TEXAS TECH/NEW MEXICO Under 56 (Friday) - Texas Tech quarterback Kliff Kinsbury was considered a Heisman Trophy candidate before this year started, and he is indeed passing for an impressive 312.5 yards per game. However, the Red Raiders offensive production drops severely on the road, particularly when they play on grass. While they are averaging 33.8 points overall this season, they are only averaging 22.5 points per game in their 2 road games. Granted, they opened their season at a tough venue in Ohio State, but there was no excuse for their lethargic 24-14 victory at SMU, which also plays on grass. They are only averaging 72.5 rushing yards per game on the road, and as fine a quarterback as Kingsbury is, the Tech passing game becomes much easier to defend without the threat of a running game. The fact that his 344.0 passing yards per game on the road has only translated into 22.5 points suggests that the Raiders bog down in the red zone without a go-to guy in the backfield. Still, Kinsbury is always a threat, and New Mexico will attempt to keep the Texas Tech offense on the sidelines as much as possible by trying to run the ball. I think that they will have success with this tactic, given that they are averaging 159.2 rushing yards per game on 4.5 yards per carry, while the Red Raiders defense is allowing a whopping 199.8 rushing yards per game. I look for the Lobos to be successful in sustaining some nice, time-consuming drives, which is always good for the Under.
