How come no one mentions a tariff. Back in the 80's when the country was doing ok we had a tariff. A tax on goods coming into the country. I am convinced that other than getting Americans to work for third world wages the only way we can get the corporatins to start manufacturing things in the US is to make it too expensive for them to make it in another country.
Sure the $200 computer will be $500 but at least it will be made in the United States and people will have jobs.
Just a thought:popcorn2

Bill in the Senate to impose tariffs on Chinese goods passed yesterday. Moves to the House.

If it passes will intensify the currency war already in progress and start a trade war.

And , we already owe China trillions and they continue to buy our debt. Who has more leverage in this situation? We buy their goods and they hold our debt? I'm not really sure who wins in this deal or if everyone turns out a loser.

The Chinese have a tiger by the tail, don't they?

Dare they do anything which might devalue the dollar?

Do they have anywhere to put all that money other than US bonds?

Speaking if Chinese goods, here's a fact which I just learned: We import about $400 billion of Chinese goods. Our GDP is about $15 trillion. So about 2.6% of our GDP is spent on Chinese goods. I would have guessed higher.

We import just about the same amount, $400 billion, from Canada.

So why don't we bitch about Canadian imports?

And then there's this - Japan holds just about as much of our debt as does China. Why don't we worry about that?

Are we Chinaphobic?

1. Japan has no army.

2. Japan has no army.

They dump our treasuries, we pull our troops and China can walk into Toyko with their dicks in their hands.

I'm not sure we've said that to the Japs, but I like the way you think.

What can you come up with to intimidate the Chinese?

I am talking about a tariff on everything coming in. A heavy tariff. This will force our corporations to stay home when they create jobs.

We used to do that and it worked pretty well. However, corporations can make greater profits if they can benefit from cheap labor, and corporations own almost all of our politicians, Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich excepted, and I'm not even sure about those two.

Oil and other resources must be the x-factor regarding Canada/China. I bet China's % of imported *manufactured* goods is massive. ...And that is the kind of import that strikes a nerve with so many because it's a result PURELY of low wages.

Yes, we're China-phobes (just as we were Japa-phobes 20 years ago).

Canada is our 51st state and everyone knows it, particularly the Canucks. Commonwealth, indeed.
