A look back at this past weekend from a bettor?s point-of-view
By Jimmy Mason, Director of Sportsbook Operations, www.mybookie.com

Dec 13

After two of the darkest weeks ever for the sportsbooks and a disappointing season in general, this past Sunday was a much-needed rally for the books. Mercifully for the house the ?Big Four? of the Patriots, Eagles, Colts and Steelers looked human (Going just 1-4 against the spread), even in victory.

The Patriots continued to plug away in their workmen like fashion winning their 12th game, defeating the Bengals 35-28. Although we can?t complain about this game too much, two of the biggest Las Vegas handicappers did ?release? the Cincinnati side to their customers. We still had a ticket count of nearly 2 to 1 on the Patriots and the house did nicely as the Patsies failed to cover the 10?-point spread.

Another game that went the house?s way was the Indianapolis/Houston game. This game was a whopper for the house, as everyone and their brother was piling on the Colts, wanting to see Peyton Manning make history. Well, Manning continued on his pace to break Dan Marino?s record, but the lure of Peyton Manning made many otherwise intelligent people forget that 10? points is an awful lot to lay, especially on the road!!! In the end, the Colts take this one but fail to cover the spread winning 23-14.

The only one of the Big Four that did cover the spread yesterday was the Steelers, and again the house got snuck out of this one without a scratch as we had very even two way action on both the Steelers and the Jets. Not since the Steelers/Eagles game had we had such balanced action on the ?Burgh?. It?s really a dream situation for the house when the game can go either way, and we still stand to cash in. This was one of the games where we find ourselves rooting for one team or the other will win big and kill the teasers which the Steelers did, pulling away in the second half to win 17-6. Speaking of teasers, they continued to be outstanding for the players Sunday, as favorites were going 11-4!

A game many of you will want to forget, the late night ?Marquee Match-up? saw the red hot Eagles strut into D.C. as a 9-point favorite, tackling the dismal Redskins. Most weeks this is the biggest game of the day for a sportsbook, in that when everyone is having a winning day, they tend to double or triple up their bets. And when the players are losing, it?s the ?Bail out? game where they go ?All in?. Last night was no different, and after being spoiled by the Eagles all season -- why not? Once again laying the big chalk on the road cost the players dearly, as the ?Skinz? hung tough and nearly won the game outright 17-14 capping off an excellent rebound week for the sportsbooks.

Well, that?s it for this past weekend. Till next week?.

I spent a large part of my morning trying to think of someone to feel sorry for and finally found someone.
