A look back at this past weekend from a bettor?s point-of-view

This was a great week to be betting the NFL if you like favorites and teasers. The ?chalk? went 11-3-1 on the week and teasers on favorites went 14-2!!!

There is a growing belief among the bookmakers (a naturally superstitious lot) that the house can?t win the big ?marquee match-ups,? i.e. Monday Night, Sunday Night, Thanksgiving etc. This week certainly started on that note, as we got off to a bad start with the Patriots rolling over the defenseless Chiefs 27-19 last Monday Night. The line was as low as -3 and we were even using -3 ? at game time! It was a classic ?jailbreak? game for us. Thanksgiving Thursday was more of the same as both favorites covered and more importantly the sexy Colts destroyed the Lions 41-9. Even a prohibitive line of -10 could not deter the believers that this one was free money and they were right!

After a solid NCAA Saturday, things got off to a shaky start in Sundays early session as the Eagles, Vikings, Bengals and Chargers all covered for the players increasing further their already thick bankrolls. These days with the popularity of the teaser, they can actually make or break a sportsbooks day. Many who think they are in the know claim that teasers are ?sucker bets?. Well, if you teased the early games the favorites were 6-1. Not too shabby for ?sucker bets?.

The afternoon session was not much kinder to the house, as the fan favorite Patriots and Jets both easily covered and we saw a big game in the Atlanta Falcons fall right on the number. Forget getting ?middled? or ?sided?, as the real danger of a game ?landing on the number? these days is the teaser action. Both sides cover leaving the book to pay and not collect! If you teased the afternoon games you went 4-1 with the only surprise being the Seahawks.

Here is the beautiful part of being a bookmaker: There is always another game to book. The late night ?marquee match-up? was a tremendous turnaround for the house. We recouped all early losses in the NFL and ended up turning a decent profit as everyone seemed to be doubling and tripling up on both the Broncos and the under. So in the end, we grumpy bookmakers had to give a little bit of love to the ?marquee match-ups? for bailing us out this week.

Well, that?s it for this past weekend. Till next week?.
