Things I wish I could have bet on last weekend
by Blake Butterfield
1- I wish I could have bet that the Bills, Bengals and Redskins all would have lost to teams that were a combined 0-14 coming into the weekend. Oh, wait. I could have. It is called a parlay. I guess what I am wishing here is that I would have made that parlay. A $100 bet would have paid me almost three grand!
2- I wish I could have bet that there would be two teams going into Week 7 with winning records that have had more points scored against than for and one team with a losing record that has scored more points for than against. Seattle and Carolina both have had 111 points scored against them. Seattle has scores 108 points to Carolina?s 109, yet both have winning records and Seattle leads their division. The Steelers, thanks to their convincing win over the Chiefs on Sunday, have scored 106 points and have only allowed 84 points to be scored on them, yet have a losing record of 2-3. I?d bet on the Steelers having a winning record very soon. No team last year finished the season on either side of this statistical oddity.
*Note: Since the NFL switched to the current divisional format in 2002, only one team has ended a season with a winning record while being outscored. The 2004 Jacksonville Jaguars had a 9-7 record with opponents outscoring them, 280-261. In that time span, there have been five teams end up with losing records while outscoring opponents: 2004, Chiefs and Panthers; 2003, Buccaneers and 49ers; 2002, Jaguars.
3- I wish I could have bet that Edgerrin James, the newest multimillionaire on the Arizona Cardinals, after six games, would be averaging less yards per carry than either of the two backs he was hired to replace. On Monday night, he ran 36 times for 55 yards, statistically the worst rushing day in NFL history.
4- I wish I could have bet that Rex Grossman would have ended the Monday night game with a quarterback rating (10.7) that was 10% of his rating through the first 5 games (100.8). By the way, that game dropped Rex from the upper echelon of QBs this year to the 18th ranked passer, with an overall 82.1 rating. Ouch.
5- I wish I could have bet that Matt Leinhart?s QB rating would be 77.9 higher than Rex Grossman?s.
6- I wish I could have bet that the Chargers and the Bears would be the two highest-scoring offenses this far into the season. Both had major questions at quarterback that seem mostly answered in dramatic fashion and their defenses have been mostly sublime, giving their young starters great field position to work with.
7- I wish I could have bet on China to sweep the gold medals at the World Gymnastics Championship in Denmark, but who makes odds for that sort of thing. Who?s ever even heard of them before? Will anyone remember this five minutes from now? What was I saying?
7a- Oh yeah?I wish I would have bet against my own pick of the Bears to cover the damn spread against Arizona!
Those are a few things I would have liked to bet on. We can?t bet on these sorts of events, but there are tons of props, futures and exotic bets you can make in the BetUS.com Sportsbook. From college to UFC, we have it all! Sign up for free and check us out today!
