Texas Tech +6

A short write-up for today?s game. We went with the offensive youth yesterday with Fresno St. but today we will be switching and going with the more experienced offense in Texas Tech. Can Ohio St. score enough with a whole new offensive backfield? Can they slow down the high-powered Raider offense? Can Tech find a running game to replace Ricky Williams?

Ohio St. brings back a very solid defense to try and stop Heisman hopeful Kliff Kingsbury. A very accurate passer (69% last year), Kingsbury has a great group of returning receivers to throw to and should benefit from a good returning offensive line as well. The Buckeyes will be starting 2 new corners from their defense that led the Big Ten in pass efficiency last year. Kingsbury is experienced enough and has the right tools to be successful in this game. The biggest concern is the running game; the Raiders need someone to step up and get some good touches. They only averaged 82 ypg last year, but Williams caught 92 passes last year out of the backfield, tough numbers to replace. As long as the line can hold firm, Kingsbury will get his chances.

On the other side, Ohio St. will be starting a new quarterback in Craig Krenzel and 2 freshmen behind him. Heralded TB Maurice Clarett will be the first true freshman to ever start in his first game at Ohio St. They will be facing a defense that returns 9 starters and one that improved throughout 2001. The Buckeyes will be without WR Chris Vance, who is suspended for the first 2 games this year. Losing a weapon like Vance certainly doesn?t help this team that should have trouble putting points on the board anyway.

Basically, both defenses have the capabilities to control this game. The feeling here is that Tech won?t be breaking any records offensively, but will produce enough to keep this one close. We just don?t see Ohio St. putting up a lot of points. The Buckeyes are ranked 12th and 13th in the major polls, a lofty ranking with an unproven offense. Look for a low scoring game where Tech can hang around and pull off the upset. The under looks good, but liking Tech and the points better.

Does anyone have a weather update on Columbus today and I haven't heard anything about Ohio St's Special teams.

I know Treece (K) was perfect on extra points last year and was something like 15 of 20 in the FG dept for Tech. The problem is he doesn't have much of a leg. Clinton Greathouse the punter will attempt anything from probably 47+ Not as accurate as Treece, but not as close, they both converted on FG's last year at the Alamo Bowl so they know what it's like to be on the field. (Maybe not with 100K screaming Buckeye fans)

The kicking game has not received much coverage here in the Mad J's forums, but looking at the first couple of games, the Kicking game has played a very important factor.

The feeling in Lubbock this week is that Ohio St is doing everything possible to even up the odds with Tech. Tech comes in healthy and excited about their 13 game season.

I am 30 minutes from the stadium. Weather should be excellent. Currently upper 70's with partly cloudy skies.
Kicking game should be improved. Nugent has been ok in practice, but still has to prove himself in game conditions. Groom will be one of the best punters in the conference, maybe the country.
OSU has the deepest collection of skill players they have had in years. The loss of Vance will not be a factor. Look for Gamble, Childress, Hall to pick up the slack at receiver. The fullback position is questionable at best with redshirt freshman Schnittker getting the start.Should be close contest with OSU winning but not covering the 6 points.

Appreciate the info raiphins. Helluva defense y'all got up there. Field position will be a big key today and least turnovers may = win. Hard to see either of the 2 offenses scoring much.

Keep an eye on Wes Welker (Tech punt returner) ~5'3" ~121 LBS Well I didn't have his bio on me but when you see him the numbers above look accurate. Quick on the giddyup, and is not afraid to run north/south. Had 4 punt returns for TD's last year although 2 were called back because of Roughing the kicker and offsides v. Nebraska. Could be a game breaker today.

Also - Ivory Mccann has never met a kickoff that he wouldn't return. The dice portion of the Tech game lies here. Mccann took one 108 (100 officially) to the house last year which fired up Tech. He also took one 16 yards (8 officially) that put Kliff with his heels on the endzone. He makes you love him or hate him evertime he touches the ball, but always tries to make something happen.

I respectfully hope your wrong about the outcome, but wish you luck and success today and this season. This is what makes MadJack's the greatest, having a backdoor weather report a stones throw away from the stadium.
