I guess no one else had NORWAY yesterday, in that thrilling cross country relay where they edged out the Italians.

1837, I want to thank you for that pick -- I had that as a win, shared it with two associates, and we all cleaned up (nice adrenalin rush, too).

You have become legenday for your ability to pick these obscure events. I look forward to learning more from you and reading your great posts to this board.

Best,

Had they not taken it off the board so early, I would have been on Norway as well. Nice call, hell of a race and sprint to the finish line. I'd never even heard of this event before this year, but that was some exciting shit.

Don't thank me Nolan, that one was a real lucky one ! I was surprise by the italians there even thought they have been tough on Norway on that event. A win by 0.03 sec is a win but a hell of a lucky one!;) Let's hope to finish win a win with the canadian men speed skating relay at 5/2! That would be a great ending for me $$$:D I guess we will have fun too this summer with the Soccer world cup! watch out for Italy and Argentina!

1837 - Really looking forward to the World Cup.

Will come at an ideal 'capping time for me too, as I'll be coat-tailing only on MLB

I believe the best value bets in the tournament will come in the "under/over 2.5 goals" category - and on the dogs of course ;)

As Antonio would say : Forza Azzurri

Speaking of the World Cup, why don't we do a MJS pool?

We could get 10, maybe 12 people -- each take teams, order determined by random method (but since there are no standouts -- 10-12 people could divide the top 11 seeds, then give the 12th seed the FIELD.

Any interest in doing a pool, where we kick in $100 each and play either winner take all -- or a $700 -- $400 split for first and second? Remember, it would have t be random picks, where we draw draft lottery balls to pick teams. Like I said, even if you draw the 12th ball, you tsill get a "live" team.

Questions:

How much do we want in the pool?
How are winnings to be paid out (1st , 2nd etc)?
How many players do we want (max?)
I'll book this with no vig (checks to be sent), or I can delegate someone if the group wishes.

Let me know what everyone thinks.

1837:

It doesn't matter who you like, and if everyone knows you back a certain eam.

The idea is, someone collects X checks. Then, we have a draft. The draft ordered is determined by lottery.

I'll gladly run this, providing we get interest from at least 10+

PS -- I like Brasil to win (going out on a limb, huh)

Can I select the draft order?? I can go first if you like :p
Sounds fun.
I love international soccer. the mexican leagues and world cup stuff.

If you guys want, I will take Argentina (if they can afford to finance their team to Japan/Korea by then)

No Flipper, it don't work that way. :)

Idea is this:

(1) We get ten people inerested in the World Cup.

(2) All ten must put up $100 in advance (figure is negotiable, but $100 sounds like fun money, and a decent cash win to the winner)

(3) We make this a lottery based on a random numerical order. Like this: (HYPOTHETICAL)
0. Nolan
1. Flipper
2. 1837
3 Jack
4. etc.

Note, this is NOT the draft order.

Then, since we are each assigned a number, we arbitrarily choose an event and have the numbers determined at random.

EXAMPLE:

LAST DIGIT OF NBA TEAMS SCORE ON (INSERT DATE) BY ORDER IN LINESHEET:

So, you then get numbers at random (every number has equal chance, since last digit of an NBA final team score in any game can range from 0-9. Also, everyone can see the numbers come up, no matter where you are in the world.)

Then, we have the draft order and we do this by Message Forum posting, until the ten teams are all gone. We can "couple" teams if we like, such as combining some teams to make them more attractive. For instance, Paraguay, Poland, and Turkiye are each about 40 or 50-1, but combined they would be more like 15-1 (not as good as the favorites, but that's the breaks for getting a bad draft order)

How about this: The Ten "Draftees"

FRANCE
BRASIL
ARGENTINA
SPAIN
ITALY
GERMANY
PORTUGAL and RUSSIA
ENGLAND an IRELAND
PARAGUAY and POLAND and TURKIYE
FIELD (18 remaining nations -- all listed at 60-1 or higher)

Note: Keep in mind that France came out of nowhere last time to win.
