This weekend in the Minneapolis Star Tribune Mike Tice said his starters will get their most playing time yet in the final exhibition game vs. Pittsburgh. He said they will definitely play into the third quarter.

In yesterday's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, it was reported that Pittsburgh's starters would play "one or two series" based on a quote by Bettis. The line was PIT -3 and the Vikes looked good at least for a 1st half play, but today Cowher was quoted as saying the Steelers will play their starters for most of the first half. His reasoning is that the Steelers have lost their opening regular season game each of the last two years and he felt his team was out of sync because they only played a series or two in the final preseason game.

What does this mean from our perspective? First of all, any first half advantage for Minny is now basically gone. A game advantage *might* be there if these reports are true because the Vikes should get at least one 3rd quarter series of starters vs. backups. Who knows if that is worth playing. What it does indicate is that the first half over could be a play here. It is clear that both coaches are treating the first half like a legitimate primer for the regular season. The nice part is that there is no earthly way either coach will play any kind of sophisticated defense which would allow the Bears or Patriots to pick up something for the week 1 games.

Clearly the line has been adjusted upwards somewhat, because a 40 total for the final preseason game is rediculous. In this case, however, we may still have an edge on a first half over bet at 20. I am going to continue to look at this game and check the local media reports but I wanted to get this info out early so you guys have a chance to look at it.

I was going to start a thread to ask a question, but here seems as good a place as any! (Hope you don't mind.)

You say...."a 40 total for the final preseason game is rediculous"

How much time do 'starters' generally get in the last pre-season game?
Do they play longer to get them 'in tune' for Week 1, or not as long to lessen the chance of injury?

The reason I ask is that there look to be a lot of totals that are higher than I anticipated

You have a definite point concerning the first half "over", as both teams want to get extra work out of their offense, and they won't overly prepare for their respective opponent on defense. Pittsburgh is still having problems coping with their new 3rd down dime package, especially now with LB Kendrell Bell out with a high ankle.

On Aug 25th Viking HC Mike Tice indicated that everyone could play into the second half against the Steelers, in part because the Vikings will have a nine-day layoff before opening the regular season Sept. 8 against Chicago. The next day, Steeler HC Bill Cowher said he has seen enough. He's hoping to end the tradition of losing season openers by ending the way he treats the final exhibition game. So, on Thursday night against Minnesota at Heinz Field, he will play his starters on offense and defense for nearly one half instead of the one or two series he has used them in the final preseason games since he became their coach in 1992. ( He doesn?t want to start the opening season coming off a final preseason loss; something that NEVER bothered him in the past.) Other players also backed Cowher's decision to play the starters more on Thursday. (proving that they support his decision). The length of time between their final exhibition game and their opener also played a part in Cowher's decision. They will go 11 days between games.
Once you couple this fact with the fact that the Steeler special teams (especially coverage squads) are struggling, and their second and third string defense has been very weak vs. the pass, Steeler kick retuners Randal El and Lee May have had great returns of late, and the second-string Viking QB lit-up the Steelers on this very same field in the regular season last year. All things considered, you have a good case for an over 40 on the game total as well. Just something else to ponder..........

I have only been following this for a few years, but generally the last preseason game is a brutally low scoring affair. Starters are out of there after 1 or 2 series and coaches run, run and run some more in hopes of getting the games over with as quickly as possible. Of course you have the odd game here or there where a coach actually tries to win but usually that occurs more in the first 3 preseason games.

Over the past several preseasons I have noticed a definite relation between offenses playing more and higher scoring. It goes back to what I wrote yesterday about coaches running vanilla defenses.

40 still just seems awfully high to me for this weekend. I would think the first half over might be better than the game over. If you want to go by history, though, under bets are what you should be looking for this week.

I logged on to the pittsburgh post gazette yesterday and The Steelers will definately play the starters for the first half. In today's paper, it mentioned that Charlie Batch will play the whole second half and Tommy Maddox will not play (even though he remains the second string qb). Cowher wants to see Kordell throw the ball as he has only thrown 12 times the entire pre-season. Bettis however thinks that they will be emphasizing the run sisnce their run offense in the pre-season has been terrible.

All I know is that the Steelers will play the "O" the whole first half.
