GAME 1
College Football
Michigan @ Michigan State
Saturday Oct 1st - 12:00 PM EDT - (ABC)Michigan (+5.5)
Michigan State (-5.5)
It's very unfamiliar territory for Michigan's Wolverines. For the first time in 7 years, they are not ranked and subsequently being raked over the coals by fans, media, and everyone else. Meanwhile, the Spartans are being courted with all the adoration and respect of the homecoming queen as they are led up the standings to a 4-0 start with Heisman contending QB Drew Stanton at the helm.
Keep in mind that Michigan is banged up in key areas and not producing the way it should be in other spots, but it still came this close to escaping Madison with a win and almost came back against Notre Dame on a day when nothing was working quite right. On the other side, Michigan State obliterated three lousy teams (Kent State, Hawaii and Illinois) and hung on for dear life against Notre Dame.
Will the two teams continue to criss-cross in different directions as Michigan State becomes the hot team in the Rose Bowl race, or will Michigan reenter the Big Ten title hunt? Will this be the deathblow to Michigan's season, or will Michigan State see its dream go up in smoke? These two always seem to come up with classics in one of College Football?s nastiest, underrated rivalries.
GAME 2
NFL
San Diego @ New England
Sunday Oct 2 - 1:00 PM EDT - (CBS)San Diego (+5)
Eli Manning's first visit to San Diego after rejecting the team after the 2004 draft was the story of the night heading into last Sunday's Chargers - Giants game but the Chargers' LaDainian Tomlinson took center stage instead, running for three touchdowns and throwing for another to lead the Chargers to a 45-23 win over the Giants. "It was an electrifying event out there and it was like a playoff game," Tomlinson said. He finished with 220 total yards after compiling 124 yards through the first two games. The 45 points scored was the most in a game for San Diego (1-2) since 1993. The are a 5 point dog Sunday against the "maybe-not-so-invinceable" Patriots this weekend but perhaps they can run some of last weekend's momentum into this game... What do you think?
New England (-5)
The New England Patriots were one second away from heading into overtime and the potential to drop to 1-2 to start the season last weekend against Pittsburgh however Tom Brady and Adam Vinatieri came through in the nick of time. In a rematch of last season's AFC Championship Game, Brady drove the Patriots 37 yards in just over a minute to set up Vinatieri's game-winning 43-yard field goal with one second left to lift the Patriots over the Steelers 23-20 on Sunday. "Our coaches always get us in situations where we can make plays," said receiver David Givens. "There always seems to be time for us to come back." Brady finished with 372 yards passing as the Patriots improved to 2-1.
GAME 3
NFL
NY Jets @ Baltimore
Sunday Oct 2 - 4:05 PM EDT - (CBS)Jets (+7)
Not only did the Jets lose a heartbreaker at home to the Jags 26-20 in overtime but they might have problems at quarterback all season long. Chad Pennington strained his surgically repaired right shoulder, but he had to finish the game because backup Jay Fielder also hurt his shoulder. Jerald Sowell's 1-yard run and James Reed's 33-yard fumble return for touchdowns gave the Jets a 14-10 lead, and Mike Nugent's two field goals in the fourth quarter erased a 20-14 deficit. But in overtime, Pennington was intercepted and penalties pushed the Jets back to their 1-yard line, and Byron Leftwich's 36-yard pass to Jimmy Smith ended it. Pennington completed 9 of 19 passes for only 76 yards and was picked off twice. Curtis Martin was held to 67 yards on 16 carries. Jacksonville outgained New York 308-168. "Offensively we're all searching for answers right now," Pennington said. "We're just taking turns messing plays up."
Ravens (-7)
The Ravens were expected to challenge for the AFC North title in 2005 but have got off to a slow 0-2 start coming off a bye week this past weekend. Only lowly Houston has put up less points for (at 14 to Baltimore's 17) so far this season and both teams are in action this weekend so get your wagers in now to enjoy all the action! betED has got Baltimore as (-7) favorites over the Jets "We've got a lot of work to do, plain and simple," Coach Brian Billick said. "This bye didn't look to be in a particularly good spot when it first came out. But obviously right now, it's what we need because we have a great deal of work these next two weeks.
GAME 4
NFL
San Francisco VS Arizona
Sunday Oct 2 - 8:30PM EDT - (ESPN)History to be made in Mexico City
For the first time in the 86-year history of the National Football League, a regular-season game will be played outside the United States when the Arizona Cardinals face the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday night in Mexico City's Estadio Azteca.
49ers (+3)
Rebuilding an NFL franchise means going through 42-3 losses like San Francisco did 2 weeks ago, and it also means going through some heartbreak. The 49ers built leads of 21-7, 24-12 and 31-19, but Keyshawn Johnson's touchdown catch with 1:51 remaining handed the 49ers a 34-31 defeat. "It's unacceptable to lose that game," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said. "They ought to feel the same way. ... We're not a 2-14 football team." Brandon Lloyd -- who wound up four catches for 142 yards -- broke a 7-7 tie with an 89-yard catch-and run, and Tony Parrish made it 21-7 with a 34-yard interception return. Lloyd's second touchdown catch made it 31-19 at the end of three quarters. But Tim Ratty, who passed for 269 yards and three touchdowns, was intercepted twice in the fourth quarter -- the second coming with 1:00 remaining near midfield. Parrish picked off Drew Bledsoe twice.
Cardinals (-3)
The Cardinals' struggles continue as they drop to 0-3 following their 37-12 loss to the Seahawks. Arizona kept the game close for the first half, with the Seahawks leading 10-9. But two rushing scores by Seattle RB Shaun Alexander early in the third quarter broke the game open. And to add insult to injury, the Cardinals was dealt another blow when QB Kurt Warner left the game with a strained groin with 3:56 left in the first half. He finished 8 of 13 for 105 yards. His backup, Josh McCown, didn't fare well either, going 10 of 23 for 97 yards. The Cardinals defense gave up a total of 447 yards to the Seahawks (2-1). "It's not working," Arizona coach Dennis Green said. "You have a lot of strategies, you plan strategies and you want them to work. Now we're sitting 0-3 and played very poorly in the second half."
GAME 5 - MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
NFL
Green Bay @ Carolina
Monday Oct 3 - 9:00 PM EDT - (ABC)
Packers (+7.5)
The Packers desperately needed a win to boost their morale, but came up short once again in the 17-16 loss to the Bucs. With the loss, the Packers fall to 0-3 for the first time since QB Brett Favre was a sophomore at Southern Miss in 1988. Favre tossed touchdown passes to receivers Robert Ferguson and Antonio Chatman, but was also picked off three times. He finished 14 of 24 for 195 yards. The Bucs limited the Packers to just 75 yards rushing as they snapped a 13-game road losing streak to Green Bay. "It's hard to find a silver lining in 0-3," Favre said. "But as they say, the show must go on and we have to find a way to win a game."
Panthers (-7.5)
If Carolina can clone Steve Smith and put about three of him on the field at once, then there would be no stopping the team. Smith had 170 of Jake Delhomme's 285 passing yards and all three scores, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers gave up a last-second field goal in a 27-24 loss to the Dolphins. Smith had TD receptions of 1, 3 and 53 yards, but the rest of the offense stalled in the Florida heat as the running game was held to just 61 yards. Carolina was driving near the end of the contest, but Delhomme was picked off and Miami only had to go 11 yards before getting the game-winning kick. "It doesn't get any lower than this," Delhomme said. "There was no doubt we were going to kick the field goal and win the game. You don't want to have to look your other players in the eyes, because you let them down."
