Some notes...

1) Chiefs v Crusaders
Chiefs +9.5

Chiefs play the first-ever match at the new Waikato Stadium - a rebuilt version of the run-down Rugby Park; five minutes from the Anders household!!
How many pts that will be worth to the Chiefs is the big question. They made many bad errors in losing to the Waratahs in Rotorua first-up. There are doubts if they have the firepower in the front five and pace in the loose trio to compete with the best teams. Danny Lee and promising first-five and goalkicker David Hill replace Rhys Duggan and Glen Jackson from last weekend's starting XV while captain and No8 Deon Muir is in doubt after leaving the field last weekend with a hamstring strain.
Lock Chris Jack won't start for the Crusaders thru injury; Bradley Mika being his likely replacement. The Crusaders looked set for a comfortable win last weekend when leading Otago 24-10 at the break but were badly outplayed by a combative Highlanders in the 2nd half and just snuck home.

2) Highlanders v Sharks
Highlanders -9.5

The Highlanders are great in front of their own fans at the House of Pain and showed v the Crusaders they should be legitimate top 4 contenders under Laurie Mains. Their pack matched up very well v the all All Black eight of the Crusaders. Tony Brown should be fit after taking a big hit which forced him off the field late and probably cost them the SU win. The Sharks, like the Crusaders, lost their way at home in the 2nd half and were beaten SU by the Stormers. They now face a long haul away from home but did impress on the road last season.

3) Brumbies v Cats
Brumbies -16.5

ACT were the only home team to win ATS last week - and the only one I didn't back!! LMAO!! It was a real dog-fight v the Reds though - a late turnover end-to-end try got them the cover. They looked a little rusty but there were also ominous signs of the Brumbies-by-numbers style; their pack was strong and they have depth on the bench. The Cats aren't expected to feature this year but won away at the Bulls with centre sensation Bobo getting a hat-trick. They had to stave off a late Bulls comeback though and the score probably wasn't reflective of the match.

4) Reds v Blues
Pick 'em

Game of the rd for me. Are the Blues the genuine article? Sure looked it last Fri but how do you judge that v the rabble that was the Hurricanes? Rupeni Caucaunibuca may be out for a month with a leg injury but the Blues should adjust easily to his absence. If their impressive looking forward pack can get on top of the Reds than they could win again. But I was impressed with the Reds defence v the Brumbies.

5) Stormers v Waratahs
Pick 'em

The Stormers SU win at the Sharks was the shock result of rd one without doubt. They fought back hard but did ride their luck also while du Toit kicked poorly for the home team. The Waratahs will be a bit like the Blues this weekend - were they very good v the Chiefs away or recipients of some very poor play by their opponents? Still doubts over the Waratahs pack in my mind.

6) Bulls v Hurricanes
Pick 'em

Eek! Perennial losers the Bulls v the woeful 'canes. Even with Cullen, Umaga, Lomu and Alatini you couldn't back the 'canes after last Fri's debacle. No grunt up front, badly beaten to the loose ball; out-mauled all night, and a lack of attacking ideas. Seems like Riki Flutey may come in for David Holwell at first-five, not a fab of that move either. The Bulls nearly came back from the dead v the Cats and should have won in the 38th minute of normal time when they knocked on with the line open 10m out and near the posts when trailing 37-31.
Note: Cullen out for 'canes; Lomu to start with Lilley at fullback; Howell keeps his place.

Back later today with final take on Chiefs v Crusaders.

Hoping to avoid repeating last week's disaster but even if i continue to struggle I will still post all the relevant info here as it may help other punters make their own choices.

GL all :)

GL, Anders, may add a few thoughts soon.

where r you getting -16.5 on the ACT ? Best I can find is -17.5 and worst is -21.5

You can get +12.5 on the chiefs just trying to find where, saw it earlier in my travels and have lost it.. many of the uk books however have them at +12.

Can't believe the Canes are getting points vs the bulls (up to +3 in places), when they met in wellington last year the canes were a -20.5 fav ! what a turn around a year makes !

Game 1) Chiefs v Crusaders
Chiefs +10.5/+12

No play for me on this one. Crusaders have the class to win well but the intangible is how the Chiefs play on opening night of the new stadium. This new set-up replaces the ancient abomination that was Rugby Park and has been long awaited in my home town. I drove past this morning and from all indications that atmosphere there tonight will be electric. That may be enough to get the Chiefs into a contest - they know if they lose their second "home" match in the comp they will be gone after just 2 weeks. Still not enough for me to play them as home dogs v 13 All Blacks but enough for me to hold off backing the Crusaders - there are better bets this weekend.

hey guys, aussie here, first post here, nice crowd you have posting here
did any one else watch the canterbury/chiefs game??
was that the championship winning team of the crusaders playing out there?? didnt look like it !!
murtens boot was the only thing that kept them in the game, lucky try towards the end of the game off a mid field bomb for canterbury had me infront of the spread, but chiefs came back with a late try to spoil my fun, still, the chiefs should have won that game, played better football then the crusaders!! if hill had of landed a few more kicks the result may have been different !!
good luck guys for the rest of the week end, hope i can give some insite as well for us !!

Two Plays

Two Plays

Hi jotster; good to see u here

Game Two)

Otago Highlanders v Sharks
Otago -9.5/-12

Highlanders fought back strongly v the Crusaders in wk one and deserve to be favourites here given their home dominance SU. But I'm backing the Sharks to bounce back from their poor effort last weekend - the Chiefs proved last night (when they were unlucky not to snatch a draw in the dying seconds) how rapidly form can change.
It would be foolish to dismiss last year's finalist on one game also. They dominated the Stormers for 55/60 minutes and would have had the result - and possibly the spread - covered if Gaffie du Toit had fared better with the boot.
Now they embark on a testing away trip - Brumbies are next up in Canberra - but are the best traveled of the Sth African sides. They have stacks of experience - 10 Sprinboks in their starting XV with 224 caps between them - and I expect them to play well as a celebration for coach Rudolph Straeuli, who has just been appointed as the new Boks coach.
If du Toit kicks well - or maybe Justin Swart takes over with the boot - the visitors can compete here.

PLAY SHARKS +12 (2 units)

Game Three)

ACT Brumbies v Cats
Brumbies -16.5

The Brumbies were a little ring rusty last week but still covered when beating the Reds 29-19. This was a high-class encounter - not pretty rugby but intense, with some fantastic defence. The Brumbies showed signs of their all-conquering reign last year and should step up a notch today.
Pat Howard should be back at second-five after going off injured in rd one; if not sevens star Tim Atkinson will fit in well. The most pleasing aspect of the Brumbies' play last weekend was how their forwards had the upper hand over a big Reds' pack.
The Cats beat the Bulls on the road in a tight one - they established a sizeable lead only to almost lose it in the dying minutes before sealing victory in injury time with Rastafarian centre Gcobani Bobo the star with a hat-trick of tries.
He won't get things as easy v the vastly organised Brumbies defensive line. And the big Cats pack will really be struggling with the pace of the game in the final 20 minutes if the Brumbies dominate possession and territory as I expect. Cats are not a good side despite last weekend's win and the Brumbies should cover this number; even if they do leave it late.

PLAY BRUMBIES -16.5 (2 units)

Game Four) Queensland Reds v Auckland Blues
Pick 'em

Passing on this game. May again regret not backing the on-fire Blues for the second week in a row but I was impressed with what I saw in the Reds last weekend. They played with plenty of passion and some ability to push the defending champs hard. Rupeni Caucaunibuca is out for a month for the Blues, who have never won in Qld.

NO PLAY

Game Five) Stormers v Waratahs
Stormers -1.5/pick 'em

Tough one to call. Stormers showed plenty of spirit to come back and beat the highly fancied Sharks first up; considering their injury problems which got worse in that match by losing first-five Werner "Good" Greeff (Marius Goosen moves to first-five; Percy Montgomery to fullback; solid moves) while Tjoepie van den Heever comes off the bench to replace hooker Pieter Dixon who broke his arm.
Waratahs looked slick v the Chiefs but the Chiefs made a host of errors and still had an edge in possession and territory yet are not strong up front.

NO PLAY

Game Six) Bulls v Hurricanes
Bulls -2.5/pick 'em

URRGGGHHHHH!!!!

Hey, I finally got a winner!!! LMFAO!!

Wk 2: 1-1. Season to date: 1-6 (-7 units)

Well done Crookycmyru; great week; looks likes you will be a fine addition to the team; lots of good 'capping thoughts. I'm proud of what we've helped build up here in this forum as it makes Madjacksports the ultimate home for sports bettors

Some brief thoughts on week 2 games:

Chiefs v Crusaders: Crusaders v frustrating; 0-2 ATS so far; lucky to win both games. Have the talent but look rusty at start of season again. When they gel they will blow some teams away; when that is who can tell but are 2-0 SU which is all that concerns them. Chiefs were much better; played with desire in the way they hit rucks and mauls and got around the field. Beware though that they were again outmuscled up front and play a high-risk game with lots of turnovers as they know an open style is their only method of success.
*Whale _ which book did u say did totals again?

Highlanders v Sharks: God help the Boks with Straeuli as their coach after watching this one! Scored early and then were blown away. Had no flair or invention in the backs and u ain't going to beat good teams just bashing away and turning it back inside. Hate to say this but they really miss Butch James at first-five. Du Toit's kicking was bad again. Laurie really has the Highlanders humming though; very strong forward pack and capable backs with some flair players.

Brumbies v Cats: Kicking myself in not playing maximum units on this one _ a predictable rout. Cats are just awful; only positive I can say is that they didn't give up. Brumbies were wonderful; helped by ref Paul Honniss at almost every turn. Mortlock's kicking may be a concern in close games though.

Reds v Blues: Went to bed at halftime; shagged. Blues looked great in the first 15 mins and then got dominated. Reds seem to be a side playing on passion; still not sold on their coaching. Someone else _ turtle; cartman88?? _ may be able to add some thought.

Have yet to see the other 2 matches; will watch the tapes in the next few days.

Still - remarkably - looking 4ward to Wk 3 :p

RUGBY-SUPER-WARATAHS
GREY DAY FOR STORMERS AS WARATAHS SNATCH VICTORY
Cape Town, March 2 AFP - Wallaby centre Nathan Grey slotted a late drop goal to give the New South Wales Waratahs a 26-25 victory over the Western Stormers in a Super 12 second-round thriller at Newlands Stadium on Saturday.
Success maintained an impressive start to the annual southern hemisphere inter-provincial rugby union championship by the Australians, who defeated Waikato Chiefs by 17 points in New Zealand last weekend.
Losing at home was a bitter blow for the South Africans, who surprisingly overcame the Coastal Sharks in an all-South African first-round clash despite lacking numerous first-choice players.
Springbok stars like wing Breyton Paulse, centre Robbie Fleck and number eight Bob Skinstad were ruled out again by injury, but the home team seemed to have snatched victory when they scored a 76th-minute try.
Substitute centre Gus Theron dived over after a series of uncharacteristic defensive blunders by the Waratahs, but a failed conversion attempt by Marius Goosen was to prove costly.
Theron picked up a kick ahead and touched down near the corner after the Waratahs fumbled possession from a scrum and fullback Matt Rogers failed to find touch under pressure.
Trailing 25-23, the Waratahs moved into attack and threatened to cross the line several times before Grey added to his first-half try with a calm close-range drop goal.
Captain and centre Matt Burke, one of many Wallabies in the Waratahs line-up, compiled 15 points from a try, two conversions and two penalties before retiring injured during the second half.
A try and drop goal by Grey and a Rogers penalty completed the Australian total and they look set for another victory next weekend at bottom-of-the-table Northern Bulls in Pretoria.
Goosen kicked four penalties and a drop goal for the Stormers, but failed with four other place kicks. Theron and scrumhalf Bolla Conradie touched down for the South Africans.
The television judge awarded Conradie a try although he did not appear to ground the ball while the same process disallowed what seemed a legitimate touch down by Burke during the first half.

RUGBY-SUPER-HURRICANES
HURRICANES TOO GOOD FOR BULLS
Pretoria, March 2 Reuters - The Wellington Hurricanes beat the Bulls 37-18 in a Super 12 match on Saturday on a bleak day for South African rugby.
The Bulls, traditionally the under-performers in the competition having finished in the bottom two for the past four seasons, committed a host of dropped passes and missed tackles.
Other South African sides fared little better against their Australian and New Zealand opponents on Saturday.
New South Wales defeated the Stormers 26-25, ACT Brumbies thrashed the Cats 64-16, while the Otago Highlanders overwhelmed the Natal Sharks 45-5.
Hurricanes took the lead in the second minute with a penalty by Daryl Lilley and the early pressure of their expansive running game brought the first try in the 13th minute.
David Holwell made the initial break, gliding through a poor attempt by both Bulls lock Victor Matfield and flanker Piet Joubert to stop him before offloading to lock Dion Waller to score.
The Bulls registered their first points soon after with a penalty from flyhalf Boeta Wessels, but another penalty by Holwell reinstated the Hurricanes' 10 point lead.
The hosts worked hard for a try in the latter stages of the half and Jonah Lomu stopped a certain score when he tackled flanker Danie Rossouw just short of the line.
In contrast, the Bulls' tame tackling enabled the Hurricanes to stretch their lead to 20-3 following a try by fullback Christian Cullen.
Wessels responded with another penalty but the Hurricanes surged further ahead with a 10 point burst within the first eight minutes after the restart, including a try by Lilley and a conversion and penalty by Holwell.
The Bulls hinted at scoring a try in the second half and, ironically, played their best rugby when they had 14 men on the field.
The yellow carding of fullback Jaco van der Westhuyzen for a late tackle on Tana Umaga was followed by two Bulls tries from substitute centre Adrian Jacobs and scrumhalf Hakkies Husselman in the final 15 minutes.
But their indiscretions throughout the match left the Bulls with too much ground to make up, and Umaga's try in the 75th minute secured the bonus point and victory for the Hurricanes.
RUGBY-SUPER-BRUMBIES
BRUMBIES THRASH CATS 64-16 IN SUPER 12
Canberra, March 2 AAP - The ACT Brumbies have reinforced their Super 12 favoritism in commanding style, beating the Cats 64-16 at Canberra Stadium.
Despite playing below their best, the Super 12 champions ran in 10 tries to one to secure a bonus point and deliver a humiliating dose of reality to their South African opponents, who had left home on a high after downing the Bulls 44-31 last week.
Inside centre Pat Howard, blindside flanker Owen Finegan and his Wallaby openside teammate George Smith all crossed in the first half to hand ACT a 23-9 lead at halftime.
The hapless visitors were not aided by a host of errors, a lineout in disarray and a punishing infringement count from Kiwi referee Paul Honnis, which saw ACT dominate possession and unleash raid after raid.
The giant Cats forward were found wanting as the Brumbies switched from right to left in their trademark expansive style to run them ragged.
The second half opened as the first ended, with outside centre Stirling Mortlock capping 14 points off the boot with a five pointer when a pass from five-eighth Steve Larkham found him out wide after just two minutes.
Then Finegan crossed for his second in almost farcical circumstances, standing unmarked at the back of a Cats lineout and breaking through the visitors' defence for the easiest of tries.
Hooker Jeremy Paul, replacement centre Tim Atkinson, wing Mark Bartholomeusz and prop Bill Young joined in the carnage, with the Cats' only consolation coming from a try to centre Gcobani Bobo and 11 points from the boot of five-eighth Louis Koen.
Larkham, who showed a welcome return to form after finalising his contract through the week, also crossed the Cats line in a beautiful backline move which saw him handle twice.
The final humiliation for the Cats came with just seconds remaining when Springbok prop Willie Meyer was red carded by Honnis for his second sin-bin offence.

Whale,

I had no idea that SportsTAB had totals going on the Super 12 (even if it was only some games) so thanks for the info.

Despite their weak lines eg $1.85/$1.85 there is generally some nice value with totals so I will be having a look next week.

Interesting to see 3 from 3 went over in Round 2.
