Belly of the Beast
When these two teams met last, it was a high-profile Sunday Night Matchup and New England had everything in their favor ? Home crowd in a night game, all the Rams speed limited on the grass. St. Louis won by 7 but did not cover.

The stats from the game don?t show the game being that close

-First Downs
St. Louis 26 New England 13

-Total Yards
St. Louis 482 New England 230

-Yards per Rush
St. Louis 3.1 New England 2.6

-Yards per Pass
St. Louis 9.2 New England 6.2

-5 Rams (4 defense) were injured in the game and did not return.

-New England returned a 52 yard interception return and another interception led to a field goal (albeit after the Pats moved the ball 40 yards).

The Rams come into this game off of a game playing against the as fast a defense as was in the playoffs. And while they didn?t cover, they only were forced to punt 3 times (once after they took a knee.) St. Louis was also forced out of their game because they had to rely on the run more than they would like due to that being the Eagles weakness. The Eagles were able to stop the run in the playoffs, but that was more due to the fact that Brad Johnson and Shane Matthews weren?t able to provide a deep threat and the Eagles were able to keep their defensive backs up tight. The Rams offense is so powerful that even a banged up Warner proved to be risky to blitz against that the Eagles only blitzed him 8 out of the 35 times that he went back to pass. The Eagles afraid to blitz?

The Patriots did beat the Steelers who had the best running game that I have seen since the Cowboys in the early 90s and they shut it down. But when you see Bettis taking pitches and trying to get outside and Amos Zeroue getting only 4 touches after he pounded the Ravens, you have to make the coaches accountable. Cowher panicked and abandoned the run without even trying it without Bettis. The Patriots got two special teams touchdowns and have now scored a total of two touchdowns in the playoffs with their offense. The balls rolling their way right now, but I don?t think that there?s a team in the league who would feel that they didn?t have a chance against the Patriots. Not only are they not the best team in the AFC, they may not be the best team in their division.

It seems redundant to say, but the Rams have too much speed, their 4 receiver sets will get them the matchups that they want and the Patriots have no one to cover Faulk out of the backfield. Knowing that the Rams will score a ton makes the 14 seem manageable, especially in a Super Bowl. It has always been a game where there is no letdown and a killer instinct is present in times where the game hangs in the balance. We?ve seen before when teams that win ugly, that slop up the game enough and then have the poise to win at the end, play a team that they are inferior too get behind and press. The results are ugly.

While I am very aware that I am on the public?s side here, it doesn?t bother me at all as the public owns the Super Bowl. Big teams play big and also-rans show their colors.

Concerns:
The Rams have had a cavalier attitude to turnovers in the past and if New England can get a turnover and hang with the Rams for a half, this game may go down to the wire. However, I see the Rams have changed their attitude with the benching of Az Hakim and Candidate on returns. Martz no longer is finding turnovers acceptable. In the playoff games, the Rams have turned the ball over 1 time. In their only two losses this season, they were a combined ?10 (13 ? 3) in the turnover battle. If the Rams don?t lose the turnover battle by more than 2, they will cover.

As bad as the Pats offense looked against Pittsburgh, they showed tremendous poise when the Steelers cut the deficit to 4. The Pats drove right down the field, when a lesser team would have imploded. That poise will be needed if the Rams get on top early.

I mentioned above that the Rams lost 5 players in the game with the Patriots before. Not all can be blamed on bad luck. While I think that the Rams have shown that their soft label doesn?t hold merit, a team gets a reputation for a reason. The Patriots may be able to hault the crossing patterns with a few heavy hits, but Warner doesn?t usually hang his receivers out to dry.

Great writeup

Great writeup

Thanks for the good post. Everything you said is right on, but I just don't know if it adds up to 14.

Question for you: Keeping in mind that ATL was a 13 point dog and INDY a 16 point dog late in the year at STL, if this were a regular season game at STL, what do you think the line would be?

If your answer is "14 or less",which I think it should be, then ask yourself: is the super bowl (neutral field) 14 because they know the public will be all over the rams, or is it 14 because of the Superbowl Blowout factor? In either case, I come down lightly on the Pats. I like the pats special teams, and the pats in the TO differential. Brady is accurate, the dbacks hit hard, and rams special teams have done some fumbling this year. If you get to Warner, he's thrown his share of picks, too.

I think +2 in TO's can help the pats win. +1 in TO's get's a cover. If they go negative in TO's, they're in big trouble.

Pats weren't bad on turf this year, though they didn't face much competition. They laid a whooping on the colts, and beat ATL at ATL. And beat buffalo at buffalo.

Why do you feel the Pats are not the best team in the AFC. They beat the Steelers with there back-up QB. They stopped Pittsburgh run and spanked their special teams. Not to mention having every call go against them.

It can't be the Raiders who are the best team in the AFC. They couldn't even muster one win in the last three weeks to guarentee a bye week. They like to cry about The Call but they had plenty of oppertunity to stop the Pats after the call and couldn't do it. In fact if they were so good they should of been blowing the Pats away at point of the game. Tired of their crying. They lost. It's over.

Not the best team in the East? You lost me there.

Maybe they only scored two TD's offensively but they score more than they give up.

In fact Rams have given up 31 TD's in regular season to Patriots 26.

Shrimp - When the Rams went to New England they were 8 point favorites, so if you subtract the 3 points for home field advantage, you would get to a spread of 11 points on a neutral field which I think is fair. However, I think that you would have to give the Rams the advantage in New Orleans due to playing surface and the fact many of their fans purchased the seats long ago, while the Pats fans are scrambling trying to get seats.

I think that the Super Bowl Blowout factor is the reason for the 14, but it isn?t something that has just happened in the past by coincidence. Once a team realizes there is no way that they can win, the letdown is fierce and the team shuts down while they are playing a team that is trying to put an explanation on the season.

Thunder- Everything in my post is my opinion except the stats. I think better AFC teams are the Steelers, Raiders, Ravens and Dolphins. I think the Pats have beat all but one but two of those teams are from the south that had to travel to the cold. The best team doesn?t always make it to the Super Bowl.

Between Green Bay and Iowa City
A BlueChip Report!! Information and insights in a crisp and persuasive presentation. A good read for the reader and, hopefully for us, a good read on the game.

I'm with you in thinking Mike Martz is riding a thoroughbred that will show its class in The Big Show. However, it appears I am a bit more nervous than you about what New England brings to the table.

And that Bains 3rd down quote is priceless, I don't care who said it.

the only thing i dont agree with is st louis is the public fav the line started at 15- and now is 14. i understand they are the public fav to win straightup but not against the spread.

i wont play a thing on the side in this game to many ifs. you saw what happened to bret favre a couple of weeks ago the guy is so confident in his ability he will make throws that he should not and the rams took advantage i can see warner doing the same thing sometimes he just thinks he can when he should not and the pats picked off a couple in the first game. if i were the pats i would play it close to the vest like baltimore did last year and dont turn the ball over. rams special teams is a little better but if the pats return team does what it can and should they should have good field position and maybe they get 3 field goals just for this reason. good luck

It?s not that I don?t fear the Patriots, as they have burned me a few times this year and I was most surprised last week, it?s just I don?t think that they will be able to play their style this week. You can?t comfortably play a ball control, field position game and Brady will have to take some chances and when pressed as he was in games against Denver and the first meeting against Miami, he looked pathetic. But he looked calm and cool against the Raiders, happy to settle for the eight yard gains that Oakland conceded to him when they were down 10. But playing the Rams is a different experience as he knows that they have to score and can?t settle for field goals. Glad to see that we?re on the same side, lostinamerica, and I look forward to more tidbits from you in your analysis later in the week.

Bean counter,
My initial opinion was that I was on the side of the public, but after listening to the crowd in the lunch room today, I?m not so sure (Sheesh!!!, 14 points, that?s a lot to give) And I couldn?t help but notice that Sportsinteraction was the only book that went to 13.5 as of Wednesday (it?s back to 14 now), and they market themselves most to casual players and will add an extra point or two to the favorite. I?ve never seen them take a position on a dog, so maybe the Rams aren?t the public?s side. It makes no difference to me, I?ve never been afraid to play the ?public trap? lines and certainly I don?t think that 14 could ever be considered a trap in the NFL. Thanks for the reply, I actually have to get back to counting some beans right now. I am THE wizard of the 10 key.
