6. 'The Departed' (2006)

Scorsese's Boston crime drama, a sometimes shot-for-shot remake of the Hong Kong thriller "Infernal Affairs," isn't his most original movie, and he lets Jack Nicholson (as a Whitey Bulger-like mob boss) ham it up way too much. Still, the tale of dueling moles working undercover among both the syndicate and the police force is a crackling work of suspense. DiCaprio does some of his best work as the increasingly paranoid and desperate detective among the thugs, though fellow cop Mark Wahlberg almost steals the movie from him as the only performer in the cast who has mastered the "Bahston" accent. (Sorry, Matt Damon.) The movie finally won Scorsese Best Director and Best Picture Oscars, and while he should have won both prizes long before, he certainly deserved them this time.
