My downstairs unit stopped running Friday so I called my A/C company out. It was 2 lbs. low on freon which says leak. He tells me he could do the leak test for $101.00 or save me the money and tell me that its probably in the evaporator coils. Apparently leakage in the coils is common in Amana units. Then he tells me I would have to have my system replaced because the type freon in the house uses R22 and EPA says you have to use the new "Puron." My question is why cant the leak in the coils be repaired? My home is less than 7 years old. I will call them back later to answer this and possibly schedule a free estimate to replace my equipment but I know some of you are in the biz and wanted your opinion. I understand nuclear fusion, frying turkeys and even the infield fly rule but HVAC slays me. :sadwave:

I am/have. Just wanted an opinion that wasn't tied to possibly selling me a new unit.

don`t they charge just for coming out to take a look?....this way you can`t afford to get too many opinions...

but,obviously,time is money...

g.l....i hope you don`t get hosed...

Leaks in the coils or joints of A/C's as well as fridges and Freezers can be easily soldered/brazed in about 5 seconds if they know what they are doing and like Lawtchan said about having a sniffer or detector to find where the leak's at. Problem is, it's easier for the repairman to say you need a new one and they especially do this if it's still under warranty from the manufacturer and it's not the specific manufacturer's service or repair guy. They would rather scrap the whole thing out instead of doing a cheap repair job. Seen and heard this hundreds of times from the service people where I work which is a fridge/freezer manufacturer

He is right about the freon. They did change the type of freon they use in AC units.
