i just get the feeling this could have a major bearing on side and total here. anyone got anything newer than this?

Stewart might be ready to play

PONTIAC -- Even if his injured ankle isn't completely healthy, James Stewart's return can help the Lions' limping running game.
Stewart went through a second straight practice without any ill effects Tuesday and is hopeful of playing against the Green Bay Packers Thursday.
Stewart has missed the last four games with a sprained left ankle, sustained in the fourth quarter against Tennessee. Without Stewart, the Lions' running attack his disintegrated.
They have gained only 224 yards on the ground and averaged 2.6 yards per carry in the four games.
The running game ranks last in the NFL and has been so ineffective that in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss at Arizona, Coach Marty Mornhinweg called 31 pass plays and only one run.
A key for Stewart will be if he doesn't have a setback from Tuesday's hard practice. He gave it a full test Tuesday.
"It felt better than what I thought," Stewart said. "I'm optimistic, but I'll let them decide."
Stewart was on the way to better his performance in 2000, his first as a Lion. He rushed for 1,184 yards, a career high, and scored 11 touchdowns. In the first five games, Stewart gained 323 yards and had a 4.8-yard rushing average.
Injuries to receivers and the lack of an established running threat have caused teams to blitz quarterback Charlie Batch heavily. Batch was heartened by having Stewart practice.
"If he wasn't ready to play, I don't think he'd be out there now," Batch said.

Injuries/personnel
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test on return specialist Desmond Howard's right shoulder showed a bruise from a hit on the opening kickoff Sunday. He is questionable.
If Howard plays Thursday, it will be on returns and not wide receiver, Coach Marty Mornhinweg said.
Wide receiver Bert Emanuel will not need surgery on his left knee and might return before the end of the season. Emanuel was injured Sunday, too.
... Strong safety Ron Rice was put on injured reserve. He is out for the season. Rice injured his neck Sunday.

Statistics
A category to watch Thursday is sacks, where the Packers have a wide edge on offense and defense.
In sacks per play, the Packers rank third on offense and second on defense. The Lions are 26th on offense and 17th defensively.
The Lions rank third in passing, but they remained last in rushing in the weekly rankings. They moved up from seventh in passing from the previous week.
Defensively, the Lions continue to fare poorly. They are 28th or worse in six categories and last in two - first downs and points allowed per game.

Packers have history vs. winless teams

After last week's disappointing 23-20 loss at home to Atlanta, many Packers fans are nervous about Thursday's matchup against 0-9 Detroit.

The Lions have lost their last six games by seven points or fewer, suggesting they're ready to finally win a game. Plus, no team has ever gone 0-16.

Playing a winless team this deep into the season isn't a first for the Packers. On Nov. 16, 1997, the Packers were defending Super Bowl champs, 8-2, and looking unbeatable heading into a matchup with the NFL's worst team, 0-10 Indianapolis.

What appeared on the surface to be an extra bye week became the upset of the season as the Colts shocked the Packers 41-38. The next spring the Colts drafted quarterback Peyton Manning with the first pick of the NFL draft.

When asked about the similarities, Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman wasn't worried.

"If that's a parallel, I think we went to the Super Bowl that year," Freeman said. "I hope that's the way it ends up. You can't look back. Everything is ahead of us now."

IT'S BEEN SEVEN YEARS
The last time the Packers played on Thanksgiving Day was 1994. They lost at Dallas 42-31 after building a 17-6 halftime lead.

Third-string quarterback Jason Garrett, however, rallied the Cowboys for 36 second-half points to record the win.

The last time they played at Detroit on Thanksgiving was 1986. The Packers won 44-40 when Walter Stanley returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown with 45 seconds left in the game.

IT'S BEEN FIVE YEARS
By virtue of defeating Detroit 28-6 in the regular-season opener, the Packers have a chance to sweep the season series from the Lions for the first time since 1996, when the Packers posted 28-18 and 31-3 victories. The last time Detroit swept the season series was 1991, a season in which it reached the NFC championship game.

BY THE NUMBERS
- The Packers are 10-17-2 on Thanksgiving Day, including a 4-10-1 mark against Detroit.

- In their last 16 games the Packers are 11-5, while the Lions are 4-12.

- Detroit is 29th in the NFL with a minus-11 turnover ratio.

- Lions' quarterback Charlie Batch ranks third from the bottom among NFC quarterbacks for fourth-quarter passer rating at 68.1.

- Packers' quarterback Brett Favre ranks second in the NFC for passer rating on third downs at 92.6.

- Detroit's defense is worst in the NFC for opponents' touchdown percentage in the red zone at 58.1 percent.

- The Lions allow an NFL-high 6.39 yards on first down.

Jue to get first NFL start

Jue, however, didn't make that start as Butler was able to overcome sprained cartilage in his chest and play Nov. 4 against Tampa Bay.

On Monday, though, it was made official that Jue will start Thursday at Detroit, as the Packers placed Butler on the injured reserve list, ending his season. Butler suffered a broken left shoulder blade, and now it's up to Jue to replace the 12-year veteran.

"I feel like I'll have no problem that I'll know everything by Thursday," said Jue, who replaced Butler during the second quarter of Sunday's game against Atlanta. "That was the most natural I felt the three weeks I've (been backing up Butler). I don't see any problem with me being ready to go.

"I'm not going to get much sleep the night before the game, because I'm going to be watching tape and everything else until game time. Putting that much work into it, I feel I'll have no problem being ready."

Packers' defensive coordinator Ed Donatell is comfortable with Jue, considering the circumstances. Not only has Donatell lost Butler, but he lost Butler's backup, Antuan Edwards, for the season earlier this year with a knee injury.

"He's been working the last couple weeks in a reserve role, and that pays off now, because now he's in," Donatell said. "He's a guy who has a lot of confidence and has a positive mindset. He has showed us he'll be ready."

Butler out, Jenkins in, Akins fined

Packers' safety LeRoy Butler will miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken left shoulder blade Sunday

News-Chronicle
The Green Bay Packers didn't waste any time in finding a replacement for the injured LeRoy Butler, as Monday they signed veteran safety Billy Jenkins.

Butler was placed on the injured reserve list Monday after suffering a broken left shoulder blade during Sunday's loss to Atlanta. Missing the rest of the season will end Butler's consecutive streak of starting regular-season games at 116 games.

"He's a' tough (man), but it's going to take some time to heal," Packers head coach Mike Sherman said about Butler's injury.

Packers' safety Darren Sharper said it's going to be strange when the defense takes the field Thursday against Detroit and Butler isn't alongside him. Rookie Bhawoh Jue is expected to start.

"It's a big loss," Sharper said. "On the field, it's kind of hard to fill the loss of LeRoy, and it's even harder off the field. A guy like that is in the locker room always trying to get guys ready."

As for Jenkins (5-foot-10, 205 pounds), he played last year and the first seven games this season with Denver before being waived Oct. 23. He worked out for the Packers the following week, when Butler suffered a chest injury, but hasn't been with a team since his release.

He also worked out for the expansion Houston Texans and Cleveland. The possibility of Jenkins playing Thursday is a question mark, but he is familiar with the defense, because it's the same system the Broncos use.

Jenkins, 27, arrived at the Packers' offices at about 5 p.m. Monday, so he won't practice with the Packers until today. Because of the Thursday game, he'll have just one practice before the game.

"I'm ready to go right now," said Jenkins, who played his first three seasons in St. Louis. "I have no idea (if I'll play). They haven't said anything to me about playing."

If Jenkins doesn't play, maybe safety Chris Akins will. He remained with the team after a sideline blowup with Sherman during Sunday's game with Atlanta. This followed him drawing a key unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which led to the eventual game-winning points for the Falcons.

Sherman said he wasn't sure if Akins would play Thursday, but did say Akins was fined an undisclosed amount.

It would seem either Jenkins or Akins would suit up, otherwise the Packers wouldn't have a safety to back up Jue.

Akins showed up for practice Monday, but Sherman told him to go back home, while he decided Akins' future in Green Bay.

Players supported Sherman's decision to not waive Akins, who apologized Monday to the team for his actions Sunday.

"I think it's a good call," Packers' defensive tackle Santana Dotson said. "Tempers flare, those things happen. The biggest thing is he's disappointed in himself."

"One thing we stated was whatever decision coach made, we were going to stick behind (him)," Sharper said. "Hopefully, he's learned from it."

James Stewart is a piece of crap. Hopefully he will play. This worthless stiff averaged 3.5 ypc last year, which was 30th in the league! Out of 38 players who got at least 6.25 attempts per game! He was ahead of only ...

Kevin Faulk
Ron Dayne
Thomas Jones
Terrell Fletcher
JR Redmond
Jermaine Fazande
Darnell Autry
Travis Prentice

I want 30 carries for James Stewart!
