"the bunker"
WASHINGTON, June 24 — ""The top American commander in Iraq has drafted a plan that projects sharp reductions in the United States military presence there by the end of 2007, with the first cuts coming this September, American officials say.

According to a """classified briefing""" at the Pentagon this week by the commander, Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the number of American combat brigades in Iraq is projected to decrease to 5 or 6 from the current level of 14 by December 2007.

Under the plan, the first reductions would involve two combat brigades that would rotate out of Iraq in September without being replaced. Combat brigades, which generally have about 3,500 troops, do not make up the bulk of the 127,000-member American force in Iraq.

American officials emphasized that any withdrawals would depend on continued progress, including the development of competent Iraqi security forces, a reduction in Sunni Arab hostility toward the new Iraqi government and the assumption that the insurgency will not expand beyond Iraq’s six central provinces. Even so, the projected troop withdrawals in 2007 are more significant than many experts had expected.

Estimating the number of American troops that may be deployed in Iraq at the end of 2007 is difficult, one officer said. A reduction of eight combat brigades would equal about 28,000 troops. But that does not mean that the reduction in the remainder of the force would be proportional: troops would still be needed to help with logistics, intelligence, training and airstrikes.

"""General Casey’s briefing has remained a closely held secret, and it was described by American officials who agreed to discuss the details only on condition of anonymity."""

i guess the obvious question is,"good grief, how can someone be in a position of responsibility and not understand what the word classified means?"

this is ridiculous...there HAS to be investigation and prosecution ...to the fullest extent of the law....

even to the most jaundiced bush hater, the n.y.t`s is acting as a foreign intelligence agency...
they develop moles, find out our secrets and give them to the enemy....

but, imo, the leakers are more at fault than the times...that`s the first order of business...

one word comes to mind for me...."polygraphs"....

"I hate newspapermen.
They come into camp and
pick up their camp rumors
and print them as facts.
I regard them as spies,
which, in truth, they are.
If I killed them all there
would be news from Hell before breakfast."

- General William Tecumseh Sherman

amen,general sherman....amen...

Just the administration using the press in reaction to the polls. Every admin does it. Weasel, you really need to get a grip.

the rovian mastermind again,eh?........very original....it`s always the administration...

this time, disseminating their own intel....after pleading with the n.y.t.`s to not release the info.... ..

yeah,right...

the time table for proposed pullout doesn`t chafe my ass like the bank transfer tracking...it`s all CLASSIFIED.....BUT WHO CARES...THE MEDIA DECIDES WHAT`S CLASSIFIED...NOT THE ELECTED GOV`T....

these are the same people who spend all their time telling people how we need to stop emphasizing "hard" tactics like open warfare or covert ops and instead "work with our allies" to use traditional law enforcement means to combat terrorism...

well, what the hell do they think "this" program is?....we can track the cash of mobsters, but al qaeda's blood money is off-limits?.....

what exactly does the new york times want us to do with the belgians? .....eat chocolate?....

I know it's hard for someone on the far right to connect the dots since pre 9/11 but, you have to admit there are parallels here.

Weasel, think about a minute. The story makes the administration look good. Bush has taken the Republican poll numbers down with him. The feeling is that they have no plan. So, this is how they get these stories out to the public so it looks like they are doing something.

Kind of like a Hollywood celebrity having a baby and saying no pictures of the baby. All of a sudden they fight to see who is going to show us baby pictures first.

This is the same thing. If they truly didn't want it out they wouldn't be telling everyone.

The one thing I can't figure, why would Scooter, you have to love these killer cons with names like Scooter, why would Scotter, a right wing neocon, be talking ,or leaking to a rag like the NYT'S ?

IT's starting to come back to me. Maybe I'm wrong but, did the Bush AD owe the NY Times ? Think about it, that left wing rag you cry your self to sleep about, was owed by Bush and the boys. See if you can follow this, Judith Miller, remember Judy. Judith Miller the WMD'S queen. The pulitzer prize winner who with that great man of character, Ahmad Chalbi, helped bolster the case for war. If not for Judy, Chalabi & the Times, all pre war friends of Bush, we would not be in Iraq today. It's funny how we forget who are friends were.

who is loven?....and btw, judith miller went to jail(with the blessing of the times...who fired her)....

you think sulzberger and his clown posse will see the inside of a cell?...

bryanz...you trying to draw some sort of covert link between the times and bush?..or are you just trying to smear by implication?...again..

you`re insane...

given sulzberger's address to state univ. n.y. the other day in which he clearly laid out his agenda, it's no surprise that he uses the n.y.t`s as a tool to accomplish that agenda....

the question in my mind is why the board of directors goes along with this use of the times as a political tool rather than seeing it as it should be-- a money making business.....cause the times is hurting...

a link to the speech...doesn`t sound like one of bush`s bunky`s to me...

time to come down off the ether binge,bryanz...

Loven just wrote the story that I posted the link to, Like it or not , Judy miller and Chalbi were close to the President. Miller wrote what she did in support of the Bush AD, those are the facts. I like the way you use the term Operative, I don't have to link Bush and Miller and that crook Chalbi, and the Times. It's been done.

Your boy Bush had him sitting right behind his wife Laura as the guest of honor at the State of the Union. This is the guy that faked intelligence to justify the war, that didn't happen either right ? The guest of honor was Ahmad Chalabi.

we knew the troops would have to be out by 2008 because thats the year of the new presidential election. Rep have to give their candiadate half a chance.

Its really sickening they would think this way though.

Not that we shouldnt get out of there. I said years ago to pull back out of the citys and let what happens happen.

Its a crazy world

Bush lined Ahmad Chalabi's pockets with 20 + million of tax payer money and 5 months after the State of the Union are troops have to hold a gun to his head and arrest his 2 aides and seize documents. Ahmad had a big conflict of interest, if and only if we went to war with Iraq, could he be a big part of the Gov and the new Nation that Bush said he was not in the business of building. We sent men into war in part based on the intelligence of this honorable friend of our President.

There is nothing covert about it. It was plain as day in black in white. Miller worked for the Times and she wrote story after story about the WMD's that helped the Bush AD sell us & move us into a war. There is nothing that can be disputed in this sentence. Are you trying to tell me that you believe, Miller had no contact with the Bush AD.
