RANGERS STARTER AARON MYETTE (0-1): Myette makes his first major league start since May 23, when he allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings during a no-decision against Tampa Bay. Myette pitched six scoreless innings Monday for Double-A Tulsa in a tuneup start against Midland of the Oakland organization. He has not pitched more than two innings in a major league game since May 30. Myette must avoid a tendency to have his pitches drift high and over the middle of the plate.
ABOUT THE RANGERS: The American League's hottest hitter in July? Mike Lamb. A three-hit performance in Friday night's victory against Tampa Bay put him at a league-high .400 for 75 at-bats during the month.
TAMPA BAY STARTER NICK BIERBRODT (0-0): Bierbrodt, a left-hander, joined the Devil Rays this week in a trade from Arizona. He was the original Diamondback, taken in the first round of the 1996 amateur draft. Bierbrodt has a low-90 mph fastball and good curveball, but injuries and poor control have hampered his progress. He allowed 12 walks in 23 innings with Arizona this season. This will be his first career appearance against the Rangers.
ABOUT THE DEVIL RAYS: After an ill-fated try with aging free agents, Tampa Bay reverses field and goes young. The Devil Rays began this series with nine rookies and the American League's youngest team overall with an average age of 27.3 years.
