Anyone else think CBS, the NFL, and all corporate advertisers would pay millions upon millions to get Favre vs. Manning in the Super Bowl ??? Watch the officiating closely . . . .

Here's an interesting article on the subject:

There?s a lot of uncertainty heading into Sunday?s NFC and AFC championship games.

But one thing is certain. Officials for CBS and TV advertisers during this year?s Super Bowl will be rooting heartily for the Minnesota Vikings. Or at least they should be.

Whether those same TV executives and advertisers are rooting for the Indianapolis Colts is less clear.

There?s a strong contingent of TV experts who think the best Super Bowl match-up?purely from a ratings standpoint?this year would be Minnesota vs. New York Jets.

?With the Jets, you?d have the entire New York market, the largest media market in the world, covered, and no one draws national attention like Brett Favre,? a CBS official told me this morning.

Well, you can?t argue the Favre factor. In a season where the NFL has earned its highest season-long TV ratings since 1990, the purple-clad man from Mississippi has led the way.

The average NFL regular season game, according to New York-based Nielsen Media Research, was watched by 16.6 million people, 2 million more than last year. Favre played in two of the top four most watched games this year. Yes, both were against his old team, Green Bay, but still, you can?t deny his allure.

The Vikings-Packers game Nov. 1 drew 29.8 million viewers, tops this year. That game drew more viewers than any other fall broadcast. The Vikes-Pack game Nov. 30 on ESPN, drew 21.8 million viewers, the most watched cable broadcast ever.

The Favre factor is nothing new. The 1997 and 1998 Super Bowls?the two Favre played in?had TV ratings of 43.3 and 44.5 respectively. Each rating point equals 1.1 million TV households.

For comparison?s sake, last year?s Super Bowl earned a 42.0 rating, and the year before, featuring two huge media markets in New York and New England, notched a 43.1 rating.

So you can see, Favre rocks ratings. And given his many retirements and team changes, he probably would draw even more this year than in previous years.

But what about Peyton Manning? After all, the 2007 Super Bowl featuring the Colts and Bears earned a 42.6 TV rating.

?You can?t discount his star power,? my source at CBS said. He added that the game was bolstered by the size of the Chicago market and the Bears' following nationwide.

?Indianapolis is the 30th largest media market. And for sheer numbers, it just doesn?t hold a candle to New York,? my network source said. "I?m just saying it?s difficult to beat, from a ratings perspective, the drawing power of Favre, and the sheer size of New York.?

Of course, not everyone agrees.

?A match between Peyton Manning and Favre would feature two of the highest-profile quarterbacks ever,? Neal Pilson, former CBS Sports president told the Chicago Sun-Times. ?So, if I were rooting for the highest-rated game, my vote goes to Indianapolis-Minnesota.?

With the average price of a 30-second spot this year sitting at $3 million, there?s plenty at stake for CBS and its advertisers. High ratings sometimes trigger escalator clauses in ad deals. It?s hard to believe that in 1990, a 30-second Super Bowl spot cost $700,000.

Those high ratings certainly help the NFL when negotiating its next TV deal. And high historical ratings also helps the network pushing those pricey ad spots.

you guys are so messed up , you had a handful of games with saved points in last 40 years all were college hoops except 1 ncaafb. that i talked about in gen. and they were all before 1997

now of days between vegas and offshores games are watched so close you could see the hair on a knats nutt. And the networks would never take part in this, hell the feds would pull everything they owned from them, vegas is better then nsa these days when it comes to know what is going on. Trust me on that.

justification for bad calls . they use it was a "judgment call" check out Scott Green and his history. most controversial 2008 game between steelers and chargers. His recent body of work in az/packer playoff game it goes on and on with this guy. His 2002 playoff game between giants/niners yet he is never held accountable and gets to still be part of 2002 superbowl.

A little info on Corrente and his crew is they tend to let offensive linemen get away with holding which I see as a plus for colts and Manning and his offense. I see colts putting up 30 in this game and no way do jets have the offense to keep up. I was all over the jets when they beat colts but come Sunday its over for the jets.

they never stopped to think that Vegas will employ any security measure necessary to make sure legalized sports wagering is never in jeapordy.

Fletcher you can tell them the real deal til the cows come and it will never get through their thick skulls.

The perfect excuse for wagering and picking a loser when the bounce doesn't go their way..

Fix...it's laughable ..and continues to be every time I read the damn excuse.

Some Bozo's make 500 wagers a year and can't phathom the notion of a bad break to beat them.

NOT A PEEP ..when they get 5 sweet bounces in a week and get W's instead of L's + the juice.

That's solid cappin'

and a player would never have influence in an over/under I have first hand knowledge back in the 80's a certain shooting guard for the bucks who played college at Arkansas. I was at a after hour house party where many athletes attended and watched him gambling dice game he lost and gave his lincoln town car to the person. If you are from Milwaukee this individual had personalized license plates on the car he went outside took off the plates and gve the keys to the person who won. People in bucks organization back than could never figure out how this guy could be so good one game and another game forget how to shoot.

Just because he bet , doesnot show that it was fixed, hell i coached and played in college& minors, tons of pros and colleges players and coaches bet far from saying they are trying to fix games.

I don't know about fixed to dangerous but certain outcomes can be used to fulfiil favors and obligations tofriends and aquantinces.

not to mention the #1 market.

Bingo! It's always a huge payday for the networks when an NY team is involved....not that they even need help with their ratings.

I read today tickets are still available for the Colts game tomorrow, how is that possible?

Wow, that would be a shock. We are a small city, but the stadium is sold via season tickets and the waiting list exceeding 50,000!!!
