The BCS Favorites

By SPORTSBETTING.COM

The Ohio State Buckeyes were the toast of the college football world last year. They had a Heisman trophy winning QB in Troy Smith; they were the No. 1 from wire-to-wire and earned a berth against the Florida Gators in the BCS title game, where they were torched 41-14.

Going into this season talented players such as Smith and WR Ted Ginn Jr. moved on to the NFL and many thought head coach Jim Tressel would be building for the future in 2007?they were ranked No. 11 in the AP preseason poll.

And if the season had progressed as most college football seasons go, Ohio State would probably sitting around No. 5 at best, but of course the NCAA football script isn?t going according to plan and it has nothing to do with a writers strike.

The season is fast drawing to a close and teams are fighting to be part of the BCS picture. Now is a great time to put up a wager at SPORTSBETTING.COM on college football?s national champion.

Let?s take a look at the top teams in contention, their current BCS odds and what?s on tap for them this weekend.

- Like last year at this time, the Ohio State Buckeyes see themselves the No. 1 team atop the BCS standings, listed at +150 to do what they couldn?t get done last year.

Of course, Coach Tressel, RB Chris ?Beanie? Wells and the rest of the Buckeyes could see their odds plummet if they fail to defeat the Illinois Fighting Illini this week.

Sitting at 7-3, Illinois would love to drive a stake through Big Ten rival Ohio State?s BCS title aspirations.

OSU is listed as a 15-point favorite, but before you decide to bet on the fave consider this: last year Illinois was a 24?-point underdog against the Buckeyes and covered by virtue of a 17-10 Ohio State victory.

That result doesn?t seem to be on the mind of the betting public, as 80% of bettors are putting green on Ohio State red in this one.

- After a seemingly devastating 43-37 loss at the hands of Andre Woodson and the Kentucky Wildcats, where Louisiana State failed to cover as a 10-point favorite, the Tigers find themselves back in the BCS picture, ranked No. 2.

Some experts think that LSU is making it harder than it has to be and as Doug Lesmerises of the Cleveland Plain Dealer asks, ?Is LSU gutsy or self-sabotaging??

SPORTSBETTING.COM has the LSU Tigers listed at +180 to win this year?s BCS title.
In the more immediate future, LSU is prepping to face Louisiana Tech and the BCS? No. 2 team is a heavy favorite with linesmakers pegging the Tigers as a massive 36?-point favorite.

After losing five in a row against the number earlier in the season, LSU coach Les Miles and his team have recovered nicely posting a four game ATS winning streak going into the game against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

Bettors think the Tigers will up their ATS streak to five as LSU is seeing action at a 90% clip.

- Oklahoma?s last trip to a bowl game saw them on the losing end of a classic OT shootout against Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.

This year the Sooners hope to be once again playing in a bowl game, but this time they hope it?s in Louisiana for the national title.

Currently, the BCS? fifth ranked team with an 8-1 overall record, SPORTSBETTING.COM has the Oklahoma Sooners listed at +700 to win the championship game this year.

But in order for that to happen, the Sooners will have to win out the rest of their games and hope that teams ahead of them lose.

Next up for head coach Bob Stoops? boys is a date against Baylor and they are pegged as a steep favorite at -38.

Oklahoma doesn?t have great betting stats as their ATS record is 5-4 and the Sooners are 1-4 against the number in their last five games.

Baylor isn?t better however at 3-6 ATS and have lost five out of its last six against the number.

Oklahoma is seeing 85% of the action so far in this one.

- If you were to trace back to when all the turbulence atop the BCS standings began, it might go back to late-September when the West Virginia Mountaineers lost to the South Florida Bulls 21-13 failing to cover the -7.

The loss knocked QB Pat White and WVU all the way down from 5 to 13 in the AP poll but West Virginia has clawed their way back up the, no pun intended, mountain and currently stands sixth in the AP and seventh in the BCS and SPORTSBETTING.COM has the Mountaineers listed at +1500 to win the national title.

WVU faces another team who tumbled in the standings, Louisville. The Cardinals are listed as 16?-point underdogs in this Thursday night tilt, but bettors aren?t seeing value on the dog, as they are receiving 30% of the action while West Virginia is seeing 70%.

- The other top favorite, Oregon, has a bye week before playing at Arizona on Thursday night (November 15th). They certainly look poised to be in the mix when the season finishes up.

We?ll check back next week with a quick update on how the top BCS teams fared and whether the odds for the national championship have changed.

Have a great week.
