This should be a great game. What MSU does well is run their half-court sets. That has been their only savior this year. Chris Hill is our solid 3-point shooter - he has icewater in his veins. Anderson will have to guard Carmelo, and he has issues with the dislocated pinky.

MSU is struggling at point guard right now, but they have been creative in solving some of the problem at times. Lorbeck and Davis can flash the high post against the 2-3 and score - Ballinger can hit threes too - but he has been snakebit this year. Torbert can slash against the zone and can elevate from 12 ft. in and score. BUT, they haven't really played a zone team this year. The one benefit that MSU has is that Izzo trained under Jud and the match-up 2-3 that he perfected. Another thing about MSU (as I am sure is true about Syracuse) is that they have been in a million close games this year (until Illinois, which was a fluke game). Neither team is likely to be phased by close games and can execute when needed. I imagine they will throw Anderson, Bograkos (bulldogish role player who plays decent D), and Torbert on Anthony. Much of this will depend on how the game is called. Aloyius Anagonye has always been one to quickly draw fouls because he is aggressive and physical (even in the Big Ten he racks up fouls). So if they call a close game, Syracuse could be greatly advantaged. Anyway, enjoy the game - Go MSU. Come to East Lansing someday - it is a great place.

Personally, I like unranked favs over ranked opp's, but 3-??? I would think this game would be a pk or Mich St -1. 3- is alot in what could be a very close game. I can't pk my nose, so don't listen to me, but Cuse has won 18 games. It's a no play for me at this point unless I hear some compelling evidence otherwise.

More thoughts from another MSU fan

Not sure how people think this, but it may not be bad having Syracuse coming to town. Thank God we have had 5 days to prepare for it and that Izzo coached under Jud - who mastered the 2-3 zone. Grinz, do you see the MSU heritage helping here? Has the practice prep been significantly different?

One thing facing the 2-3 might do will be hopefully to free up Hill from ballhandling and allow quick reversals of the ball for him to see some threes. People wonder why he hasn't been performing as well lately. Every team knows the offense starts with him (so they pick him up way out and force a lot of work to get the offense started) - and then he is either running the weave, or on other half-court sets he does a great (but tiring and often not given enough recognition for) job of setting up his man to be picked. That demands a lot physically and mentally. The 2-3 is definately a challenge, but at least Hill will have some freedom for ONCE to play his more natural position. Also, Davis and Lorbeck can flash the high post for quick shots.
