This past weekend's action from a bookmaker's point-of-view
By Jimmy Mason, Director of Sportsbook Operations, Betcom (www.betcom.com)

This ?weekender? saw an interesting turn of events as Saturday saw the bulk of the chalk and some prime dogs cashed big for the players while Sunday saw two major NBA underdogs turn the tables our way.

Saturday nearly everything went the way of the players. Things got off to a rocky start for us as the early games saw heavy action on all three winners. Bartolo Colon and the Angels beat the Tigers 4-2, Mark Mulder and the Cardinals won 7-6 as underdogs against Pedro and the Mets and Kevin Millwood and the ?Tribe? beat the Blue Jays 3-2. The night games saw more of the same as Roger Clemens and the Astros shut down the Bonds-less Giants, Brandon Webb and D?Backs hammered the Rockies 10-4, red hot Mike Hampton and Braves beat the Dodgers 5-1, and the ?Yanks? beat the A?s 15-6. All good for the players, and bad for business.

Our numbers were looking bleak Sunday until the first of the NBA night games. The Spurs opened at -6, and our linesmakers quickly took them up to -6 ? and -7, before the line peaked at -7 ? near tip-off. We had an outrageous ticket count of nearly 10 to 1 on the Spurs, and a handle that looked more like an NFL game than an NBA game. The Sonics ultimately pounded the Spurs 101-89, beating not only the spread, but the thousands of teasers we had as well. After scoring the Sonics game we were in good shape and ready for the late action. And action is what we got as the Suns have become everyone?s favorite team to bet thanks to their high scoring ways and superstar appeal. Amare Stoudamire was held in check however on this night with 15 points, while MVP Steve Nash scored a career high 48 points in a losing effort. Final score Mavericks win 119-109. After rallying from a big hole, the house ?wrapped? up the weekend with a decent profit thanks to NBA playoffs.

Until next week, when we?ll ?wrap? it all up again??

Jimmy Mason
