SOMETIMES YOU?RE THE BUG, SOMETIMES YOU?RE THE WINDSHIELD?.
This weekend we the books were the windshield. Yes, the exceptional roll the books have been on this summer continued this past weekend as an interleague handicapping trend we discussed two weeks ago came through in flying colors, Pedro Martinez and the Mets dropped the biggest baseball game of the weekend and the San Antonio Spurs pulled one out of their hat to changing the complexion of the NBA finals and completing the trifecta for the books.
First, as discussed in this column two weeks ago our players mainly play over on totals. As one player once told me ?I don?t like to spend three hours rooting for nothing to happen.? There are a number of reasons and theories as to why the under tickets cash series after series in interleague play. The under is a strong play as hitters normally have not seen the pitchers before and most bettors do not understand the importance of this. Next, managers like to rest their star players on Sundays, and lastly, while not applicable in these series? which were played in A.L. Parks, the pitchers must hit. This weekend the under went 10-3-2 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday. Overall the under went 20-8-2 for the weekend?.Not good for the players who like to bet over.
Next was Pedro Martinez and the Mets losing 4-1 to the Mariners. Pedro is great and the Mariners stink, but there is a reason that they play the games instead of directly depositing the money into the bettor?s accounts?.Sometimes the dogs win. Pedro?s backing was so strong that the line moved a full 25 cents from -175 to -200, all on money from the general public.
Lastly came game 5 of the NBA Finals where nearly everyone had the Pistons penciled in with a 3-2 lead going back to San Antonio. The Pistons opened as -3 point favorites and closed at -3 ? (-115) after peaking at -4. The Spurs took the game into overtime and got the win 96-95 changing completely the tone of the series.
