The Lions Chase Perfection

By Mike Harrison

While the Tennessee Titans abandoned their quest for a perfect season a few weeks ago, there is still another team on a perfect run heading into the last weeks of the NFL season?the Detroit Lions haven?t given up yet.

They seem focused, committed and have their eye firmly on the goal of a perfect 0-16 year.

The Lions have hardly been kings of the jungle, resembling more the lion from the Wizard of Oz, sans the courage, going 1-19 SU and 6-14 ATS in the last 20 games.

SPORTSBETTING.COM always has a ton of fun and different proposition wagers offered up and right now they are asking the question:

?Will the Detroit Lions finish the regular season 0-16??

It is called the ?Lions Perfection Prop?.

If you think Yes, indeed they will lose the rest of the way, a $70 wager gets you a profit of $50 (-140). If you feel they can find a way to win a game, a $50 wager cashes a profit of $60 (+120).

Detroit is having one of its usual crappy seasons, but this one is even crappier than most, as they are 0-13 straight up. Against the spread they?ve put together a 5-8 ATS mark, but has been covering more often than not lately going 5-4 ATS in their last nine games, but still, the scoreboard loses are piling up.

Looking at the Lions? schedule, three games remain; a road game in Indy (very tough for them to win there obviously), a home game vs. New Orleans (they might have a shot vs. a potentially disinterested Saint team) and a final game in Wisconsin against the Packers (it?ll be tough to win at Lambeau on the final week of the season)?do you see a win amongst that trio?

The Lions are listed as 17.5-point underdogs for this week?s game vs. the Colts.

As mentioned, if there is an opportunity to grab a win it could come against the Saints.

Things don?t look good for the final game against division rival Green Bay as the Lions haven?t won a game straight up at Lambeau Field since 1991, currently in the middle of a 17-game losing streak.

So what do bettors think about an 0-16 season?
An overwhelming majority of the betting public is predicting the first winless season since the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as 81% of bettors out there think Detroit will run the table and head into the off-season without tasting victory.

Tampa Bay at Atlanta
Speaking of the Bucs, they aren?t winless this season but they didn?t do themselves any favors dropping the Monday Nighter to the Carolina Panthers 38-23 (a SU and ATS loss).

Tampa Bay?s opponent this week is the Atlanta Falcons, who are only a game behind the Bucs in the NFC South; the Falcons are listed as 2.5-point favorites with the Total set at 45.

Dating back to 1988 the Bucs have gone 7-5 SU and ATS in Georgia and the Over has gone 8-4 in that time as well.

The Falcons have gone through quite the turnaround since last year when they were 4-12 and the betting public likes them this week against the Bucs as 76% are betting on Atlanta.

Pittsburgh at Baltimore
The balance of power in the AFC North could shift this week should the hometown Baltimore Ravens defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers; the Ravens are a 2.5-point home favorite.

The Baltimore franchise is a game behind Pittsburgh for the division lead and has done well against its AFC North rival at home recently, going 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS the last five times they have hosted the Steelers.

Still, a slight majority of the betting public likes Pittsburgh, who are seeing 57% of the action.

NY Giants at Dallas
Dallas? WR Terrell Owens is at it again, this time throwing QB Tony Romo and TE Jason Witten under the bus and with the Cowboys in the playoff hunt, it couldn?t be more untimely.

Add to the fact that the Cowboys have a home game against the division rival and NFC East leader New York Giants and you can see why Dallas could be screwed; SPORTSBETTING.COM has the Cowboys listed at -2.5.

While currently sitting at 11-2, the Giants don?t have such a good record against the Cowboys going 8-12 SU and 8-11-1 ATS.

Despite the controversy, the Cowboys are still seeing a 57% majority of the action.

It?s do or die time for many teams with only three weeks left in the season, making for some potentially great football. Enjoy your weekend.
