Could not agree more. Two years ago it was completely flipped in the East when the Caps and Penguins had to play in the second round.

The NHL needs to go back to the old playoff format, with one seeding and reseeding every round. They also need to change the points system. You should not get the same points for winning in regulation versus OT versus a shootout. The NHL likes it because it keeps everything close, but it unfairly rewards team for winning in OT and in shootouts.

Actually they could keep everything the same, just do what a 5 year old child could figure out and have a bracket exactly the same as the NBA. 1/8, 2/7, 3/6, 4/5 in the Round of 16's and be done with it. The current playoff format is complete bullshit.

Somewhat big in some European countries and absolutely massive in Canada, the tv ratings for Toronto Maple Leaf games are astronomical. Hell the entire city (and outside the city for about a 100km radius) shuts down when the Leafs play. And also true to a lesser extent for the other Canadian teams. So yes, a ton of people are watching.

And NHL is bigger in USA then most people think. The city of Boston (fuck them) will be rocking during the playoffs, so again lots of people watching.

Note: NHL playoffs very big in Sweden as well, same holds true for Finland, the global market for NHL is quite vast.

And I say again, you won't see a city go more nuts for playoff game then when Toronto plays, the tv audience alone for a Leaf playoff game gives the NHL a massive audience. So again, lots are watching. Walk the streets of Toronto now, it is all Leafs all the time, and when the Leafs play the city goes into lockdown.

It does get crazy, doesn?t it. Can go anywhere near, especially after a playoff game win. I think we got better from last year in this position, and match up better this time with Bos. That said, format does suck, and we get the short end of it. Go leafs go.

so it is really a Canadian sport with some USA team hanging around trying to take a Cup .

See in order to be a USA Sport the talking heads of National sports talk shows have to talk about your sport
when it is in season. That is just not the case.

So no it's not bigger than we think. It's the same game that those who run the NHL haven't translated to the USA TV Audience.

And I ask you LOVERS OF THE GAME TO FAST FOR TV ..how come .......they haven't figured it out.

It is certainly a great game.

Gotta Love Playoff Hockey in Southern Ontario :0074

I am hoping the Leafs can string it together finally, and pull the series win out...the city will go bonkers.

I like the fact that juts about everyone is writing the Leafs off.

Toronto gets double fucked, they don't even get home ice.

Agree with all you said except this. As you stated, Leafs are 5th overall in the conference. So even seeded like the NBA, they would play the 4 seed (Islanders) and would not have home ice there either. As it is, they get the 107 point team instead of the 103 point one. Definitely a disadvantage, but not an earth-shattering difference. Although, given recent history, I can certainly understand Leafs fans not being happy about seeing Boston again.

Certainly agree that (potentially) making the winner face the Lightning in round 2 is unfair to both sides. But every time seeding comes up in any sport, I generally have the same reaction - if you're the better team, go out and prove it and it won't matter. If you're not, then I have limited sympathy for the system not helping you as much it "should".

Totally disagree.

The "Well if you are the best then you have to beat all the teams anyway" comment is bullshit. If there are say 32 teams or 64 teams or whatever and you are number 1 and you play number 3 first round then number 4 in 2nd round and number 5 in third round. And on the the other side of the bracket number 2 plays number 64 in first round then number 62 in 2nd round then number 51 in third round, etc. etc. You have one team that "shed blood and fought to the death" to get to the final and are completely spent, and they get rolled in the semi finals or finals. Or in other words the team finishing second does not get rewarded for finishing second.

The above holds true for Tampa, Boston and Toronto should NOT be playing one another, they will battle it out and the winning team will lose to Tampa because Tampa has a nice easy first round match-up (which they deserve). Boston or Toronto (the series is going to be vicious/brutal) will be totally spent and Tampa will be fresh. Tampa gets rewarded for finishing 1st and Toronto (and Boston to a lesser extent) get totally fucked over.

So the "Well if you are the best then you have to beat all the teams anyway" comment is bullshit.

It is so friggen easy to come up with a playoff format, no debate, nothing. If you have a bracket with 16 teams in East and West, you just have 1/8, 2/7, 3/6 and 4/5 in each Conference, a Nursery School student could figure that out:facepalm:
