March 14

This past weekend the major conference tournaments came to an end and it was a nice feeling as the number of games was less, but the volume per game was way up giving the games and added sense of excitement and importance. The four conference championship games were very indicative of the weekend as a whole as the books did well, but mostly ?chopped it up?.

First up was the ACC Championship game featuring Georgia Tech and Duke. The ?Duke boys? opened as -3 ? point favorites and closed at -4, and even -4 ? in places. Ultimately the ?Dukies? beat a game Tech squad 69-64 causing quite a bit of nail biting on both sides of the counter as they ultimately covered by one point. We the book had more than a 4-1 ticket count on Duke so this one game to say the least was not good for us.

Next up was the SEC championship game pitting Florida against Kentucky. The Wildcats had been beaten by the Gators last weekend and our players did not believe that lightening would strike twice. In fact Kentucky who opened as -2 ? favorites and went all the way up to -3 ? before dropping back down to -3, in the end it didn?t matter as Florida thumped Kentucky outright again, this time 53-70.

The Big-12 tournament was taken by the favorite Oklahoma St. beating Bobby Knight?s ?Red Raider? squad 72-68. The Cowboys opened at -6 and closed at -7 in most places. We were actually using -7 ? for quite a while as we were getting bombed with Ok. St. Money. In the end the Cowboys won but failed to cover making it a great game for the books.

The last major conference championship was the Big-10 where #1 Illinois took on Wisconsin. The ?fighting illini? were played up from -7 all the way to ? 8 and even 8 ? for a while. They won and covered for the customers 54-43 after being bet at a 7-1 clip, which ensured it would be the biggest game of the weekend. It was and we lost it, but when it was all said and done the losses were overcome by the wins for a small, but exciting profit for the house.
Until next Monday when we break it all down again?
