"Believe me, not only I, all the people of Iraq, not the people in the government, like Americans," Mohammed said. "They want to help the Americans, but they are all afraid."

Mohammed has given up the life he knew to help a woman he met only briefly. He and his family came to this Marine base with nothing but the clothes they were wearing and a blanket. But Mohammed smiled broadly and happily talked about his role. He expressed no doubts about his decision.

"She would not have lived," he said simply. "It was very important."

He knew the risks, he said. "I am afraid not for me. I am afraid about my daughter and my wife," he said, turning to them sitting quietly next to him. "Because I love much."

Mohammed wants to work with the Americans some more, maybe help them gather information elsewhere in Iraq. His wife could help treat injured soldiers, he offered. Maybe he will go to America. But eventually, he said, he wants to return home.

that IS truly a great story....BUT....i seriously have to question this statement....

"Believe me, not only I, all the people of Iraq, not the people in the government, like Americans," Mohammed said. "They want to help the Americans, but they are all afraid."

i mean....regardless of the reasons....if my girlfriend or a loved one were to get blown up by someone dropping a bomb....you can bet that there would be nothing that would prevent the hatred that i would then harbor against those responsible!!!

then again....maybe it's just me!!!

how bout if you were being FORCED to fight with a gun to your family's head if you didnt' for a regime who tortured, maimed, and terrrorized you; a regime who wasn't afraid to force out its own people to act as human shields; a regime who had a "special" republican guard that shot at and executed the "regular" republican guard if they returned from fighting the Americans; a regime who would bomb its own marketplace and kill civilian lives just so that they could blame it on the Americans; a regime that would use chemical warfare against its own citizens; a regime that built golden palaces and had a 2 class system that even the most devoted liberal couldn't even begin to compare to our own system while the people lived in utmost poverty; a country where one bad remark against the regime and off goes your head and after you watch your family raped and killed in front of you; a regime where the only thing it provides for you is constant fear to live under

and you heard of this other place called "America" where people are allowed to do what they want and where freedom reigns supreme; where a number of your own citizenry has escaped to and has been able to prosper and enjoy life as it should be; you hear anecdotes about this place and wonder if it truly is what you hear -- but at the same time your gov't tells you is "evil" -- but by now you have learned to distrust everything your gov't tells you because you are NOT as naive as many in this world would like to assume. And these people -- these Americans -- are willing to risk life and limb and go against world opinion to LIBERATE YOU. To free you from this guy. Thousands of troops are there smiling, laughing with the people. Playing soccer with the people. Giving candy to the children Certainly, these people can't be as *evil* as made out to be. Ahhhh, the picture becomes clearer and clearer to the INTELLIGENT Iraqi citizen who is now FREE to think as he chooses and doesn't have to cower in the corner of his living room in fear.

I find it perplexing why someone like yourself Cherry would find it hard to believe that this guy would love America. Is it possibly because you do not want to believe that anyone could love America? Is that what this all boils down to? I, myself believe that is what it is. It is a disease that has spread across the world and the only people who really do like us anymore are those who have experienced the repression of gov't such as Hussein's.

not at all....different strokes for different folks....*L*

BUT....don't you think people have VALID reasons for not liking the US and canada and the western ideals as well???

i mean....i feel confident in speaking for you and i in saying that we love the liberties we have and the respective countries we live in....BUT....is it out of the question that this also applies to those that choose to live a different way of life???

i myself find hussein's actions despicable....BUT....what price are we all willing to pay to get rid of him....AND....can anyone be sure beyond any reasonable doubt that we're going about it the right way???

once again....according to this dude....

"Believe me, not only I, all the people of Iraq, not the people in the government, like Americans," Mohammed said. "They want to help the Americans, but they are all afraid."

call me crazy....BUT....i somehow find it hard to believe that EVERY iraqi hates hussein....just as i find it hard to believe that EVERY iraqi likes americans and that they are all afraid!!!

perhaps if he would have said MOST or SEVERAL....then it would be more plausible!!!

the simple point i'm making is that we're immersed in all sorts of generalizations which i simply find ludicrous....i dunno....maybe it's all semantics and the way people choose to word their thoughts....being an english major and all....*L*

it just doesn't make ANY sense to lump EVERYONE into any category....that's all....and trust me....i try to view things from ALL perspectives....the points and illustrationcs that i make are from the alternative point of view....just to point out that there are ALWAYS alternatives and two sides to EVERY story....AND....not necessarily one being right over the other!!!

he probably is referring to the people who are not a part of the ruling class....the people who are subject to this terror....

i don't think that it takes a genius to figure that 100% of the peopel subject to this terror and living in fear would just as soon be able to go out of their house and enjoy a little freedom

one more thing....i guess the war could somehow be justified to me IF all the facts were divulged....regardless of how minute....and without any posturing....on all sides....BUT....i KNOW that it's simply wishful thinking on my part....

see....now THIS would have made somewhat more sense....as opposed to simply saying ALL of the people....*L*
