The Fab Five
By SPORTSBETTING.COM
Both the pollsters and the betting public have designated their top five teams this week. All five of the nations top college football teams are in action this weekend, with each of them tagged as heavy favorites. Having to lay the big numbers hasn?t discouraged the betting public, as the Fab Five are attracting the most attention on the board at SPORTSBETTING.COM.
Let?s have a closer look at their matchups.
Friday, September 21: No. 4 Oklahoma at Tulsa
The #4 Oklahoma Sooners are the first of the top 5 to kick-off this week, taking a short trip to Skelly Stadium in Tulsa to take on the Golden Hurricane.
Listed as a 23-point favorite, bettors are expecting a rout in this one, as the Sooners are seeing 90 percent of the action. Barring a complete catastrophe, they should win this game, but covering more than three TDs is a lot to ask. However, this Sooner team has outscored opponents 184-62 so far.
This game isn?t a likely candidate to upset their lofty ranking, but looking ahead, one game does loom as a potential obstacle. The Sooners? hardest test of the season comes on October 6 against the Texas Longhorns who are currently ranked # 7 by the AP.
You can bet on that game today if you?re so inclined, as it is one of Games of the Year listed at SPORTSBETTING.COM. Oklahoma is listed as 8?-point favorites in the annual Red River Shootout.
Saturday, September 22: East Carolina at No. 5 West Virginia
The 1-2 East Carolina Pirates face Heisman hopefuls, RB Steve Slaton, QB Pat White and their West Virginia Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers are still seeing a majority of the action but not as much as the other Top 5 teams and that might have something to do with East Carolina?s rush defense, which allows 86 yards a game?WVU is currently receiving just over 70% of the betting volume in this tilt.
The Mountaineers will be tested next week against USF, but the real trial comes on October 27 when they take on the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers (currently No. 11 in the AP).
The oddsmakers also see a hard fought game coming in that contest, as they have the Mountaineers listed as a slight 1-point favorite on the Game of the Year menu.
Saturday, September 22: No. 3 Florida at Mississippi
The defending champion Florida Gators are really on a roll, most recently disposing of No. 22 Tennessee in a game where Florida racked up 544 yards of total offense.
This week the Gators look to have less of a challenge as they take on another SEC rival in the Ole Miss Rebels.
Last week?s rout appears to have had a lasting impression on the betting public, as the Gators, as a 23.5-point favorite, are receiving 85% of the early volume wagered on this matchup.
Playing in the SEC is never an easy thing as Florida must keep their attention on the Mississippi game this week and not look ahead to the Auburn game next week and the game against No. 2 LSU on October 6.
In that obvious Game of the Year against the LSU Tigers, SPORTSBETTING.COM lists the Gators as 7?-point underdogs.
Saturday, September 22: No. 12 South Carolina at No. 2 LSU
Speaking of the LSU Tigers, they will have to be focused this weekend against the Gamecocks if they hope to cover as South Carolina has an identical 3-0 record.
The Gamecocks? defense allows an average of 9.7 points a game while the Tigers? ?D? allows a meager 2.3, so this could be a real defensive battle.
Bettors aren?t expecting a close game though, as 90 percent of punters are backing the Tigers.
The Tigers face Tulane the following week and after that have a showdown with the Florida Gators (see above). They are favored by 7? in that Game of the Year.
Saturday, September 22, 2007: Washington St. at No. 1 USC
Heisman candidate QB John David Booty and the USC Trojans are the class of NCAA football and they showed why, recovering from a less-than stellar first half to take down then No. 14 Nebraska Cornhuskers last week.
This week they face a fellow Pac-10 team in the Washington State Cougars and most bettors feel comfortable they?ll roll again this Saturday, as the Trojans are seeing 80 percent of all the action bet on this matchup.
USC?s aspirations for the BCS championship game will be tested in their next two conference games as they face both No. 13 Oregon (AP) and No. 6 California (AP).
In that Cal game, the Trojans are listed as a 9-point chalk on the Game of the Year menu.
