This past weekend's action from a bookmaker's point-of-view
By Jimmy Mason, Director of Sportsbook Operations, www.betcom.com
These are the dog days of summer in the sportsbook, when the men in the suits are working feverishly behind the scenes to be ahead of the game for the upcoming football season. Down in the trenches however the sportsbook felt decidedly slow this weekend. Many of our players were away for the 4th of July and that had a lot to do with it, but the NBA Finals are over and things just naturally slow down until football season. The bottom line is we broke even for the weekend, which is actually a loss on our side of the keyboard. Since the details of the sportsbook?s weekend were decidedly boring, I decided to write my own personal weekend wrap!
My wife and I went to the new casino here in San Jose. It?s a strange concept. A brand new casino, disco and??Denny?s restaurant!? They?re all inconveniently located across from the international airport to boot!!! Not exactly Vegas, but hey a guy has to get out of the house! From the time I sat down at the blackjack table I was on fire! My wife was playing roulette, but kept coming over to my table to ?watch? when she was broke. Each time she came around to ?watch? I started losing. My superstitious nature kicked in and I quickly decided it would be cheaper to give her more money to play roulette than let her be my personal ?cooler? (Hey, it made sense at the time.). Finally on the way to cash out I asked her how she had done for the night, she said ?Great, I won $70!? I mentioned that I had given her $300 so she hadn?t really won at all. She insisted she had won $70. I told her she just ?didn?t get it?, and asked her how in the world she could have won $70 if I gave her $300? She said ?Jimmy, when we came here tonight I had zero. I am leaving with $70?.And you think I?m the one who doesn?t get it?? LOL, God bless her, it?s hard to argue with that logic!
Until next week, may all your wagers be winners?
