I will be driving to Greensboro NC from Dallas next week. We will be going thru Tenn on Saturday and are taking it as slow as we can, we want to have fun driving and aren't in any rush. Can anyone tell us some things we can do that are fun for families. I believe we're going thru Memphis to Nashville and the Knoxville I believe. We will probably stay the night in Memphis(fyi I don't care to see any Elivs stuff) and then head to Nashville, I was hoping to stop there and spend a few hours if we can find something to do.

Alert: There may be things that fall under the redneck category in this thread. :)

Nashville:
Children's Science Museum
Nashville Zoo
Parthenon in Cenetennial Park
Also in Centennial Park, they have a fighter jet and large locomotive that the kids can see. My son loves those.

Knoxville area:
Dollywood (I warned you!)
Tennesse History - first governor was General John Sevier. Sevierville is very close to Dollywood/Knoxville. Sevier is my wife's 5-great grandfather. (just a sidenote)

Memphis:
The whole Beale St. area is fantastic for adults and kids. It's been completely renovated and would be a good place to spend some family time for a day.
Also, people usually talk about Mud Island being a good place to go, but it has never interested me too much.
And, of course, go at the scheduled time to the Peabody Hotel to see the ducks take the elevator.

And you could also stop by Neyland to root for Arkansas on Nov. 10 to help us take the lead in the SEC East. ;)

Enjoy the trip.

Memphis and Nashville both have zoos but if it fits into your driving plans, I would try to spend the day in the Smokey Mountains {if you can get a room}. This the best time of year and you got Dollywood {theme park in Pigeon Forge} and Gatlinburg, both set up for family things. The mountains are beautiful this time of year and we just had our first freezes of the year this week. The tram ride up Ober Gatlinburg is awesome and there is a ski resort at the top.

Here are a couple of links:

Memphis and Nashville are more set up toward adults, don't know how old your kids are but A LOT more to do in the mountains and from living in Dallas, you don't have any out there:mj07:

Can give you some more ideas if you want to stay here like museums and tours but those are my best suggestions.

Be careful, Dollywood is closed Monday and Tuesday next week. Not sure of your driving plans. Hate for you to drive all the way up there to be disappointed. There's plenty of other stuff to do in Pigeon Forge though.

How old are the kids? I recommend the Nascar Speed Park. Go-carts everywhere!

Plenty of hotels on I-40 here in Knoxville, especially the Cedar Bluff area. Your 1 hour to Pigeon Forge and another 20 mins to Gatlinburg if you want to go up there. Should be nice and chilly up there.

Dollywood's link...

Have fun!

Kids are 5 and 4 so we are pretty limited on what we can do. I do know on Sat that Tenn is playing Vandy and I don't want to get stuck anywhere around Knoxville with all of those fans coming in and out of the game.

There is also a huge mall over near the Opryland Hotel called OpryMills.... Plenty to do there if you're into that kind of thing.... (Personally, i hate malls....) :com:

And there is a Dave & Busters in there along with an IMAX theatre and a cool restaurant for kids with an aquarium. The Childrens Science Museum is right off the interstate, half mile east of downtown.

I would still vote for Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg if it is your first time over here, it is more set up for touristy kind of things.
