They All Fall Down

The NFL season has finally kicked off and life is good?unless of course you happen to be a fan of New England Patriots or Tennessee Titans, amongst others.

Both of these teams will see back-up QBs starting for them in Week 2, and there are other knicks to be aware of as well.

How will the wounded list affect Week 2 betting?

Obviously, the biggest blow was dealt to the New England Patriots, forget the clich? that ?one player a team does not make? because QB Tom Brady definitely made the Pats.

In the last 11 straight games, including playoffs, New England has seen itself favored by double-digits 11 times, including last week?s Kansas City game where the Pats were favored by 16-points.

Of course, with Brady gone for the season and backup pivot Matt Cassel expected to start (Cassel hasn?t started since high school) the Patriots are now listed as underdogs at +1 on the road against the New York Jets. Brady?s absence has swung that line by well over a TD.

Coach Bill Belichick must see something in Cassel though as he didn?t sign Chris Simms, Tim Rattay or former Randy Moss fave Daunte Culpepper, opting to stay with Cassel, at least for the time being.

However, even with Brady the Pats have struggled to cover the numbers. Despite being 19-1 straight up in their last 20 starts (the lone blemish was last year?s Super Bowl), the ATS mark isn?t pretty.

The Patriots have dropped their last seven consecutive games (playoffs and regular season) against the spread.

When New England is an underdog, it is a profitable 12-8 SU and 12-7-1 ATS; when it is ?dogged by two-points or less, however, they have only gone 9-11 SU and 10-10 ATS in the last 20.

With Brady out of the picture, and Favre on the other side, the betting public is supporting the home side at a 57% clip. One player a team does not make? Yeah right.

Boy did the Pittsburgh Steelers look good in Week 1.

The team not only covered as 7-point favorites against the Houston Texans, they won 38-17 with QB Ben Roethlisberger going 13/14 for 137 yards and 2 TDs.

However, Big Ben was thrown to the ground in the second quarter by Houston DE Mario Williams, a play that injured Roethlisberger?s shoulder.

Roethlisberger saw limited reps in practice this week but his expected to play in the Steelers? Sunday nighter against the Cleveland Browns; SPORTSBETTING.COM has Pittsburgh listed as a 6-point road fave.

The Steelers have had an easy time of it against their AFC North cousin Browns going 8-1 SU and 5-1-3 against the number in the last nine games in Cleveland.

Bettors are banking on Roethlisberger being ready for action as 61% of the action is going Pittsburgh?s way.

What?s going on in Tennessee? It?s been a soap opera down there the week after the Titans defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 17-10, covering as a 3-point underdog despite the Vince Young disappearing act and all.

Young was having a mediocre game, going 12/22 for 110 yards 1 TD and 2 picks, before spraining his left knee. But the scene before and after the knee sprain has been surreal, as I?m sure most have followed.

Young will be lost for upwards of a month and Kerry Collins will start in Cincinnati against the Bengals. The Titans are listed as a 1-point road dog.

Tennessee has gone 5-1 SU and 3-2-1 ATS in its last six in Cincy. 63% of the wagers at SPORTSBETTING.COM are going Cincinnati?s way.

Let?s hope the swarm of injuries stays away from teams this week.

Enjoy Week 2 action.
