This past weekend's action from a bookmaker's point-of-view
By Jimmy Mason, Director of Sportsbook Operations, www.betcom.com

This past weekend was the first weekend this year that really felt like baseball season to me. The big favorites (-150 and up) went 14-1 and the only basketball game was an utterly predictable massacre. We had been lucky this year up until this point as the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes were both great for the house, the NBA playoffs had been surprisingly kind to the ?BM?s and we had seen keen interest in reality shows such as American Idol which helped boost our volume.

Saturday however saw the big favorites in baseball go 7-0 and we lost the biggest game of the weekend as the Pistons routed the Heat. With Dwayne Wade out with a rib injury and the Pistons facing elimination on their own court the line opened at -6, before quickly moving to 6 (-115), 6 ?, 7 and even some -7 (-115) before game time . That?s a big move for this point in the playoff. Sunday we were looking for a comeback, but what we got was more of the same as the big favorites in baseball went an amazing 7-1. As a recreational sports book our players tend to bet favorites. That trend is magnified during baseball season, and why not? I have seen $100 players amass six figure bank rolls during baseball more than once! If you are not betting baseball you should be! Lowered juice and no point spread mean easy money for the players.

Meanwhile in the ?Winners Circle?, Kenny D., From Long Island, N.Y. won $450 when he hit #32 and #34 back to back on his first two spins playing roulette in our brand new casino! Kenny bet $5 on #32 and it paid 35/1 for $175! He doubles up his bet on the next roll and hit #34, again paying 35/1, this time for $350! Kenny made one more spin, then took the money and ran! When asked about his experience Kenny said ?I went into the new casino to check it out after I made my halftime bets. I was just goofing around playing roulette. Like most people I have certain numbers I always play. For me it?s #32, #33 and #34. I bet all three for $5 a piece, when I won that I bet $10 a piece, I won again and bet $15 a piece. I lost that one and the NBA game was starting so I cashed out. I will definitely be back though!? Nice work Kenny and welcome to the ?Winners Circle?.

Until next week when we?ll ?wrap? it up again?..

Jimmy Mason
