Pudge: There's no problem

07/30/2001

By Gerry Fraley / The Dallas Morning News

ARLINGTON ? Ivan Rodriguez rejoined the Rangers on Sunday and insisted all is well with the club in general and teammate Chad Curtis in particular.

Rodriguez left Saturday's game at The Ballpark in Arlington after five innings to attend to a family problem at his home in Colleyville. A comment by Curtis sparked a loud argument that did not turn physical.

"It's a clubhouse thing, and it needs to stay that way," Rodriguez said. "I had to go home and take care of something. Everything is fine now. I don't have any problems with [Curtis]. I don't have any problems with anybody."

Manager Jerry Narron did not fine either player but did meet with them separately before the game against Tampa Bay. Narron likened the dispute to a family spat.

"If you have a brother or a sister, do you get along all the time?" Narron asked. "They said it's over."

Curtis concurred.

"People might try to blow it up to be more than it was, but it was really nothing," Curtis said.

Lack of hotel space forced the Rangers into unusual travel arrangements for Monday's makeup game at Baltimore.
In ordinary circumstances, the club would have taken a charter flight to Baltimore on Sunday night. The game was set last Monday, too late to find the 50 required rooms in a city where hotel space is at a premium in the summer.

As a result, the Rangers will depart Monday morning, arrive at Camden Yards at about 3 p.m. and loiter in the clubhouse for about five hours until game time. After the game, the Rangers will take a flight to New York for Tuesday's series opener against the Yankees.

"It'll be different," Randy Velarde said. "But they won't have any advantage because of what they have to do."

Because Anaheim refused to move up the starting time of Sunday's game against Baltimore, the Orioles were scheduled to arrive home at about 7 a.m. Monday.

A major league scout offered this evaluation of right-hander Aaron Myette's six-inning performance on Saturday: "Best I've seen him throw, but he still left a lot of balls up. He did look better."
