I am going to St. Louis on biz in a couple of weeks, I am staying @ the St. Louis Marriott Pavilion Downtown. I have already got some tickets to a cards game, but if anyone can give recommendations on where to eat (types of local cusine), must see type things etc. I will be working during the day but nights are open. Any insight is appreciated.

TIA

Monk,

Kind of funny how things worked out, they are playing the Astros. Yes I will get my boy a cards shirt, he can wear it underneath his Giants Jersey;)

ryson, there is an area just north of the arch called Lacledes Landing. Lots of bars, some with bands. Place called Sho Me's is like a Hooters spinoff.

They moved the President at the Admiral casino up to the Landing as well. (Used to be right in front of the Arch). This is the most ornate and glitzy boat of the three on the Mississippi. For that reason I don't go there. I prefer the Casino Queen (take the Metrolink train across the river) or further north is the Alton Belle in Alton Illinois -- 20 minute drive. Both these casinos are older, opened in early nineties, the felt is worn and stained and the employees/dealers are tired yet rugged individualists. Seems like you have a better chance with dirty chips and all. FAST EDDIES is a must if you go to Alton; this bar is huge -- two bands most nights, good cheap giant shrimp and lots of girls. All kinds of girls.

If you go to the Casino Queen you are 5 minutes away from the worlds greatest gentlemens clubs. If you are so inclined let me know and I will do a separate post on the variety you will confront.

As far as food, you cannot beat Citizen Kanes in Kirkwood -- 10 minutes from downtown -- for steak and atmosphere. Dierdorf and Harts has great steak too, there may be one at Union Station right next to Savvis Center, I have only been to the one at Westport. If you try Citizen Kanes, get a reservation.

Down by the ballpark is Calicos which is a great place to enjoy libations, scenery, watch sports and eat. They have a two-page martini menu and offer some pretty nice cigars. The tour of the brewery is nicely done, the arch is ok if you don't mind cramped places, mainly the elevator car that takes you up is clausto-city. The museum beneath the arch is worth an hour of time. Can't go wrong. If the Blues are still in it when you visit go down to Savvis an hour and fifteen minutes before game time and they usually release decent seats for general public that were unused for promos etc.

If that Marriott Pavilion is the new one (not the one right across from busch) you are rockin! The best new sports bar in St. Louis is supposedly in there and you are walking distance to Union Station, Hooters, Savis, Busch. Mesopotamia of St. Louis. There is an awesome gift shop inside Busch (Hall of Fame Store) where you can buy caps from different eras and lots of great gear for Monk and your boy! Enjoy!

no pepper,

thanks for the insight, I like the advice on the riverboat casinos also. Yea the hotel that I am staying in is right across the street from the ballpark. In regards to the river boat casinos do you have to pay for your drinks? I went to KC a few weeks ago and hit the boats, went to harrahs. Pretty wierd rules, here is what I thought was bizzare, you could only lose $500 every hour, i.e if you place a $500 blackjack hand and lost, you have to wait for a few hours or something like that, you had to pay for your drinks. I walk in get some chips and sit down at a table, the cocktail lady comes by I order a drink, she comes back and says that costs $3.00. I am thinking WTF, I say OK and hand her a chip, her reply was "no sir, it has to be cash". I have played @ the casinos in LA. and although some of the rules of the games were different, the drinks were still free, but I was born and raised in CA so I cut my teeth in Nevada. If there are any caveats that I should know about please clue me in. I will have a car and a designated driver so about how far are the casinos you like to play @ from the hotel. Also if you don't mind I would like to get the info on the Gentlemans Entertainment (I may have to entertain some clients while I am there):grins: If ya like I can get your email from Jack, let me know.

thanks again,

Cocktails were once free on missouri boats. They passed legislation that put an end to that around '96. You can tip with chips but got to pay cash for liquor. Many of the hottest waitresses left after this law because the tips just weren't the same.

If you want to play for larger stakes -- go to Alton or Casino Queen because the Illinois side doesn't have the $500 loss ceiling "per cruise." I will post on the clubs and so forth later -- I gotta go do some runnin round right now

please do not go to the casino queen at night. this casino is in east st louis you can kind of compare it to south central la not near as bad but lots of killings drugs and that kind of shit happens there. a man was just carjacked there a couple of weeks ago. if you can get out of the city and experience the best casino we have which is not saying much go down 70 west to the earth city expressway exit south. drive down a mile or so and veering off to the right is harrahs casino. that is the nicest one it is a floating casino but you would never know it when you walk inside. you do pay for drinks if i remember right a bottle beer is 2.50 and draft is a 1.75 dont know how much mixed drinks are. they still have the 500 limit every 2 hours they are trying to get rid of it but it is still that limit harrahs has 2 casinos one on each side of the building if you lose 500 on one side you can walk over to the other side that minute and lose another 500 they are considered different casinos. that is one good thing about the queen and alton belle illinois does not have the loss limit. far as stuff to do depends on what night you are coming in and what your tastes are. really st louis is not a party city you wont see anything going on sunday-tuesday wednesday there are a couple of places that are ok thursday a little more and friday and saturday are pretty good. have fun and enjoy the gentlemans clubs.

Bean Counter,

Yea I have heard about East STL, not a place I want to visit. Not a huge strip bar fan, but when it comes to biz deals it seems strip bars and golf courses are great places. Don't know if it's because of a "relaxed" environment. I guess I should have listed what I am looking for, I am more of a game, dinner, martini & cigar type person (no pepper suggested Calicos). I am married so the meat market type places just don't appeal. The reason I am asking for suggestions because I travel a lot, I usually don't leave the hotel room other than for work. When I go to new places I am trying to absorb some of the local culture etc. (instead of sitting in the hotel room with room service working all night), do you have to buy drinks @ the IL casinos?

thanks!!

Drinks are not free at Illinois casinos either. What bean counter says is true and I would valet if you go to the Queen. Like I say, I park at the Landing and take the train over there and have never been concerned with safety. The way I heard it was some thugs noticed this older gentleman winning $$$ at the tables and followed him out to the parking lot and demanded his cash. The old guy wouldn't give it up and they shot him. They got busted eventually. Where isn't there crime?

Harrahs is where I go mostly, but it is quite a drive from downtown, especially with traffic problems.

More St. Louis restaurants:

Shannons ? Downtown on 7th street. Walking distance from hotel, Busch stadium. Great steak and seafood. Mike Shannon, Cardinal broadcaster, owns this place. Lots of baseball memorabilia d?cor. Sports Open Line show on KMOX is broadcast from here after weekend home games.

Morgan Street Brewery ? On the Landing. This is a big 2-story indoor/outdoor bar with microbrews that never has a cover charge. Good for warmup drinks if you are headed to casino. They have pool and darts. I have never eaten there so cannot comment on food. The later it gets, the younger it gets and from 12:00 to 3:00 it?s a lot of jager-imbibed twenty somethings fighting for space on the dance floor. Sometimes literally.

Harry?s ? On Market Street. Awesome place with terrific view of city. Only go here if the weather is nice because you got to sit on the patio and have a cigar. Food is good. Good place to take client or prospect.

The Hill ? Italian district. Great place to take clients, prospects, mother in law, hookers. There are two places I stick with over there: Charlie Gitto?s (matter of fact there?s one of these downtown too) and Cunetto?s. Gitto?s is a little classier and better food but Cunetto?s is casual and they don?t take reservations. Get there after 5:30 on a weeknight and be prepared to hangout in the bar for an hour. Gitto?s is where Tommy Lasorda always hangs out in StL. You can also see the house where Yogi Berra grew up on the Hill.

The new sports bar I was trying to remember is Jacques. It is in the new Sheraton, caddy corner from Savis Center. You can walk there from your hotel in less than 15 minutes, although I would not recommend walking back after dark. Take a cab. BTW, we have a Mortons too. It is Clayton.

Titty bars: Well there are some really wild places (Roxys) that I have been to that are not exactly in good neighborhoods. Matter of fact, a few of them should be required tours for Fire Marshall training. Places where the shower dances (at least two showerers at a time) begin at 1:30 AM and you can get special services in trailers that border the parking lot. (I am in sales and have taken guys over there).

I have been to these types of places everywhere from Anchorage to Miami and never seen the likes of these shower antics in a ?public? club. The first time I went to Roxys I kept looking over my shoulder for the SWAT team as I was sure this type of highly illegal erotica would be raided at any moment. This place is in Brooklyn, Illinois and I would not recommend going here unless you have been drinking heavily and feel you have the strength of ten men.

Your better option is Diamond Caberet and/or PTs. Easy to get to: go across the Mississippi river bridge (East) and stay in your right lane. Take Hwy 3 South. Go to first traffic lites ? less than a mile ? and you will see them on your right. This area is entirely safe, I guarantee. DC is more upscale but not snobby and expensive like a Gold Club type place. You can get in free to either place with a ticket stub from a Cardinals or Blues game. DC offers lapdancing for thirty bucks, but they don?t constantly hound you to do a lap dance. PTs is a little raunchier, older, good long neck beer type place with three or four stages. Both these places are totally nude and the girls are beautiful. The girls are truly beautiful.

ryson, what about the golf? Are you bringing your clubs? I usually play golf out west here but if you need to take somebody out I can recommend some places. What do you sell? I sell software to telephone companies.

ryson i think no pepper covered it well for you. i will be honest that is the first incident i have heard down at the queen like that the guy that did the jacking there also tried one at the alton belle. we used to go to the queen and belle during the day because it used to float we would hang out on top and enjoy the cruise but they do not float anymore.

i really dont have any insight i like the meat market places. we used to go to aj's at the adam mark hotel the other places i like on the landing are the trainwreck saloon--bar st louis--banana joes. there is a hooters in union station and also a hard rock cafe. if you like horse racing fairmount park is about a 20 minute ride into illinois the horses at fairmount are absolutely shitty i think most are ready for the glue factory but they have simulcast racing and betting. also the hill that no pepper mentioned is really good italian food. far as things to absolutely do here in my opinion there are none. i usually go the other way spend alot of time at lake of the ozarks in the summer. good luck and have fun.

almost forgot i also hang out at the have a nice day cafe it is kind of a seventies kind of place but i really like it it is in union station also. harrahs casino is a little bit of a drive maybe 20-25 minutes from st louis but if you like the casino i think it is worth the time if you stay there a while. if you go to harrahs and are here on the weekend you can drive down 270 south and hit the page east exit stay to the right all the way around it will take you to west port plaza they have the funnybone comedy club there also a few good bars. the bars on the landing stay open until 3 am the ones further west are all open until 1am. like i said have fun.
