out a synopsis on as many teams as I can about every 3 days. I will start out in the Big 12 (my conference) and work my way around from there. Some of the information on teams I put out may not be as good as the hometown guy or their resident expert so by all means please chime in if you have anyting extra. But hopefully these previews will give you a better grasp upon what teams have.

First Team Nebraska Cornhuskers

2001 Record 11-2 7-1 Big 12 North 2nd place

Returning Starters: 12 (5) Offense (7) Defense

The burning Question: Who will replace Heisman Trophy winning QB Eric Crouch???

Answer: Junior QB Jamaal Lord a redshirt who stands 6-2 and weighs 215 lbs. Jamaal really is an impressive athlete 4.59 40 yard dash, 36 " vertical Jump and was in the top 5 for the entire team in all physical tests from winter conditioning.

Lord who used to carry the tag of a loafer and a bad attitude guy quickly changed that this spring. Jamaal wore the green jersey meaning he did not see any contact. However he threw the ball well made great decisions and is a very smooth operator who has gained the full confidence of the NU staff. While Lord is no Eric Crouch, he is definitely more elusive in the pocket and has better scrambling ability while Crouch had great straight line speed. The offense under lord will see the QB less as Lord is not much of the homerun threat that Crouch was but it also speaks of the improvement of the Nu running backs and receivers.

There is an interesting battle for the # 2 QB. Sophomore Mike Stuntz 6-1 195 4.71and True Freshman Curt Dukes 6-2 205 4.75. Dukes is an interesting story . He graduated HS a semester early so he could partake in NU's spring drills and he did not dissapoint. Very much in the mold of Scott Frost Dukes is very adept at running the option and a decent passer. His overall decision making skills were solid and he litterally ran over opposing tacklers. While he does not have the greatest speed at this point of his career he is no slouch and a very good and strong athlete. Soph Qb Stuntz is best known for "The Play" He threw the 63 yard scoring strike to Erich Crouch that put Oklahoma away last year. Stuntz is a good athlete whom is Nu's best overall passer. He is a little better athlete than Dukes, but insiders say that Dukes looks a little more natural at QB. It looks like a dead heat right now between the 2 and the QB that does not get the #2 spot will redshirt. Other Qbs are Brett Lindstrom, and Joe Chrisman.

RB: Dahhran Diedrick 6-0 225 Sr. reasserted himself in the spring game by gaining nearly 100 yards on less than 10 carries. The Big 12 leading rusher is now a senior and looks to take a more vocal and leadership enhancing role for NU. While Diedrick is not overly fast 4.62 40 he is very tough and a dependable runner. Diedrick runs tough between the tackles and understands the offense well. Jr RB Josh Davis was the Co #1 with Diedrick until after the spring game. DAvis 5-10 215 4.53 has been bothered by a bad hamstring most of the spring. Davis is a very fast and strong runner. He is the 3rd fastest man on the NU squad. He was very good returning kicks last year and is a solid option at RB. He will definitley add a nice change of pace to the NU attack next year.

Thunder Collins 6-2 195 Sr. has been switched to the WB position but may still see time at RB. This move is by no means a demotion, but more of an attempt by Solich (who calls the offensive plays) to get the best players on the field at the same time. Collins has good speed 4.55 40 and Extreme toughness who played injured down the stretch. He may still see carries but may look to be more usefull at the WB position.

Other options Nu has are Redshirt Fr Marquess Simmons 5-8 190 4.49. He had an outstanding spring and brings pure speed to the NU backfield. he is suprisingly tough for his size and has a very bright future at NU. He reminds many insider of former Nu superstar RB Derek Brown. Redshirt FR Cory Ross 5-5 207 5.0 is not very fast but has outstanding quickness and moves. He is very overweight right now as he is coming off shoulder surgery. He can be a major league weapon for NU returning kicks and catching passes out of the backfield especially if he can lose some weight. Other less talented players in the mix are DeAnte Grixby 5-8 205, and Robin Miller 5-11 250 who will do nothing more this year than come in at garbage time and give opposing defenses a break.

FB: Nu has not had a dominant FB since the departure of Joel Mackovicka. Jr FB Judd Davies 6-0 255 4.9 has not been the same since incurring neck and back injuries as a freshman. So FB Steve Kriewald 5-10 255 4.9 a promisng player has also been hampered by injuries. Curt Tomasevic a walkon with a 37 " vertical jump and 4.6 40 yard Dash 5-11 225 may steal some playing time from the both of them. Incoming Freshman hometown product Dane Todd of Lincoln SE HS 5-10 235 is a Tom Rathman Clone and will be a good one before he is done. A guy that NU is counting will be Jr Kyle Ringenberg 6-4 255 who has good speed 4.75 and tremendous hands. But that remains to be seen.

OL: With the loss of Fonoti and Raiola to the NFL Draft in recent years the O-line to outsiders looks to be a weak spot. However I have been told that this will be the most talented group that NU has fielded since Frankie Solich has taken the helm. If this group can gell early look out. One thing I want to point out about NU Olines in recent years is that they have looked very fat compared to those freaks that paved the way to National Title caliber teams between 1993-1997. This spring OLine Coach Tenopir layed down an ultimatum to his troops and they took heart as they have come out leaner and much more strong and nimble. The new leader looks to be REdshirt Fr Richie Incognito 6-2 295. He is one of the strongest and most outspoken players on the NU team. He is versatile as he can play and excell at any given position along the line but looks to start out at Guard. He was so good last year that he was working out with the first team offense as a true freshman but Nu decided to redshirt him to preserve his eligibility as they knew that their days with Fonoti were probably numbered. C John Garrison Sr 6-4 295 is a master technician at his position who uses his leverage and quickness well. He is also NU's deep snapper. A very cerebral player who will not get you beat. Sr Guard Wes Cody 6-2 300 tied the Nebraska record for bench press at 500lbs and is only the 2nd player ever to do that at NU. He is a rock at his position and has vastly improved his technique. Other players to watch are Nate Kolterman SR 6-3 305, Dan Villi Waldrop 6-5 325 (whom shed 30 pounds this spring) Mike Erickson 6-4 305 and Tim Green whom have all had good springs and are significant talent upgrades as to what NU has put out in recent years.

WR/WB: I have already discussed the prospects of Thunder Collins. Wilson Thomas 6-6 220 4.6 JR will pose problems for many defensive backs that he will see. While he does not have great speed, he carries his pads extremely well and is the best threat Nu has had at receiver since Irving Fryar. He is a great blocker, runs very good routes and is intimidating on the gridiron. RS FR Ross Pilkington an original Nebraska recruit from the 1999 class has also made a big impression. He has good speed 4.57 and spent 2 years in the Colorado Rockies organization. So don't question his athleticism. He is very much in the mold as Career Receiviing leader Matt Davison. He will be a nice option for Lord to throw to. Other players in the mix will be So Ben Zajicek 6-0 200 4.55, SR Ben Cornelsen 5-11 195 4.55 .

TE: This looks to be a weak spot for the NU offense. Gone is the big playmaker Tracy Wistrom. Aaron Golliday Sr 6-4 290 is a wide body and a good blocker but not the threat to sneak behind safeties. Phil Peetz 6-2 260 SR is also a in the mold of a blocker rather than pass catcher. Inujured Sr Jon Bowling 6-3 235 also looks to contribute. This will be a dimension that will be sorely lacking that has been a staple of the NU offense in the past.

PK: Josh Brown 6-1 190. and Sandro De Angelis 5-8 190 Soph are no Kris Brown. Brown has the stronger leg but De Angelis is much more accurate. Both players are on scholarship and could be pushed by a freshman walk on from California.

NU Defense

NU Defense

Defense

A well respected source told me that Craig Bohl was indeed fired after the Orange Bowl, but it had nothing to do with Nu's performance of that and the 62 point shellacking that Colorado gave them. He was going thorugh some awful personal issues and he has had rifts with Solich in the past due to that. However Charlie McBride told a group of us recently that this guy "Bohl" will be all the rage once he gets some talent. Bohl really does have a good defensive mind and this will be the year that the monkey gets off of his back as NU will be significantly more talented at every positon defensively this year.

NU did lose 2 players this winter and Spring. Dt Mania Brown to BYU which really was an ugly story and DB Rodney Landingham whom will probably join his brother at Oregon State. However the cupboard is far from bare.

DE: Demoine Adams SR gained 30lbs this winter. He checks in at 6-3 265lb.s now. He is very quick 4.75 40 yard dash and was the lifter of the year this year for NU a very coveted honor from winter conditioning. While he does not stack up to the standout DE's of NU's past he has really elevated his level of play. Preseason All Big 12 and All American Chris Kelsay 6-6 275 sat out the spring with injuries but is definitely an outstanding player. He has good pass rushing ability and the temprament you expect of a good DE. Look for this guy to notch double digit sacks this year. JR Benard "Crunk Juice" Thomas 6-4 270 is a different player than of his first 2 years at NU. He was so good that he did not redshirt as a freshman. However he has gained much needed strength and size and was unblockable all spring. He looks to get significant playing time this year, and is largely thought of as NU's most TALENTED DE. But can he put it all together? Justin Smith Sr 6-5 270 is a solid player and will get valuable minutes. He is not the most talented guy but is very strong and works extremely hard. Trevor Johnson 6-4 250 Jr is a converted TE with a world of talent. Extremly fast for his position 4.65 and strong he is a guy that Nu will put in on Passing downs for his ability to chase Qb's and provide pressure. He has a very bright future at his position according to NU Coaches.

DT: As I mentioned NU lost its best player who was a freshman Mania Brown to BYU. Very ugly story that I don't have the the time to include here but will answer if anybody wants the true info. However it was a blessing in disguise because it really opened the door for a guy you will be hearing a lot about in the near future.

Reshirt FR Seppo Evwarawaye 6-5 305 4.95 is a freak. Came to NU from Finland by way of Laurel NE as an exchange student. Absolutely unblockable and very sculpted for his size. He looks to provide a presence that NU has been lacking since the likes of Jason Peter and Steve Warren. Coach Solich says if he can improve his endurance to look out!!!!! His nickname is "hungry hungry Seppo"

LeKevin Smith 6-3 305 4.95 from Georgia was a highly coveted player that is recovering from 2 major knee surgeries. Another athletic guy with a mean streak whom looks to provide immediate punch for NU at DT. Has tremendous technique and strength and looks to be healthy by fall camp which will be bad news for opposing offensive lineman.

Jon Clanton SR 6-2 290 is an outstanding athlete 4.7 40 yard dash and extremely strong. However he does not defend the run particularly well and relies too much on his strenght. He was half of the problem at the DT pos last year in those losses to Miami and Co but that was the best that NU had last year. He is by no means a bad player, but will be used more on pass rushing downs this year.

Ryan Bingham JR 6-3 285 is another freak that NU has on the offensive line. This guy is absolutely nuclear looking and was very disruptive this spring and played well in reserve last year for NU. You will be hearing a lot more about this guy in the future.

Other players who will provide nice depth to the position will be Patrick Kabongo Jr 6-6 305, Jason Lohr a 6th year Sr who was a very good run defender 6-2 280.

LB: Another position that Nu figures to be better at by leaps and bounds.

SLB: Sr Scott Shanle 6-2 240 4.8 is a solid but not a spectacular player. Daniel Graham and Jeremy Shockey made him look very bad but other than those 2 guys he did a fine job manning his position. Rarely out of position and a sure tackler he only looks to be better this year and will be the #1 guy at the Sam position for NU. Ira Cooper So 6-2 220 4.9 was a highly touted guy coming out of HS but has yet to really assert himself. Gabe Fries 6-2 230 SR 4.85 also looks to be in the mix.

MLB: So Barret Ruud 6-2 240 4.8whom manned this position as a true freshman was very good last year but is coming off of a groin injury this spring. A very instincitve and physical player who will make it treacherous for opposing running backs in the middle this fall. Sr Tony Tata 6-1 240 5.0 and Sr Steve Safranek also will add depth to this position.

WLB: Two words: Demorrio Williams. JR 6-1 205 4.65 The #2 JUCO player in the country this past year made a name for himself this spring. He brings back memories of another Husker great from this position Terrel Farley 95-96. He is very disruptive and had 13 unassisted tackles in the spring game. While not very big he is very strong, quick and has a nose for the ball. He flies in well on the blitz and is adept in busting through traffic and punishing opposing ball carriers. Watch out for this guy fellas. He was good enough to come in and get a co #1 position with another stud whom was injured this spring TJ Hollowell JR 6-1 225 4.68. TJ is a very quick and athletic player at his position whom should have been manning this position more last year. Another wild card at this position is a freak of nature by the name of Jason Richenberger. So 6-1 245 4.6. He will be used on passing downs as speed is his greatest asset. This guy is extremely talented and the only thing holding him back is that he has had to switch positions twice and has had a hard time picking up some of the NU defense. Blanchard Johnson 5-11 230 JR will also get some reps for Nu.

Safety: Gone from this positon are excuse me I forgot how to tackle Dion Booker and Willie Amos whom was switched to CB and subsquently injured with torn MCL/ACL. Phillip Bland whom played Rover as a true Freshman was inured late in the year and that really hurt NU. At 6-0 210 4.7 he drew numerous comparisons to Mike Brown. He is a vicious hitter that puts people in the right position when making checkoffs. NU has had a fine tradition of Safties and Bland will definitley add to that by the time he finishes his career at NU. His backups will be Super athletic Lannie Hopkins 6-2 220 Jr 4.6 whom may go back to the WLB position and SR Jerrel Pippens 6-3 200 4.7, a former walkon who is a very smooth and intelligient player.

CB: This could be a trouble spot for NU, unless an incoming freshman is as good as advertised. While set at 1 corner position SR Preseason All Big 12 DeJuan Groce 5-10 195 4.65 is a very solid player and while not very fast has tremendous technique and is also an electric punt returner for NU. Rodney Burgess JR 6-2 195 4.7 is pencilled in as the other starter and has good technique but is not very fast but is an outstanding leaper 37" vertical jump. Pat Ricketts 5-11 180 4.55 JR is now Nu's fastest corner minus the injured Amos (4.45). Ricketts is a nice player but does not have the technique or cover skills of either Burgess or Groce. Jr Lornell McPherson 5-9 190 4.75 will be used in the penny and nickel positions. He is the best tackling corner that NU has and looks to be a solid player. NU coaches are couting on incomign freshman Fabian Washington from Bradenton Fla. 6-0 175 4.3 . He only allowed 8 completions his entire career playing 5-A ball in florida and was also an electric player on offense. He sports a 40" vertical jump and looks to provide immediate help to the position that NU is dangerously thin at right now. Ralph Brown came in 1996 in a similar situation and flourished. Hopefully for NU Washington can have similar success. Underachieving Jr Terrell Butler 5-10 195 Jr 4.78 will also add depth to this position.

Insiders are expecting anywhere from a 2-4 loss season. The schedule for NU is brutal

8-24-02 BLACK COACHES ASSOCIATION CLASSIC @Lincoln, NE
ARIZONA STATE
8-31-02 TROY STATE
9-7-02 UTAH STATE
9-14-02 at Penn State
9-28-02 at Iowa State
10-5-02 McNEESE STATE
10-12-02 MISSOURI
10-19-02 at Oklahoma State
10-26-02 at Texas A&M
11-2-02 TEXAS
11-9-02 KANSAS (HC)
11-16-02 at Kansas State
11-29-02 COLORADO

While Lord will not be as good as Eric Crouch he will by no means be bad. His first real test will be on the road at Penn State. But he will have the benefit of having 3 games under his belt. If NU can come away victorious from that game they can suprise. While the defense will be more talented it is untested. NU has never excelled on the road under Solich and with so much youth at key positons this will not equate to success. While this may not be what you call a rebuilding year in NU don't expect too much but don't take them too lightly. With 8 home games again this season there is no reason they cannot win 9 games and play in a decent bowl. 2003 will be a year that you can mention BCS and NU in the same breath again.

I hate to report on OSU.....

but....
True freshman, Maurice Clarette, was chosen first by the Grey Captains as their starting tailback for the spring game. Incumbent Lydell Ross, was suprised by the choice of Clarette over himself as the overwhelming choice at tailback.

Clarette is the reigning Mr. Ohio and enlisted at OSU early...(His class graduates this coming June)...from Warren, OH. (Harding HS).
