Mad Jack?s Super Bowl Party
The Second Annual Mad Jack?s Super Bowl Party is in the books and I feel pretty confident in saying that everyone had a great weekend in Vegas. I had tons of fun meeting a few dozen folks from the site as well as gambling and drinking way too much all weekend.
Special thanks have to go out to Fletcher and Mad Jack for organizing the entire weekend and making sure everything ran smoothly. You guys would not believe how much work Fletcher put into arranging the party room and the hotel arrangements for all the folks that stayed or played at Sunset. In addition he was always around giving out free advice on his plays to anyone who wanted an opinion. The man was absolutely on fire all weekend on college hoops, too.
Friday night was really a lot of fun for me. Basically it was ?The Connection? (as Fletcher, Raymond and KCWolf will heretofore be known
), Mags and me sitting around the Sunset sportsbook gambling much of the evening. I had my girlfriend with me and Ray?s wife Tara showed, but KC?s wife and Fletcher?s couldn?t make it.
We all talked about what were were playing that night (I lost my play on the Nuggets, yeesh) and waited for the overnight lines to come up for Saturday. Then the real hijinx began as KC told us he like Oklahoma State and we helped convince him to post it on the message forum as the game of the year (they ended up losing by double digits as an eight point fave). It was all in good fun because we were chiding Raymond for posting so many game of the week/month/year plays and KC always stays low key with his posts.
After we got the overnight lines Ray, his wife Tara, KC, my girlfriend Chioma and I grabbed some dinner at the buffet. It was a fun dinner with lots of laughs about silly stuff that has happened in the forum and a few jokes about Ray?s spelling. After dinner we went back to the book to check out how bad the Nuggets were getting worked. We then went our separate ways and Chioma and I played a few tables before heading off to bed.
The next morning was an early one as the 9 a.m. starts for a lot of games had people meeting at the Sunset sportsbook as early as 8 a.m. I finally dragged my sorry ass out of bed and got down there by about 9:30. That morning I finally got to meet Jack and his dad, as well as barfly, Gatorbait, Kosar, nhl8810, njsf25g, BahamaMama, Senor Capper (who I met last May at Sunset), 1837 and Flipper13. I am probably forgetting someone and if I am I apologize.
I spent quite a bit of time talking to 1837 and he gave me a nice tip on betting World in the NHL All Star game. I also put down a homer parlay on USC and the Bucks. I played my only regular sized bet offshore with the Hawks. Talking with 1837 was also fun because my girlfriend speaks French so she got to chat with 1837 in French for a bit. Hopefully they were saying good things about me.
The highlight of the afternoon may have been Never Caught Up regailing kcwolf, fletcher and I with a wild story about his old days as a bookie. Man, what a story. NCU is a real personable fellow and if you ever get a chance to meet him in person, you will be entertained if he decides to share that story.
After drinking my fill of Bloody Marys in the morn with the guys, I went back to the room to rest up after losing some more at the tables (a theme that would continue throughout the trip). Then it was on to dinner at a very nice seafood place in Sunset with about 20 other people from the party. It was there that I met Juji Gatame and CrackRat. Juji was fun to talk to because he is really into fighting and Judo and I love mixed martial arts myself. Of course, he does it and I only watch it, so there is a huge difference. We all went on to dinner where 1837 showed off some nice skills in choosing tasting Chardonnay. The French (Canadiens) really know how to taste wine, I must say.
My girlfriend and I planned on heading up to the strip to roll some craps but I was so tired from being up so dang early that we never made it. We just stayed in the hotel and hung out drinking and gambling for a while before retiring.
I thought the Pacers were a solid play on Sunday so I woke up early to bet that loser. To my delight, when I hit the sportsbook at 8:45 Fletcher and KC were already down there. I also bet the Clips, who lost. I had Golden State earmarked as a late play but I chickened out after my first two lost. Oh well, they lost anyway.
After some more drinking and losing at tables, the Super Bowl party was starting. I volunteered to take pictures so once Jack gets pictures of the party posted, those will be my handiwork for the most part. At the party I met 4bubba, Hoops, ironlock and Bohica. I also finally met Nolan Dalla. Unfortunately I had to leave shortly after the Super Bowl so I didn?t get to sit down and visit with Nolan like I wanted to, but we got to talk for a few minutes and that was a lot of fun. Another key aspect of the Super Bowl party was meeting the brains behind KCWolf?s handicapping, his wife, Su.
Sadly, most of the room was on the Rams -14 with a lot of over bets, too. There was also a large contingent that hit the Rams -4 2nd quarter as well. At halftime it was funny because just about the entire room emptied to make halftime bets. I had New England +10 2nd half, and that got me back to even for Saturday and Sunday.
The game itself was incredible, even if the result didn?t put much money in Mac Jackers pocketbooks. After the party I said my goodbyes and got email addresses from a few people before making the long drive back home.
Overall it was just a great weekend all the way around. The really nice thing about the weekend is that basically all the guys who made it out there are positive contributors to the site and solid handicappers. They are all very personable, unselfish people and these are the type of people that make Mad Jack?s such a fun site. Hopefully even more of you can make it out next year. Not only is it a lo of fun, but I think talking handicapping wtih guys like fletcher, Raymond and kcwolf helpd me learn just that much more about being a successful handicapper.
Oh yeah, and for those of you that want to see a pic of Chioma, hopefully Jack will have at least one good one from the party. If not, I will try to get one to Jack to post on my place either in place of or alongside the one of Balls Mahoney and me.
