77 Sticks...
Sorry about taking so long to reply. I don't wager much in the summer and rarely check the message boards. Kickserv (another great tennis capper) gave some very good advice on where to start. Just a few things I would add.
1. I live in the States, so my choices are pretty limited as to what sports books I can wager with. If you can, sign up with multiple books so you can find that right price.
2. Try to stay away from heavy favorites (especially if the tournament is not a major) as the risk far exceeds the reward. My general rule of thumb is nothing higher than -300.
3. Another key is to watch tennis or pay close attention to the results. For years Jo Tsonga has been labeled as "somebody to watch" but injuries have derailed him. This year at Aussie Open he fulfilled that potential and made his backers alot of money. Mikhail Youzhny did the same for me at the US Open a couple years ago. You are not going to be able to play Federer, Nadal, Serena, Ivanovic, etc in the first week of most Slams, so being able to identify those fringe players that are about to make a move is key to building your bankroll. Most of my money is made in the first week as the lines get tighter when two top players are facing off.
4. Don't force a play. Just because there is an exciting semifinal between two great players does not mean you have to make the wager. Especially on the womens side, there are a handful of players you can just about pencil into the second week of each Slam. So you need to find those Aggie Radswankas or Alize Cornets. Not quite top-10 players who still will have the -200 or -150 odds most of the first week.
5. Finally, if you believe in a play and you see the whole board is against you or maybe a more experienced capper has made a big play on the opposite, don't second guess yourself. The beauty of tennis is you have a 50/50 shot at winning each time. You may be right and choose not to follow your gut. The hardest lesson to learn was to trust my own instincts. If you do your homework, you can make $$$.
Hope that helps!!!!
